This man create a Disney masterpiece, from the creativity to the music and the amazing cast. Amy Adams really feels Giselle in the way that she acts by just moving her arms gives her character so much personality and the innocence that it gives to the character that goes from being angry to expressing many emotions at the same time, she is great.

Thank you for mentioning how marketing departments and other higher-ups actively try to sabotage good, creative, wholesome films, in a petty attempt to show that they know more about what audiences want better than actual film makers. I wish he would have directed disenchanted. The sequel is good but Enchanted is a masterpiece that doesn't compare. I feel that disenchanted lacked those touches that Kevin did in the first film like they forgot about Giselle boutique. I would have love to see Giselle create dresses but this time for her baby. Something that characterizes Giselle was her tender way with children and her taste for fashion. I liked the detail of adding a baby on disenchanted, but is not relevant. Giselle is a very motherly character and they could have composed a lullaby that Giselle would sing to Sofía, instead of making meaningless songs.
@estefy10052 жыл бұрын
True, the baby doesn't add much to the story. Doesn’t make any sense to give a magic wand to a baby she never uses it. The baby went unnoticed throughout the movie. If Giselle at the end of the movie was going to die (disappear) then the baby would also have disappeared and no one cared about her lol. I would have liked to see more interaction between them like in the first movie where Giselle had motherly behaviors with Morgan and felt very organic.
@yellowRose8062 жыл бұрын
I would love to have seen more dynamics of the couples lives as they're adjusting to their new normal. Even have Robert, Giselle, and Morgan travel together to Andalasia. I didn't like that Robert forgot the fairy tale life and thought it was dream.

@@estefy1005 But remember, that was him under the effects of a spell. It’s still not a contradiction of his character, it’s just the way to spell worked when Gisele wished her life to be like a fairytale, the same way she unintentionally turned into an evil wicked stepmother EH? :-)
@estefy10052 жыл бұрын
Well, Robert's character did evolve thanks to Giselle’s influence. He went from being sarcastic and realistic to be more charismatic with her. He sings very softly to her at the dance ,but HE SINGS. At the end he also seems very happy and does a funny little dance.

Enchanted kind of reminds me of the fantasy films of the late 1940’s (I’m thinking of such films as Miracle On 34th Street and It’s a Wonderful Life) where a magical person/character comes into a very realistic (and slightly cynical) landscape and ultimately changes the main characters’ lives for the better. If this film had been made in that era I think it would’ve still been a hit, which shows just how timeless the story seems.

The moment when Giselle realizes she’s changed as a person and can never go back blows me away every time, as well as the scene right after with Robert sitting alone in shock. He pulls in his robe like he still feels the linger of her touch and is trying to suppress it. Whoever’s idea that little detail was, it was brilliant. Another great moment is Edward’s reaction on finding out Giselle was never his true love. There’s no hint of jealousy or regret on his face for even a second. To me, this shows he really is pure of heart, that the Prince archetype isn’t just a facade or a role he plays. Man, I could go on and on, I love this movie :)

Hi, Thank you for making this ! It was long overdue… I read most of the previous comments and I’m amazed at the level of love this film got from the audience. Even from kids who weren’t old enough to have the references or the understanding of what "real life" meant. That’s how you recognize good films. The characters and the story are strong enough to pull anyone in. I’ve been working in Animation for 17 years now (and I know a few people from the 2D crew :) ) and I love how you worked and worked on the story and the characters so they made sense and came alive in both worlds. Even when the suits were trying to tank the film because they don’t get that. And the secret storyboards and story reels were pure genius ! As a story artist myself, I can only agree with you on every level ! You have to have a storyboard. If it’s not working, having it colored and orchestrated is never gonna save anything… Like you, I truly love Amy Adams in this film and the way she absolutely became the character, the way she moves and evolves, and this sequence where she gets angry is a masterpiece. She gets through 6 emotions in 10 seconds and you read them all. That’s fine acting ! And filming these spontaneous moments ahead of the rest is something I’m gonna remember ! :) I watched Disenchanted right before watching your commentary, and they didn’t get it. They didn’t understand the characters, their arcs, their personalities… Everything just feels off somehow. Moving things on a screen. And speaking of which, the animation is drastically… let’s say different… I felt violated when I saw a rotoscoped version of Marc Davis’ Cinderella’s transformation. That was Disney’s favorite scene. Just like he loved Feed The Birds and you understood the reason why. They didn’t. So. Not as traumatic as this thing they had the nerve to call Pinocchio but definitely hollow. Yours will survive, and judging by these comments, for a long time… :)

