I've been thinking that this year would be dry anyway, because three wet years in a row seems too good to be true

On my many years of farming I came to expect 4-6 week dry spell usually including January. February was usually the best month for rain sometimes starting February first. Not true the last few years.

Good morning, Mark and fellow weather watchers. As of 9:55 am it's ☀️ and 51° at the Orchard Cottage Weather Center in Oakdale, CA. Dew Point 39°. Humidity 67%. Winds out of the NNE at 3 mph. Gusts 8 mph. Barometer 30.21 steady. Morning low 31°. Loved your precipitation chart but we are already below normal here at Orchard Cottage. So I seriously doubt that we're going to see a normal rainfall season here in Oakdale this year. Bill

The creation of this ridiculous PDS acronym reminds me of the ROUSes from The Princess Bride. That acronym (for Rodents Of Unusual Size) was intentionally preposterous. This one isn’t. Of course Mark didn’t invent this, others did and he is just reporting it. I hope the people at the top of the weather reporting hierarchy realize how silly they sound, and how they are trivializing what should be a serious and significant warning. They need to come up with a suitably serious and not-at-all laughable way of describing a situation that is beyond the very reasonable-sounding red flag warning. And, Mark is the greatest. We miss watching him on KCRA but are grateful for his efforts here!

The government has to make acronyms out of everything. I work with the military and they do the same thing. 😅

Yes we get warnings similar to this every summer in Australia. We are use to it. Total fire Ban is one and and Extreme is another. Common sense really. Living in a high fire danger area, people should be aware of their warnings and use their phone apps.

Well with an ever warming climate and now a new warning level PDS, can a next-level warning HFS, be far behind…

We are also currently experiencing La Niña weather effect, which brings drier and warmer conditions to many regions, particularly in the southern region of the US.

It's a lie that wind speeds were "45 - 70 mph" in all 6 regions last week. Go look it up.
@markfinanweather21 сағат бұрын
Look at my post from last week. I showed the list of top wind gusts. The reports of '100mph winds' were greatly exaggerated
@BAsed_AFro22 сағат бұрын
Look up weather report in each area for last week and you'll find that the wind speeds were 0 - 7 mph or so (tops). Also, Pac Palisades wind was blowing S - SW and not north to have started the other fires.
@markfinanweather17 сағат бұрын
I urge you to look at my post from 1/8. Go to the 3:44 mark and I go through a list of wind gusts. These will be the top wind gusts from the previous 12 hours. My point at the time was wind speeds were being badly reported. They were bad but not as bad as some reporters made it sound.

For the few of that are disappointed with Mark’s weather analysis and don’t like his use of descriptive terminology, go somewhere else that suits your tastes. You’re just wasting our bandwidth. You’re not forced to watch this channel.

It's impossible to monitor all the psychopaths all the time. Has it been determined yet where / how last week's catastrophe started? Arsonists? Pyromaniacs? A few were apprehended, caught red handed, so to speak. It only takes one. This is a social as well as environmental problem. Just saying.

They do the same for hurricanes...by reporting winds at altitude (5K, 10K, etc.). The surface winds are never as strong as their doom reporting. I use an aviation weather app that gives me current and forecast conditions within a defined radius...and they're never as strong as media reports.

I think you weather people get off applying new names to the same situation. Atmospheric river for instance? It's called a storm, don't make it any scarier than what it is just for people to click on it. You disappoint more than anything.
