You've inspired me to fix my SB 9 bed wear and the JB iron mix is quite the innovation. Time to step it up a bit and mix up a little thermite ...what could go wrong.

Nice work and Technique. Necessity is the Mother of Invention. The Lathe bed is really transformed at this point. I am going to restore a Ole Storm Vulcan 15C Crankshaft Grinder. I am sure it will be a challenge. Is your Green paint John Deere Green? I really like the color. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.👍

Try looking into the anti-backlash mechanism of a Bridgeport milling machine. They came up with a good successful design. Another good design are those from ball lead screw manufacturers. In fact, you might be able to get one to adopt to your required dimensions.

We are still looking for a smaller house to retire into. With a 1000sq ft garage/workshop that isn't attached to the house. It needs to house a couple of lathes and a couple of mills plus a surface grinder and a couple of motorcycles. My better half doesn't like the noise, hence unattached. Looking forward to seeing how you get on with yours.

@@Thesheddweller Well, I am perfectly willing to utterly hate the process if it leads to a gear that doesn't damage the other gear ( : For as short as it will be, I'll be the caretaker of an 80 years old lathe. I don't wanna be the end of her. Metallurgy is such a rabbit hole, at least seen from the outside. But I'll tackle that problem when the lathe is here.

How is the iron infused resin holding up? I'm very new to precision, and it seems to be a pretty flexible way to fix parts. I have some some crazy ideas of using something like this on top of carbon fiber plates to hone in some very makeshift and lightweight surface plates.
@Thesheddweller2 ай бұрын
Hi, the resin is still holding out quite well. however, it did get very messy when I first used it, the oil and some of the resin produced some pretty black grease at first, I suspect that the cast iron dust that I mixed into the resin has now stabilised the resin and although I suspect that the resin won't last as long as the iron Bed-way It should prolong the life of this lathe for a few years more. regards.