Wow. This was practically a belated birthday present (November 11th) for me. This movie means a lot to me, I've been watching it since I was 8 years old. I loved renting it with my dad while he was still around 🤍 If you want to talk more about the film, I'm all ears. I never get tired of Enchanted. It's a film that has always touched my heart, even now at 23 I still seem to have the same spirit as Giselle, especially the mannerisms. I can't talk without moving my hands like I'm a Disney princess 🤣 I continue, even after so many bad things have happened in the real world, trying to see it in a kind and magical way. So really thank you for this documentary. I really wish you had directed Disenchanted, without you the movie wasn't exactly what I expected after 15 years of waiting. Anyway, thanks again Kevin. You are an amazing director. Kisses & hugs from Brazil 🇧🇷💙

Hello Mr. Lima!!! I was always a fan of Enchanted. I still remember the day I watched it in theaters! I was 16 years old. So many easter eggs! I only noticed a small handful of them. Great planning! Recently I've seen the film and I appreciate it more than before. I relate to Giselle now. I'm a millennial whose still struggling to be an adult with a child-like mind. I also love musical theater. THANK YOU for the life lesson about Fantasy vs. Reality. I haven't seen the sequel yet and I was dissapointed you weren't involved with it at all. I'm still looking forward to it.

Hello Mr.Lima, It’s wonderful to hear your take on the movie! Before watching this I noticed that the beginning and end scenes mirrored each other! Also, I love the similar dialogue Robert and Giselle exchange when they ask each other “if it’s a habit of theirs to fall out of stuff” when they first meet and later profess their love. It’s a great recurring theme to have all these scenes come back in different forms! I do have a question? In the restaurant scene why was the script (shown in this video) different from the lines Robert (in the final cut) said regarding his backstory? The Final Cut he sort of summarizes what the script had but it would’ve been nice to hear it all out. Was it a timing problem? Thank you for directing this movie! It is so well-made and is one of my top favorite movies! I love Robert and Giselle, especially her character arc!! ❤ :)
@KevinLimaOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Hey Dana, to answer your question…I’ve never been a fan of characters just plainly stating their emotional journey. It feels like every film now (especially animated films) are therapy sessions. My guess is we may have cut the Lynne’s you noticed for that reason.
@danareyes26362 жыл бұрын
@@KevinLimaOfficial Thanks for answering and clarifying things! Knowing your approach it makes sense why the lines were cut. Also, Enchanted is a film about staying hopeful in a troublesome world and like you say a “love letter to Disney”, so keeping most of the lines would’ve made the scene a little too melancholic for the movie. Nevertheless, after all these years it’s still great to see unknown glimpses/lines/scenes of the movie!

Great Commentary! Thank you so much for making this! Odd, specific question, but at 41:02, Do you remember who animated the shot where Narissa (in the pot) pulls down the Apple, then lets it rise to the surface?
@KevinLimaOfficial2 жыл бұрын
I do not. I know Andreas Deja animated many of the Narissa scenes, but James Baxter had his hands all over so much of the animation that I have trouble discerning who did what. I wonder if I have a animation scene breakdown. Is it that important that you know?
@petie.doon45442 жыл бұрын
It’s not super important, but thanks for reply. I just love how that shot combines the real world props and the 2D (it’s really impressive), and I just love looking up rough animation of my favorite shots after seeing movies. So sometimes to find specific shots online, one has to figure out who animated them, cause then maybe that animator could have the shot on their reels or something like that ^^ but again, no worries if you don’t have the scene breakdown. Was just curious. Thanks again

Just wanted you to hear something about my own experience with fantasy and naiveté. I'm now an old lady, but back when I was a child, I had the glorious opportunity to watch Mary Martin in "Peter Pan". Beautiful production. I believe it was the 1960 broadcast. Now jump forward to 1973 when it was once again broadcast. My boyfriend and his buddy held a watch party at the buddy's house. I was so looking forward to watching and singing along with this magical show, but... My boyfriend and his buddy kept making cynical remarks and rude jokes about the action onscreen. Heart-wrenching. I had always striven to maintain my innocence, and these buffoons had no sense of innocence. I still have my sense of innocence. It's what makes things like Harry Potter so enjoyable. As for those two, my boyfriend broke up with me over a woman who decided she wanted him for herself. He tried to get me back, but we were done; so, they married. Later, my boyfriend's buddy slept with the woman he married. He never talked to his friend again. THAT is what cynicism will get you.

