Sounds great. Maybe it's nostalgia because I've been a Rush fan since the early 1980s but I always liked the sound of his Slingerland and Tama kits better than the DW kits he used in later years
@kenkmaryofficialКүн бұрын
I think they all sounded great, but I do like the slightly deader toms that were on Moving Pictures better than the newer kits? As you, this it might just be nostalgia for me as well.

No hi-hat barks? From the get go, that stuck out to me. I'm not a hater, and you are a good drummer. I feel those are integral to the song, tho.
@kenkmaryofficialКүн бұрын
Well, you might want to go review the song. I have a track of my take on one side, and Neil's on the other. There are no missing hi-hat "barks," so I'm not sure what you're referring to? I think you're talking about the open to closed hi hat "splashes," and those are all in there where they are in the original. Again, go review and let me know what you find. In Part 4 I'm going to be playing some of my take and Neil's side by side to compare and evaluate, as well as talk about gear, what I learned from the experience, etc.

Phenomenal work...thank you for this series...one recorded take, but was this the only attempt without stopping?
@kenkmaryofficialКүн бұрын
TY so much, Mark. No, I would have to look at the pro-tools session to be sure, but on this one I think I did maybe 4 passes until I was happy with it. And of course I did practice the song prior as well. I did use the last pass, that much I do know. And I'm about 90% happy. It's very difficult to capture all of another drummer's every nuance, as well as "essence" so to speak. And with Neil much more so. I will talk about that in Part 4, evaluating what I did, what I learned, the gear I used, etc. TY again for the kind words!

I admire your ambition with taking on Tom Sawyer. Neil enjoyed the piece partly because of its difficulty. "The Fills" are key to the joy I get from the drumming part - always different and increasingly intricate between the lyric lines of each verse. I noticed it was a challenge for you. (Drumming has so many subtle nuances.) But bravery should be rewarded, and Ken, you did a nice job with it. (Neil had the benefit of the composition and a lifetime satisfying fans at concerts with it.) I look forward to the next selection in your experiment.
@kenkmaryofficialКүн бұрын
@@ROYVDL12 TY Roy! It is an amazing work of art. Even more so when you consider the time period, almost 45 years ago. Next up is talking about this process, gear used, and what I learned from it, which was substantial.

I do know that one and I can for sure... I'm not sure I'd want to try to lock to their old tracks in the same way I did this. It's a bit too much work, but I could do a version not abiding by these rules. (The "session rules" is what made this kind of a bear...)
@kennethgarcia6892Күн бұрын
@kenkmaryofficial I understand. The versions you played must have been extremely difficult to get in one pass. Well done
@kenkmaryofficialКүн бұрын
@@kennethgarcia6892 Yes, it was a bit of pressure with cameras rolling and knowing if you make a mistake anywhere it ruins the take. On top of that, I'm having to lock to the existing music, which was done without a click track so it moved, so yes, just a little bit of stress. I just wanted to see if I could do it, lol. In recording the drums always go down first, and everything locks to them, so it's the reverse. Not too bad to do that, and I have done that, when the other tracks are done to a click. But this was a fun experience and I love these songs, so it made it worthwhile.

I love Ken's intro with the beard and when he plays he has to shave! LOL Those 16ths on the h-h can only be done with good technique. The well placed barks on the h-h are perfect too. I had to buy the "Drum Techniques of RUSH" manuscript by Bill Wheeler to wrap my head around what Neil was doing on some of his songs because his fills were so precise and methodical. It has been a pleasure watching you nail these. Nice job my friend!

Been waiting for this, all time fave Rush song. Started out with a 9.5/10 for the main performance, went to a 9.7 for the live ending, the only reason it wasn't a perfect 10/10 was because it lacked one thing...Neil, and that's not your fault. Thanks for bringing this to us, good work!

Amazing work! I grew up with you as the drummer for Alice Cooper, House of Lords, and Impellitteri (you played on all my favorites from him and I still prefer your playing though he has had some monster players across the years) and always loved how tasteful and nuanced your playing was. Your Neil influence showing in some ways I suppose despite those bands being more straightforward. You've always had a character to your playing. Love listening to these renditions. I'd listen to as many as you are willing to do.

TY so much! It's pretty good on this song, actually. There are some punches here and there you have to match, and try to lock with any changes, but I would say for this time period and the way things were recorded back then its quite good. You can hear the middle section surge forward a bit, and again some of the punches.
