Every single part of this vessel, from the buttress of her bow to the screw at her stern, is outstanding. Great name for a ship with this heritage too! So glad they were able to save her from the breakers!

Wow. I thought these were quiet locomotives, wrong. That's a stiff climb. I live in Newcastle NSW Australia and we have grade's just as steep as this climb. The steepest grade and probably longest in Australia is the 33 miles of 1 in 33 over the Blue Mountains, actually isn't alis Gile on the S and C the highest point by rail in England, well in the Blue Mountains there's a town called Valley Heights is the same height as Alis Gile and in the days of steam that's where they would put a bank engine on to Katoomba then down hill to Lithgow. Just watch the DVDs of when 4472 Flying Scotsman visited Australia in 88/89. P.S. SORRY FOR BUTCHERING YOUR SUMMIT'S NAME, I can't remember how to spell it.

I like to see a good steamer pass through a station; shame about those awful glaring lights at the start though, and the fact that that man was in the shot. I find it sad that people cant be bothered to move filming equipment a few feet for a better shot.

In 1976 the Southern Railway (USA) leased the SP 4449 for a series of trips, she was allowed to run the Southerns passenger train schedule, max was 79.... It was either Bill Bistline or Graham Claytor that said that was the first time they had ran at speed with a heavy train without something going wrong.

They're really bouncing up and down on entry to some stations 0:37 1:29 look terrible! Do trains send accelerometer data to a national database to find 'potholes'?

The noise level is a lot more comfortable in a steam based engine room. However all the un shielded machinery represents a risky environment for the engineers.

Lazy creators are the problem with KZbinrs these days. It's blatantly obvious you haven't bothered to move more than a few yards to film this. In my youth I regularly walked from Thirsk to Nothallerton and back on the East Coast Mainline in the mid sixties photographing all the steam engines from all sorts of different angles. In future you should try moving around if you expect to live to my age.
@WillStratfordАй бұрын
Thirsk to Northallerton? Seems like an overly excessive walk. However, I'm sure we'd all love to see your work from your 13 mile round trip! Must be something special to be worth the effort

Shame the names of the crew were not recorded, never forget there are two, without a good fireman the drivers not going to achieve anything.
@davemitchell9941Ай бұрын
I believe the driver was Pete Robert’s ex fireman 70A, Nine Elms. An unconverted MN would have been a joy to see hauling that load. The good ol WC’s could pull out the stops & do the extraordinary when reqd tho. Prob putting out around 1800 - 2000hp to get that lot over the top. Not up to speed with current rule book, but ; Was scratching my head a bit as to why the 73 couldn’t shove. Just leave her unhooked as was in steam days . Once over the top drift up to next signal which would be red anyways & stop. Tis all track circuited! Nice video record tho of the climb. Thank you.

So pleased you posted this. I was fireman on Swanage that day with my driver John Rooney who you can see hanging out Swanage's cab window. We weren't hanging about that day. This could be the trip we left 5 minutes late and got to Medstead 2 minutes early. We must have swapped locos around during the day as for some runs we were leading engine. Great to see and hear again👍🤓

Here lies the problem with KZbin these days. The film quality looks like my first Kodak I bought back in 1962 - the frame is squashed. How does this channel have so many subscribers with such shoddy camerawork? Very disappointed.

Have you seen any other videos on this channel? The camera work is definitely not shoddy. Or are you that disrespectful that you judge a channel on one video?
