So no ozone, no uv, no amino, no carbon dosing. It seems like it was lost decade, I mean, we try to invent and do new things but the basics works , even better maybe. Anybody agrees?

dude, it wasnt mrsa. it was staph. you have it growing on your skin right now. and serratia is not a gut bacteria. its the pink stuff on old shower curtains

In the pinned comment I clarified I mis spoke in regards to the MRSA comment In reference to serratia it is found both in the gastrointestinal tract and on shower curtains - not mutually exclusive - lots of studies about how it uniquely affects gastrointestinal cells when it becomes pathogenic in human bodies Check out the wiki or any peer reviewed work if you don’t believe me It’s also been linked to white pox disease on acropora in the wild - while there are strains used with probiotic affect in shrimp aquaculture it seems write large this species can be problematic Would need strain specific data and inoculation test to say more Thanks for watching

I adore Salem's stance here. It's a needed and informed perspective in a hobby that would rather reach for the easy fix with a bottle, than understand the risks associated with it. My background is in agricultural science where I'm a federally certified conservationist. And while I work with terrestrial systems, not marine. The reefing hobby's cavalier attitude towards antibiotic and pesticide use is very worrisome. Reefing's approach of ignoring all other fields who have used antibiotics and pesticides regularly for decades, and ignoring those negative outcomes, is a recipe for eventual disaster. That's not to say antibiotics and pesticides should not be used, rather they should be selective and narrowly targeted. This hobby really needs to step back and understand what responsible use is for these compounds, follow established protocols (or fund professionals to create needed ones), understand what modes of action are, how to rotate them, and understand you need to be treating a well identified target organism. I cringe every time a reefer mentions a prophylactic treatment or worse a whole tank treatment for some perceived problem, or worse unknown problem. Odds are very good that reefers are well on there way to creating worse, and resistant pests when they use those two things on a regular basis. You want to see where this care free attitude around chemical pest treatments goes, look at the groups who raise animals and photosynthetic organisms by the thousands and millions, for decades. Go look at how many antibiotic resistant issues the cattle and poultry industry face, to say nothing of household pets. Go look at the number or herbicide resistant pest plant or insecticide resistant insects agriculture deals with. That's the result of half-a**ing or ignoring scientific guidelines for decades because it was 'too difficult' or they couldn't financially afford too. The end result is always the same, they wind up with a more difficult pest to control with fewer options on how to control it. It's why agriculture puts millions of dollars behind research and education of farmers and industry professionals. And reefing is casually ignoring all of it, and walking down that same well traveled path. Second, I completely agree the design process can be very enjoyable. I'm 2 years into my current upgrade process, and fully expect it to take a solid three more years before I officially fill it and start to establishing it properly. And it comes on the heels of several years simply sketching it out, doing calculations, and comparing options. Given the cost associated with even a modest size tank, why rush the design process? Half my extended timeline is due to budgeting the build and spacing out purchases, but the other half is simply trying to evaluate my options and sleep on it for weeks prior to any serious investments. I had a blast pricing out different size aquariums, and sketching in where they would best fit in my home. I went through a good dozen iterations before committing to a final location and tank purchase. And that's not counting the rest, the sump, the equipment choices, any supporting tanks... It's a hobby, take all the time you want. So long as you're enjoying the process. Finally, I adore that Reef Builders is sponsoring community science efforts to better understand the hobby. Thank you, and I hope you keep it going with more in the future.

It will be a combination of inorganic and organic nutrients that affect their growth combined with flow, o2 content, prescience of competition etc I have noticed that in some of my systems in the past before I went down the DOC rabbit hole that if my no3 was sub 10 I had issues with it - likely because they can fix nitrogen and thus do well in lower nitrogen environments compared to other species Although I wouldn’t consider 6ppm low in terms of the microbial world like I said I have noticed patterns with cyano dissipating once po4 and no3 are “in balance” in a way that many in the hobby describe (no3 greatly outpacing po4 by a factor of x,y,z)

A couple points of clarity…in the case of two of the products, a sample size of two (not one and one of them purchased several years apart), I’m aseptically trained, but I did not pull my samples in a BSC much like I didn’t pull my tank samples in a BSC. Why say all that? I think the results I have are fun, and I’d love for you to independently test, but I’d also like to retest when you’re testing. That independent thing matters. Buy your bottles now and test, because maybe some of these companies are taking a look. In fact, I know one is taking a look. Then later, buy the juice and test again. Come to MD. We’ll test together. I happen to know a guy with a BSC or two. This one is important. Salem mentioned MRSA, and that’s not what I found. My testing identified Staphylococcus aureus, but the AquaBiomics data I’ve been provided does not identify strains. We should NOT say MRSA when we don’t know if that bottle had a Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain. For accuracy’s sake, just mention staph. Jimbo
@ReefTherapy
@ReefTherapy 8 күн бұрын
Thanks for clarifying, Jim! We believe the key objective is to start testing these products on a larger scale to get a more accurate understanding. It's clear the hobby truly appreciates that you've started a trend to hold these companies accountable. So you have identified a problem in the hobby, you have a good background knowledge of the issue. You've identified the difficulties in fixing this problem. This is the moment that every entrepreneur dreams about! If all these bottled bacteria companies are doing it wrong, then find a way to do it right! Come up with a product that an average reefer can implement and make some money man. You guys have said it's difficult to farm these beneficial pelagic bacteria but there are some labs that can do it, well let's get it done. This is a huge opportunity for some breakthrough product to hit the shelves. These companies make millions on these bact-o-bottles, seems like there is an opportunity here. I truly hope you come up with something, cause I know I would buy something that could help refresh my tanks biome.
@ReefTherapy
@ReefTherapy 8 күн бұрын
We don't want to say that they are ALL doing it wrong because I'm sure that's not their intention. Furthermore, it could have just been the bottles tested...we need more data. It sucks, but I think blind trust isn't going to get the hobby anywhere so I'm hoping conversations like this and the testing Jim has done will get the ball rolling in the right direction to make some actual changes.