8:45 Did James Baxter design them for that sequence, or did someone else design them first? Did Claire Keane design the pink dress as well as the wedding dress and the blue dress?
@KevinLimaOfficial2 жыл бұрын
As with any animated film, there are many character designers that explore what the characters could look like. Troy Quane (the director of SPIES IN DISGUISE) and Harald Seiperman were the first, then Lisa Keene did some work and finally, James Baxter pulled it all together.

So this is gonna be a long comment so apologies for the length. First off I love how the film uses different aspect ratios for the animation and live action scenes. Even though this is a love letter to Disney, that choice to switch between ratios feels very much like how in the Wizard of Oz because of the creation of technicolor the film would switch from black and white to color. Keeping on the subject of animation now I did listen to this commentary last night without watching the film (seen it a few times to know what moments in the film you're talking about) and when you mentioned Rick Baker's makeup on the Queen's Hag disguise, as someone who has seen some of the films Baker (three of which were directed by Barry Sonnenfeld) has done makeup for its very animated. Moving on to the second song of the movie I don't know why it didn't occur to me but when you mentioned why you compared casting Amy Adams (who I forgot was in this movie, I thought she only did the Disney film she did in 2011's the Muppets) in this movie to Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins, A Happy Working Song is this film's version of a Spoonful of Sugar. Taking a minute to stop to talk about Giselle's curtain dress but out of all the dresses she wears in the movie, while the fairytale dress she wears in the beginning and the modern 21st dress she wears at the ball, I do like the in-between of this one. Also unrelated fact it wasn't until a few years ago I was watching a top 10 things you missed about a show on Netflix that Sonnenfeld worked on; and it mentioned in the background a character had cut out a dress from a circus tent. The reason I mentioned this is because by that point I forgot this movie existed. Two things: When this movie came out, I was seven years old and I'm not gonna lie I didn't find it funny. Cut to now 15 years later three months ago I was sitting in the Library at my University having a coke and watching this film because Disenchanted was coming out in November. Maybe this was because 15 years had passed but I actually found it funny. Then again my sense of humor had developed over 15 years. The second thing now you had mentioned Edmund Lyndeck earlier well Timothy Spall I think right after he did this movie, he played Beadle Bamford in the film adaptation of Sweeny Todd which was released about a month after this film. The King and Queen's Ball...hands down like any Disney princess musical visually stunning. One thing I like about the song So Close is that from a story perspective it tells the audience hey the film is almost at the end. speaking of the climax props to all the work ya'll did in turning the Susan Sarandon into a giant dragon (which by the way side note I love how Sarandon like any actor playing a Disney villain is having a ball with the roll). Talking about executives who think oh boys wouldn't like this film because its a fairytale, as 22 year old I can say seven year old me was someone who liked fairytales or at least stuff that had fantasy elements. With all that said this was a great commentary Mr. Lima I hope you get to do something like this again in the future maybe for another movie you did (maybe 102 Dalmatians and going from animation to live action) or worked on. Wasn't expecting this commentary until I saw it my recommendations and thought hey maybe listen to hear what stories happened behind the scenes on your second theatrical live action film. Again apologies for the length of this comment its just there was so much to say.

@@KevinLimaOfficial First of all, I would like to say that I truly admire how respectful you are in answering the question I asked, given the fact they sort of went away with your precious masterpiece. The subtext of your comment makes me guess that you’re kind of bummed out about how Disenchanted turned out to be - well, that is: I am. The way you passionately speak about every choice you made in the original and why, to me confirms my hunch that the film makers of Disenchanted didn’t carefully made their choices serving a/the plot line, an/the underlying feeling/emotion, or carefully made choices at all. It certainly isn’t a love letter to Disney. They just mixed clichés, working from a place of what “works” (i.e. what is popular, what sells) and by doing so breaking characters, ignoring ánd neglecting all the character growth from the 1st one. Because I really liked that in Enchanted, each and every one of the characters grows and develops. In Disenchanted literally nothing has changed at the end of the movie. We’re right where we started. I couldn’t connect with the characters. I have watched the movie twice now and I still don’t know the character’s WHYs. They definitely could and should have “killed some darlings”. Most of the movie lacks necessity in every possible way. Menken’s music though is great (of course). The diddies are quite catchy (even though the lyrics are a bit disappointing sometimes). You say something about how in Enchanted, Schwartz exactly “hit the note” without being too obvious. Well, in Disenchanted, he failed. So to answer your question: the sequel to your Masterpiece really disappointed me, but I’m sure it wouldn’t have if you were the one making it, because it did have some good ingredients. They just didn’t use it right. Enchanted is a movie very dear to my heart, though. And your commentary truly made up for it all!
