No tones like Chinese. *Exactly similar (100%) to the sister language* : Bahasa Melayu in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and South Thailand etc. In Malaysia etc even ABCDE is pronounced exactly like the British English (not A, Ba, Che, De etc). Modern loan words are taken mostly from English, not Dutch, eg Universiti (not -TAS), revolusi, kulinari (not kuliner), automatik (not automatis) etc.

I'm Teochew nang from Thailand.Since I was young ,I often heard my mom speak Teochew to other people such as my relatives, but she never spoke and taught me (she always spoke thai with me). And that why my teochew is not so good but I am very happy to watch this video caused it recalled me the day when I was young (I am now 60 and gonna retired from my work.Nowadays in Thailand it is very hard to find some one who can speak Teochew fluently because those people who could speak fluently mostly passed away.

I LOVE them because they make me LAUGH a LOT! Guys, try to focus on something, instead of craving for admiration and being so dispersed.

I absolutely agree with you :) I think small bits of vocabulary then using this in active sentences is the way to go :) Using a starter sentence and using different options that are in the same class are a perfect teaching tool. "I am....working - playing - cleaning" and so on. This gives the beginning learner a sense of achievement and motivates them to continue :)

In Italy, the average level of English proficiency amongst the adult population is lower than most other European countries. Many older Italians cannot speak any English at all. Unlike France, however, there is no cultural aversion to English in Italy. So Italian locals who were born after 1980 will probably be able to speak English, at least to a decent standard. But making an effort to speak as much Italian as you can will always be appreciated.

I prefer Benny Lewis's approach of get in there and communicate. He has MY attitude. I'm in it to COMMUNICATE. I found my tutors would stop me and correct me, interrupting my flow. That's why I prefer a Language Exchange Partner like my Serbian Language Exchange Partner/now good friend, Zoran. He understood I just wanted to be able to chat with people. He did not correct my grammar. He simply stopped me when I became too incoherent and guided me back. Zoran and I eventually met up this year in Belgrade and it was like spending a day with an old friend. Grammar is great. I need it but I don't let it get in the way of communicating.

Excellent video!! It's really all about effective learning hours. There's a ton of data on this for learning a similar or close language, like an English speaker learning Spanish. ~75 total hours to reach A1, ~150 total hours to reach A2, ~300 hours total to reach B1, ~600-700 total hours to reach B2, and ~1400-1500 total hours to reach C1. It's kind of like a doubling effect for each subsequent level. That's where efficiency comes in -- if you're really good at languages (and or very efficient with your learning hours) you can maybe shave off up to 20-25% off these times and if you're less efficient than the average learning you would add 20-25% to these times. But in the end -- the amount of time it takes to get to a given level (with similar languages) is fairly well understood -- everyone's mileage will vary slightly -- however there is a ton of data on this. Yes, IMO Luca is right on the money -- it's a long road to get to C1 from B2 -- but it's a fun one. I agree with Luca when he says the hump is B2. IMO the best feeling is reaching B2 -- so motivating to reach B2.

Nice review. Tough it must be added that every assimil language course is different from each other includind the chosen vocabulary. It implies that some are better than others. The review of russian speaks a lot about the russian course but to be fair it would be imperative to review other languages in assimil as they are entirely distinct in their presentation.

Can we say something positive about this kid who has such a great interest in connecting with people that he learns their languages? It’s not just an academic practice for him. He is really using the languages, which is why some of them he can speak better than others. Because he may not be using the weaker languages as much. But, I’m sure if he travels to the place or spends a few days speaking with natives, it will come back to him.
