I'm surprised ships don't block these. They can cause a lot of problems on the network.
@BlueMonkey4n64 күн бұрын
What kind of problems do the travel routers cause? They are merely a way for my non technical family members to use a hotel or ship wifi without having to figure out the log in process. I log in to the wifi with the travel router at the hotel or cruise ship. Their devices just sign in to the travel router no matter where they are. Much simpler for them and I dont have to do tech support on our vacations.
@How2s-N-Stuff3 күн бұрын
@@BlueMonkey4n6 They duplicate a process that the network is already doing, DHCP, which is assigning IP addresses to devices. I recently retired from managing networks for one of the largest retailers in the US. The Store Employees would connect their own wireless routers to the store network and cause issues with duplicating IPs. We spent a lot of time chasing them down and blocking the switch ports. However, if the ships aren't blocking them, maybe they have a way to prevent issues.

@Cruiser202512 күн бұрын
Hi, Currently on a Princess Cruise. Tried this process - seemed ot work for about 30 mins then (either) the Router hung OR something prevented ongoing access thru the router to the MedallionNet system onboard. I am not looking to scam the system, just tired of logging devices on one at a time (I am the only one travelling and I have a couple of devices). How do I 1/ validate why the system prevented furhter access and make the solution more robust/reliable? Any insight would be great....
@BlueMonkey4n612 күн бұрын
Hmm interesting that it works for about half an hour then stop. I have been on a few Princess Cruises in the last 2 years and the TPLink and Mango both work well. What model of router are you using? And I winder if there is some setting on your router that times out after 30 minutes?
@Cruiser202511 күн бұрын
@@BlueMonkey4n6 Good question. I have the TL WR902AC. I could not find a timeout value on the admin pages, but I may not have been looking at the right places? As a test, I also brought a GL-SFT1200. That also times out (but it took longer to time out) and there seems to intermittenet re-connection activity (it will work for 30-60 minutes randomly thru the day). Are these clues helpful?
@Cruiser202511 күн бұрын
Quick Update - still having intermittent time outs on both Routers. Really trying to find a solution to this - perhaps my earlier message was helpful in providing clues? This has become a little more "interesting" because we are now looking at going on another (much longer) cruise on Princess in the coming months and I'd love to get your expertise to implement a longer-term and reliable solution. Would a different router be a better choice? Is there a potential to create a configuration "script" or file that would be helpful? Even a set of instructions that (if followed) would be a more robust solution?..... Thanks for reviewing ....
@BlueMonkey4n610 күн бұрын
Sorry but I dont have any answers for you. The fact that the timeouts are pretty regular leads me to think its a setting on your router. I cant imagine the ship kicking your connection off but letting you back on later. Unless you are using a random MAC address every time, maybe? Then again you are using two routers from different companies so I can imagine they both have default timeout settings. I also have these same two brands of routers and have used them on Princess without issues. This is a mystery.

Then the announcer starts talking super fast about all the side effects that can come with the drug like headaches, nausea, rapid heart beat, fever, diarrhea, vomiting, seizures, death… Linux could also be a pain in the butt!!! With that being said, I still love Linux 🤓

It's amusing how many people are drawn to these "travel routers." Are they not aware that Windows 10 and 11 laptops have a built-in hotspot feature? Yes, you can enable a hotspot directly on your computer, allowing other devices to connect through it, essentially transforming your laptop into a router. There's no need for additional gadgets. It's akin to those who invest in mobile hotspots without realizing that many phones can function as hotspots, provided their carrier allows it. To set up a hotspot on Windows 11, navigate to: Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Hotspot.

Thank you for the excellent episode! I really appreciate the clear structure of the video-it’s very well done. However, based on my experience, I believe it’s missing a couple of important pieces of input data: - Configuration of your PC with Caine Linux - Entropy level of the data on the source drive Both have a strong influence on the final performance. Also, here’s a little tip for the community: When formatting drives, consider using a larger NTFS or exFAT cluster size. This simple adjustment can noticeably improve the final write speed of DD/E01 image files.
@BlueMonkey4n624 күн бұрын
Excellent suggestions on the cluster size, I just did the default values that Windows uses as the starting point. I will add that to the list of possible future videos. Good points about the configuration of the computer and the entropy level of the drive. For this video, I was more focused on the difference between dd/E01 and NTFS/ExFAT so I figure a computer with a reasonable recent processor and enough RAM was sufficient. As for the source drive, I had it probably 80% filled with a mixture of data files (that lend well to compression) and video files (that wont compress).

