Many thanks for this Mr Lima - I love film commentaries and since DVDs have gone out of fashion I don't get to hear this level of detail behind the creative/filming process any more. He was the heart of Enchanted, this guy made probably the 2nd or 3rd best live-acton/animated movie since Who frame roger rabbit. if he didn't tell the writer to not do another script draft, the movie could"ve been a whole different thing. This dude basically retired on his prime after this movie. Director that don"t come very often in family movies

Kevin, I have to tell you ever since this movie came out, it became my favorite. I wanted to buy it right after we saw it in theaters but had to wait for it to go on dvd it felt like forever. Once it was out we bought it and watched it so many times. I loved learning some new things from the movie that you shared. I think a lot of would also agree with me that you should’ve done disenchanted. I know that you would’ve made it just as good as this one or maybe even better. Not sure if you can answer this or not but, if you were asked to direct it. How would you have done it? Like what would you have done to disenchanted?

I'm not sure I can answer your question with a definitive answer... way back in 2007, I had an idea for a sequel in which the structure flipped on itself in which the real world became animated, like really turned into animation. due to some Hollywood politics, I never got the chance to flesh out the idea. So happy you love the first film though!

I don't know how many times I've watched Enchanted already! It's by far my favourite Disney movie alongside with The Princess and the frog. It just brings me all the happiness, I love the Art, aesthetic, colors, music and the history that tells us! ♡ I'm so sad Giselle is not an Official Disney Princess, because her design is the prettiest of all of them, especially at the beginning of the movie with the Alfons Mucha vibes! I remember watching this movie as a kid at the Cinema with my parents, and how much I wanted to live in Giselle's Tree house! (I still do, haha) Thank you kindly for all the effort on this movie, it will always have an special place in my Heart ♡

Thank you for sharing all of this with us 🙏🏻 I like Disenchanted for what it is, but it’s such a shame they didn’t beg you to direct it honestly. Thank you Mr Lima for this amazing commentary, I hope you are well. I really enjoy and love this film. I have one question. I read, a long tome ago that the climax was darker, is it real?, because the dragon in the poster is a little quite different than the dragon in the movie, and even narissa's death would be diffent? If is it real, what would be the real fight and death between narissa and giselle?
@KevinLimaOfficial
@KevinLimaOfficial Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure it was darker, but it was more intense. Giselle was whisked away and Edward and Robert both fought to find her, racing through the crowded streets of NYC, Robert ending up on horseback and having to chop through a thorny thicket which had engulfed the Chrysler Building, like SLEEPING BEAUTY to get to Giselle.

About Mary Costa and Ilene Woods, Woods passed away in 2010 of Alzheimer's. Only 4 years after Enchanted was filmed. She most likely wasnt up to the task. Mary Costa was still active in show business up until about 2009ish and then officially retired. She is still alive at 92. I know Mary and Ilene were very good friends and if Ilene wasnt up to it perhaps Mary felt it wouldn't have been right to do it without her. Sad because it would have been amazing to see them in the film. My two favorite princesses.

I loved watching this film, it was my first Disney film on the big screen as a 7 year old and I fell in love with Disney Animation. Is it true that Giselle was considered a Disney Princess? I feel like she would have fit in perfectly with the past disney heroines like Ariel and Aurora

I was originally disappointed that the Enchanted DVD and Bluray didn't have commentary because I think it should be a standard for all big films, Disney or other studio to have a commentary track (sadly Disney Animation movies haven't had a commentary track as a standard since Meet the Robinsons with exceptions for The Princess and The Frog and Moana/Vaiana, for those were directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, right now it's just Pixar who have commetnary for every movie they had done) but better late than never, as they say! One question, Kevin: When Giselle tells the "alternative" story of Red Riding Hood, was that version to be meant as a spoof on how the fairy tale characters and stories were parodied on The Shrek films? The first time and everytime I watch Enchanted and it comes to this moment, when I think about the scene of Red chasing around The Wolf around his grandma's house, wielding an axe, it sort of feels like something that belonged in a Shrek film, kind of "dark" and close to cynical like Dreamworks did with the Shrek films. Was it done on purpose or just a mere coincidence?
@KevinLimaOfficial
@KevinLimaOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
First off, thanks for watching Mats, really do appreciate it. It seems that since DVD/BluRay sales began to wain, the studios have really cut back on extras. Sign of the times. About the Little Red bedtime story...It wasn't done as a nod to the SHREK films and honestly, and looking back, I wish we had thought to have Giselle tell a story that pointed towards a classic Disney trope - I guess that one's on Bill and me.

