I've played through every Final Fantasy except for the online games, which I've only dabbled in, and 16. When it comes to music though, outside of the trash soundtrack from Final Fantasy 14, 13, 15, and 7 Remake have great soundtracks. Additionally, you talk about the "depth" of Final Fantasy's combat. How about Final Fantasy 10's incredible depth, where it's simple common sense? Depending on the enemy, you swap to the correct party member and you OHKO that enemy, fast ground, Tidus, flying, Wakka, element, Lulu, machine, Rikku, hard shelled enemy, anyone since piercing on a weapon is not unique. If you play efficiently you'll never need to use Yuna, so this fundamentally broken combat system that doesn't give the entire party experience points requires the player to defeat two enemies and then swap between every party member and defend before they kill the remaining enemy so Yuna actually gets experience points. A sphere grid system that takes an absurd amount of time to actually level your characters. Yeah, Final Fantasy 10 just has so much depth and is an incredible masterpiece, it's not at all completely common sense swap characters and attack throughout 99.9% of the game /s. Being purely turn based or purely action does not mean that any game is without strategy. Even the most brain dead stupid game can have some form of strategy come from the player. Do I simply attack or do I wait for the enemy to make an action and then attack when I don't get hit. That is strategy. Whether you're playing an action game like Castlevania game, a puzzle game like Tetris, or an RPG like Final Fantasy, every thought and action you make is your strategy. Now Final Fantasy 7 Remake has a significant amount of depth to it, so if you were to go watch the videos I posted on chapter 9 for Hellhouse, you'll see a defeat the boss in seven minutes compared to what's normally going to be 10-15 minutes or more for most people, because there is depth to the battle system. Go watch Reno on chapter 8 where I finish the battle in a single minute including cutscenes, or Rude in two minutes. The battle on chapter 13 against Reno and Rude was certainly a bit rough though, that one looked pretty bad, but there's a great deal of strategy and depth to be used in these battles that will make you do better in these battles. These chapters aren't cut up cherry picked scenes, I've played each chapter from beginning to end. Of course I've played Final Fantasy 7 Remake multiple times and I also take pride on just how good I am at games in general. And it's not that I'm a fan of one or the other, I like all types of games, Final Fantasy 7 Remake was just that good, and the combat at least on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is even better. My favorite Final Fantasy is Final Fantasy 4 though and I like Final Fantasy 4 DS equally with any version of the original Final Fantasy 4 with a preference of the PSP version except for the GBA versions which are pretty bad performance wise. I like the DS version because it's pretty much hard mode, but I do prefer the other versions because just the overall build. When people talk about modern Final Fantasy though, it's like they forget that World of Final Fantasy exists. People obviously mean "action based" and "turn based" rather than modern, but World of Final Fantasy despite the easy difficulty is a fantastic game. I've had a lot more fun with it than any Dragon Quest Monsters or Pokemon game. Pick it up if you haven't. If you collect physical releases World of Final Fantasy Maxima for the Xbox One is the cheapest way to get the complete edition, or you can pay for the Switch import which is a lot more. The PS4 and Vita have the oriignal physical release which is the one I've played(even though I did buy the Xbox version.)

Check out the trailer for the upcoming game -Replaced. If FF did something like that... holy cow! Unfortunately it seems like Squeenix has been trying to find another Sakaguchi ever since he left. They keep handing the reins to who they think will be their next savior based on flash in the pan successes only to be let down later. There is no cohesive direction for the franchise and it shows with each release. Modern FF games, which I agree are "ok", really have nothing to offer besides the nostalgia of what was created by better teams and leaders.

Clive drives a great message home that we are flawed but in adversity we persevere no matter what! Ultima was a bit Alien and hard to understand or relate with at all but i think that was kind of the point. still my 4th or 5th fav in the series. Solid 7

I'm not saying everything in it is garbage or that there wasnt any effort put into it. I just don't think they know what theyre doing over there anymore. I give for example: plot ghosts. But yea the run they had between 4 and 10 is legendary. If I go back and play old rpgs I missed at the time, still to this day I am surprised when i look at who made it and find it was square soft. They made some of the best games of all time while simultaneously making over half of the rest of the genre. They owned jrpgs in the 90s. Wish they'd push the genre forward today instead of switching to linear action. Something like yakuza infinte wealths battle mechanics show there are definitely ways to make turn based better.

It's funny reading through the comments and seeing both sides of this debate. Some advocating for the direction XVI is taking and defending it's characters, stories, and even combat. Also those who defend the Golden Era of Final Fantasy as peak for its stories and perfect charm that resonate with us. A couple even bring up X and XII as peak when they were going in the right way with them. But everyone agrees that XV was a dumpster fire in story, character development, and quests right? lol. I didn't see a single comment advocating for XV. But more so for the direction of XVI. I will say imo, most of the charm and joy we as fans gained from FF as a series were the stories and the development of the characters in those stories. I don't think combat was the sole focal point otherwise you would also consider every turn base pokemon to be a gem, and we all know that's a lie. I see the new combat as a new style. But what always held me to FF were the stories and the characters coming to life within them. From cloud and his struggles, to Tidus and his calling, and now Clive bearing the weight of the world. That's what always kept me coming back. *cough* still nothing redeemable about XV.

