Wow, that’s the best piece on KZbin I’ve seen this year! Seriously, very helpful and interesting. If the regional resolution improves, this will be a game changer for reservoir operations, reducing flood risk and improving yields. Thanks!

8:34a 1/1/2025 just received this, it says 22h ago. Good Morning Mr Mark & all. Happy 2025 🎊 I knew you were a physics professor! You have so much knowledge and are a master of your field. And you have a wonderful way of delivering your information in a way that we first years can actually follow! Nothing replaces the human communication. You make me feel smarter when I realize that I’ve followed your iforcasts😀 👏🏼 always good to hear from you 👋🏼

The advancement of technology marches on. Using a green screen seems better than my old magnet board. AI could work in another 10 years. Time will tell. Happy New Year, everyone, and thanks, Mark for teaching us.

In the Fall of 1983, I started my college career at Modesto Junior College, and I eagerly took an introductory Meteorology class my first semester as I was genuinely interested in maybe making it my major. I had a wonderful instructor, in Donald Ahrens who wrote the text book for the class. He would spend time with all his students, individually, asking, "what is our interest in the class, and what our major was?" He did take interest in me, because I was attentive, but I told him, "Yeah, not sure. There is way too much math for me." 🙄 Who knew back then 🤷🏼

Happy New Year Mark! Thanks for the cool briefing! Your contribution to our collective weather knowledge is immense! The worrisome part of AI to me is taking past history and projecting future forecasts. The physics and chemistry of the atmosphere are in constant flux. While the past can predict similar “behavior” it will miss the nuance of subtle (and not so subtle) atmospheric real time aberrations and possibly new norms as climate change evolves. I agree that incorporating AI along with our ever evolving models is the way forward.

I just got a new cell phone. I noticed it has an AI weather app on it. We at the Orchard Cottage Weather Center in Oakdale, California have been using it along with our traditional weather equipment that we have here. You are right, it's just a tool in the toolbox. A new one at that. Just like TV never replaced radio. I see this the same way. I had to kind of laugh though when they show predicted rainfall 4 days ahead of today. Many times it's incorrect and not even close. But I understand it is new technology and will improve over time. We will still use greatly the Mark Finan Weather Center. Happy New Year Mark and fellow weather watchers Bill

Thanks Mark. Very interesting. I agree that the AI model would be helpful if it could be used for rainfall forecasting in our river basins.

That's some great stuff and reminds me of all the Thermodynamics equations I had to learn in college as an Engineer and we never use those now. AI is great but has to have human input at some point to add those things based on experience or common sense. Just as analytics is being used in sports and in some cases being relied on too much without factoring in other important things.

Happy new year. Like this content. Question is, can you do a quick cover on the crazy talk going around about “fog” being turned into weird conspiracies? Being our region gets it often and intense, I think your rational way on this topic and comparing to other religions that are weirded out by it would be definitely reposted!

Thanks Mark, I was wondering just how far along we've come. I bought a Tempest weather system, supposedly AI based, but truth is, it's pretty much a glorified thermometer. It's lousy ats a rain gauge, can't measure drizzle, forecast is always off by 10 degrees. But I've been in contact with support and they say they're working on improvements, they did adjust mine remotely, but it's still way off. Thanx, great info.

I enjoy your common sense view of the new technology application to weather forecasting. When I think of AI, I look at what is commonly thought of as the early adaptation, phone or computer Mapping and directions. Yep it nails the easy stuff but still can send you into a bad situation if you rely on it solely. Like computer generated directions there is no substitute for human experience (wisdom) to know better than to follow a poor machine generated solution! Like wise a human generated solution can be just as misleading. (Lack of wisdom). Again thank you for sharing your insight!

There has been several times when a weather front is heading right for the coast, and it splits in half. Times when it does the total opposite of the forecast, and sometimes when nothing happens at all. Predicting the future is pretending we are God, and He is the one that created, and controls the weather. Yes, weather is very interesting, and I am a fan of it, but let's not go overboard we trying to predict the future. Have a happy new year.

Mark, interesting but frightening! We'll be lucky if AI improves the forecast by five hours let alone five days. How'd they work for Covid! I understand differential equations and their limitations so all I can say is DON'T LEAVE KZbin!

AI in general makes me totally cringe. Seeing it in and on EVERYTHING does NOT make me happy at all. Used selectively and intelligently (thats human intelligence, thank you), I can see the utility, but I personally at this point in time have zero use for it sticking its nose in my life will-I, nil-I. Trust level, zip.