@BlueMonkey4n629 күн бұрын
Thanks for the compliments and glad you found the videos useful. In terms of practice, here is what I have my class doing: 1. Boot Paladin on your forensic workstation and format a destination drive with NTFS and then do it again with ExFAT (for my Linux class I have them do ext4) 2. Boot the machine that you want to image with Paladin. Attach destination drive and perform these 3 types of imaging: 2a. Image to dd using 4GB segments and obtain a hash (MD5 or SHA1) 2b. Image to E01 using 4GB segments and compression and obtain a hash (MD5 or SHA1). Check that the hash matches the one when you imaged using dd. 2c. Perform a clone. Insert a USB thumbdrive into machine and use it for the output log. Once again check the hash to make sure it matches the one from the previous steps. Bonus: convert the clone image into an E01 image. Again always check the hash to ensure the image integrity. Not sure if this is what you are looking for but I hope it helps.

Different models of travel routers may have slightly different features but the basic steps should be the same: configure the router to connect to the ship WiFi, sign in to the captive portal, connect devices to router for Internet access. Just another comment: I use the GL-iNet router when I stay at AirBnB locations with my D-Link cameras, as it's often difficult to find the router at these locations. I can connect the GL-iNet to the AirBnB Wi-Fi, then connect the camera to the GL-iNet, much like what's done in this video, although my D-Link cameras are on a Cloud account, so I can then view the camera from anywhere I have Internet access. Very handy!

I'm wondering also if the imaging software makes a difference in speeds too (ex. Guymager vs. some other imager)
@BlueMonkey4n6Ай бұрын
Yes, the software does make a difference! I have speed tested using the command line (dd/ftkimager*) to create E01s and whatever Guymager is doing is faster than dd/ftkimager. * in case people dont know, Access Data FTK Imager has a linux command line version.
@vitaliy.mokosiy26 күн бұрын
Absolutely. The main reason is the engineers and the amount of work they do on this or that tool. When you make a freeware, there are not so many test cases and performance testing done with various PC configurations, OSs and everything. Typically, a status of free software leads to less accountabiity and that leads to less development effort. So I would predict very different results for such imagers under different conditions. As opposed to that, commercial imagers are faster. Hardware imagers are way faster than anything else due to the fact that vendors have a very specific hardware. So the engineering team can focus on performance with a specific set of hardware and software and deliver the best value. You know, to some extent, it's like a PlayStation 5 which is highly optimized to run all the games.

@BlueMonkey4n6 sorry to jump in the band wagon... im no network expert so correct me if im wrong. yes you should connect the router on first instance when you onboard your wifi package so it can capture your IP\MAC address. i think some ships assign static IPs, dont know. anyway, you need to connect ur android device to router, now this is where i think cruise will detect this, will the cuise ship see another MAC on their network or will they only see the Routers MAC? In anycase, I think i read somwhere on redit that you connect your Phone first to the Cruise wifi network. then on your travel router, you clone the MAC address of your phone and set IP to static. This way, when the router connects to Cruise's network, it will see that its already has a MAC regiseted ie the phone and will allow the router to connect. hope someone on here has had experience and could shed some light!! Thanks
@BlueMonkey4n6Ай бұрын
The method you cited about using the phone first to connect is another valid way of connecting. That method is a bit more involved in my opinion that's why I recommend my method. The MAC cloning method has these steps: 1) log in to cruise network via phone and log out; 2) change MAC on router to match MAC on phone; 3) configure router to connect to ship WiFi 4) sign in to captive portal 5) all devices can now log into router The method I recommend has these steps: 1) log in to router network via phone 2) configure router to connect to ship WiFi 3) sign in to captive portal 4) all devices can now log into router To answer your question about the MAC that the ship will see, they will only see the MAC of the router and not of the devices behind it.