FF16 is decently written, and I have no problem with the story, but I just can't understand the decision to copy the most basic slop in existence for gameplay. Yes, I'm talking about the switch to action combat. There is nothing wrong with action combat, but if I wanted to play that, I'd rather play Elden Ring for the seventh time instead of some hack and slash slodge. The entire reason I fell in love with this franchise was its deep RPG mechanics, builds, materia combos, the equipment system from 9, the Espers, the Sphere Grid, etc. 16 has no depth at all, and in fact, equipment barely functions, and 15 is even worse. I constantly catch myself being excited for the release of pixel remaster and replaying them several times, instead of playing any of the modern ones...
@Haseo13darknessКүн бұрын
I generally agree with this sentiment, Ive never really been a huge FF fan (only played FF6 and oddly enough Crisis Core but not FF7) but nothing about FF15 and 16 look even the slightest bit interesting to me and after watching a plot synopsis for both games on youtube im glad that I skipped them. That said, I feel like a lot of these points would probably hit better if there were actual examples shown on screen as they are mentioned.... rather than just B roll of the FF16 trailer.... so you're going to compare ff7, the most successful of the franchise, ff6 and ff9, both considered to stand with ff7, up against ff16, which is a good game but I can understand where some people may have issues, and ff15, the game EVERYONE knows for its problematic development, hence that one isn't even that entries fault to begin with. and then you fail to bring up ff8, which falls with your other golden entries in its timeframe but is looked further down at by other fans. And then how can you say that other FFs have political intrigue, but then not bring up ff16. It quite literally has a new mechanic built in where you can hit a button so you can be refreshed on the lore of what's going on in the world. And that doesn't even bring up that never did you bring up ff10 (besides a single song), ff12, or ff13, all of which are old enough now to not be clumped with 15 and 16. Honestly, the more I type, the more I realize that you're just a ps1 and before era glazer. All I'm seeing here is a heavily biased opinion of someone who just doesn't give modern Final Fantasy, and it's evolution, something that its been doing since the beginning, any type of fair shot and goes into each one with a pre set stigma. Honestly, you give me the impression that you've actually avoided and haven't played the new FFs, and are instead just giving the same negative points that classic fans always spout. In fact, no where in your channel did I find any content on ff16, instead just a plethora of ps1 and older gen stuff, and actually the only newer game I could find that contributes to this convo was Xenoblade 3, nothing else, which is only solidifying this idea to me. It seriously sounds like, in your case, this isn't a FF problem, this is a you not wanting to give new things a chance problem. Finally, next time you record, might wanna turn your phone on silent bud
@RetroAdamКүн бұрын
Yes I keep forgetting to turn my phone on silent oops 😅. I am definitely biased towards the old style of Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy XVI is ok in my books. Same with Final Fantasy XV. Just I prefer the ATB system, and also the world map and how side quest and exploration worked. Also, I know that they can't keep doing the same thing over and over. Hopefully they will eventually find a nice blend of the 2 systems that satisfy both old and new fans.

I disagree with your take, to say that FFXVI doesn't have political intrigue or strong enough fantasy topes has me wondering if we played the same game. XVI is steeped in the mythology of the universe and references the old games in it's narrative in satisfying ways like the World of Ruin from FFVI and the shattering of the crystals from FFV just to name a couple. It's ultimately Clive's story and moving to a single character action focus is breaking from the norm and trying a new style of gameplay, and while I can see people missing the party based style of the old games, but it's a brave direction to move the franchise in that will land for some and not others, and for those looking for a party based experience FFVII Rebirth is and incredible game in that style. Lastly the music in XVI is breathtaking, the work Masayoshi Soken and his team did to bring this world to life genuinely is some of the best in the franchise and is absolutely iconic
@RetroAdamКүн бұрын
Final Fantasy XVI has amazing music, I will give it that. It does have a pretty good political story as well. My gripe is more with the combat system and how the world is explored. The side quests are extremely basic, and I found the battle system very repetitive. It's not a bad game. I just prefer the old ATB system more I guess. Just another old school 40 year old wanting things to stay the way they used to be. 👴

The “fantasy” part seems to have diminished into a real-life-adjacent “twist” on reality. I get that swords and sorcery gets tired, but the realm of “fantasy” is unlimited. People often forget. Video games are a business. While fun and enjoyable. They are still a business. Long ago the up front one time cost model became outdated. People said they didn’t want to pay $65/game. So many companies discounted the upfront cost and introduced dlc or season passes as an ad on. You also have to understand that what works, works. Take call of duty. They put out a different sequel or version every year and while game loyalist may get upset about the cookie cutter VG. The truth is even though it’s the same game with updated graphics and some new maps. It still sells a million copies and makes tons of cash. So long as that continues it will continue. The Indy market and start ups are a way to get some good games. But the truth is the big studios have the resources to make the better games. And again the cash keeps flowing so they keep making. That’s just the way it is.

Why do I have to wait for a little bar to cross the screen or whatever. I think it's fun if you have to find like a really hard to find thing to then craft something really cool. Thinking back to like FF8 and upgrading the gunblade. But disassembling random stuff to then craft like a bandaid... waiting for the disassembling, then waiting for each bandaid to be made is just interrupting and taking away from actual gameplay and / or story... I don't need 100 million different pieces of items in a single player game... makes more sense in a multi-player environment with trading etc... but in a single player game it's just annoying