So this is gonna be a long comment so apologies for the length. First off I love how the film uses different aspect ratios for the animation and live action scenes. Even though this is a love letter to Disney, that choice to switch between ratios feels very much like how in the Wizard of Oz because of the creation of technicolor the film would switch from black and white to color. Keeping on the subject of animation now I did listen to this commentary last night without watching the film (seen it a few times to know what moments in the film you're talking about) and when you mentioned Rick Baker's makeup on the Queen's Hag disguise, as someone who has seen some of the films Baker (three of which were directed by Barry Sonnenfeld) has done makeup for its very animated. Moving on to the second song of the movie I don't know why it didn't occur to me but when you mentioned why you compared casting Amy Adams (who I forgot was in this movie, I thought she only did the Disney film she did in 2011's the Muppets) in this movie to Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins, A Happy Working Song is this film's version of a Spoonful of Sugar. Taking a minute to stop to talk about Giselle's curtain dress but out of all the dresses she wears in the movie, while the fairytale dress she wears in the beginning and the modern 21st dress she wears at the ball, I do like the in-between of this one. Also unrelated fact it wasn't until a few years ago I was watching a top 10 things you missed about a show on Netflix that Sonnenfeld worked on; and it mentioned in the background a character had cut out a dress from a circus tent. The reason I mentioned this is because by that point I forgot this movie existed. Two things: When this movie came out, I was seven years old and I'm not gonna lie I didn't find it funny. Cut to now 15 years later three months ago I was sitting in the Library at my University having a coke and watching this film because Disenchanted was coming out in November. Maybe this was because 15 years had passed but I actually found it funny. Then again my sense of humor had developed over 15 years. The second thing now you had mentioned Edmund Lyndeck earlier well Timothy Spall I think right after he did this movie, he played Beadle Bamford in the film adaptation of Sweeny Todd which was released about a month after this film. The King and Queen's Ball...hands down like any Disney princess musical visually stunning. One thing I like about the song So Close is that from a story perspective it tells the audience hey the film is almost at the end. speaking of the climax props to all the work ya'll did in turning the Susan Sarandon into a giant dragon (which by the way side note I love how Sarandon like any actor playing a Disney villain is having a ball with the roll). Talking about executives who think oh boys wouldn't like this film because its a fairytale, as 22 year old I can say seven year old me was someone who liked fairytales or at least stuff that had fantasy elements. With all that said this was a great commentary Mr. Lima I hope you get to do something like this again in the future maybe for another movie you did (maybe 102 Dalmatians and going from animation to live action) or worked on. Wasn't expecting this commentary until I saw it my recommendations and thought hey maybe listen to hear what stories happened behind the scenes on your second theatrical live action film. Again apologies for the length of this comment its just there was so much to say.

Hello Mr.Lima, It’s wonderful to hear your take on the movie! Before watching this I noticed that the beginning and end scenes mirrored each other! Also, I love the similar dialogue Robert and Giselle exchange when they ask each other “if it’s a habit of theirs to fall out of stuff” when they first meet and later profess their love. It’s a great recurring theme to have all these scenes come back in different forms! I do have a question? In the restaurant scene why was the script (shown in this video) different from the lines Robert (in the final cut) said regarding his backstory? The Final Cut he sort of summarizes what the script had but it would’ve been nice to hear it all out. Was it a timing problem? Thank you for directing this movie! It is so well-made and is one of my top favorite movies! I love Robert and Giselle, especially her character arc!! ❤ :)

Hey Dana, to answer your question…I’ve never been a fan of characters just plainly stating their emotional journey. It feels like every film now (especially animated films) are therapy sessions. My guess is we may have cut the Lynne’s you noticed for that reason.

@@KevinLimaOfficial Thanks for answering and clarifying things! Knowing your approach it makes sense why the lines were cut. Also, Enchanted is a film about staying hopeful in a troublesome world and like you say a “love letter to Disney”, so keeping most of the lines would’ve made the scene a little too melancholic for the movie. Nevertheless, after all these years it’s still great to see unknown glimpses/lines/scenes of the movie!

Thank you for this commentary! I just wanted to make a note, about the rats after the "Happy Working Song". I've owned pet rats for over 2 years now. You mention "we were told it doesn't hurt them" to pick them up by their tails, but I think that's no longer accepted as true. Baby rats are light enough that it's not too much weight put on their tail when you do that, but adult rats can be very heavy, and especially if you don't pick them up right at the BASE of the tail, it could be dangerous to their spine. But I understand, this movie was made in 2007... Anyway, I hope you can see this comment, and spread the knowledge!
