It's a wonder that there weren't birds nesting inside that chuck! I guess that any chuck will benefit from periodic cleaning and we can't take anything for granted. Informative presentation! Keep up the good work!

This video is a treasure trove of knowledge. Now I can take my 3 jaw chuck apart and measure the same points and perhaps get more precision. Many thanks to you Paul.

What a spanking result, Paul. You ended up with tolerances that cost many hundreds of pounds buying new. I love its pulling the work in quirk as well. Now for a project.

Cracking work! I also have a taylors chuck on the Holbrook B9 I am rebuilding at the moment, and it is going to get this treatment when it comes to the top of the rebuilding pile! I also have a Colchester roundhead student and found when rebuilding that, a very similar error on a test bar inserted straight into the spinle taper adapter, there was error on the spindle taper, error on the adapter too,and when I blued it all up and carefully removed the dings with a scraper, like yours, it suddenly snapped back to spot on concentricity! These older machines were built to good standards! Thoroughly enjoyed the video! Phil

Good job! Except one thing: I do not grease the inside of my chucks any more. The movement of the parts against each other is so small that the grease doesn't effect too much. But it catches very effective all that parts and particles that you don't want to have in your chuck. A very light oiling with a bit thicker oil is enough and makes the cleaning - for example with compressed air, that's absolutely fine - much easier.
@Thesheddweller Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks. For the most part I agree with you, but this chuck had grease in it when I opened it, and thats the only reason I put some back. It is very well sealed, internally. However, your take on not putting grease back in was, probably the better choice. Cheers.

Love the way you went about this. Though personally i would have turned or ground back plate on bigger lathe or cylindrical grinder and then checked runout on its own before i put it together.
@Thesheddweller Жыл бұрын
I’ve only got the two lathes and my cylinder grinder won’t quite hold it. The chuck does hold better than it used to. Cheers

If he can, Paul needs to move your comment to the top. I'm amazed that more viewers weren't curious! It's such an oddball looking departure from typical design. It had to beg the question "*Why*"? Wakodahatchee Chris

I found by watching others, that these old machines are quite surprising when it comes to their tolerances of accuracy. At least that's what I'm hoping for as I have recently bought my own South bend 11"x48" lathe. I know it's not without its problems and limitations, but as a first lathe, I'm sure I could have done worse.
@Thesheddweller2 ай бұрын
all the best with your south bend lathe, you will be surprised how good even a worn out south bend can be. cheers

@@Thesheddweller suffering,,, after 22 years of marriage??? Oh, wrong answer😊 Yes mate a little. Head is better, but bit worried about going out at the moment with this cold snap. Got a full MRI of the back last Monday so hoping to hear something soon. Bit the bullet and seen the GP, she was good in fairness, hence the scan. She put me under pain management too. I quite numb most of the time in the body instead of just the head 🤣🤣🤣 You ok now??? Again, I do like that chuck design, not seen one like that before!

@@NellsMechanicalManCave I’m ok at the moment, I’ve still got some numb fingers on my left hand, but I haven’t missed my face while drinking my tea… not yet. I’ve now been taken off medication and i’m currently controlling my back pain with a new drug called lumpit. Glad your doctor has got the bull by the horns, so to speak (but don’t let you misses see that, I don’t want her getting the wrong end of the stick). 🤭 hurry up and get back in that bloody workshop. By the way the kitchen roller blind has finally made it into the workshop but, I won’t fit it yet, not until she’s forgotten about it. cheers👍

I wonder how much more that 3jaw chuck cost new compared to traditional chucks? I think the whole idea is very interesting but…. The one Taylor chuck for sale on eBay is priced at $175 plus international shipping. Also it doesn’t look like it was well taken care of. In a future episode it would be greatly appreciated if you could do a video on it including measurements so I can make my own. Thanks,
