What do you mean "languages are sooo similar" 😂😂😂 Not so similar indeed You compare Brazilian Portuguese to European Portuguese? Seriously???

Russians can learn Ukrainian easily but what for? Even Ukrainian KZbin channels are mostly in Russian to gather larger audience. A lot of Ukrainian bloggers have their content in Russian. I do not know many Ukrainian writers that actually write in Ukrainian. So if I am to spend my time and invest energy into learning a new language I would rather study a more common language even if it would require more work.

Until recently we could say that, but from now on, a lot of Ukrainians won't want to speak Russian anymore, speaking to them in Ukrainian will make it easier for them, and a sign of respect for them as Ukrainians, not as 'no need to make the effort to learn their language, they speak Russian'.

@@AlinefromToulouse nonsense. I was just in Ukraine a few weeks ago. Every one spoke Russian to me.

@@milanhrvat of course, if you speak to them in Russian because you don't speak Ukrainian, they won't tell you 'shut up' I don't want to communicate with you because it is in Russian, Russians have to think about doing what I say themselves.

If you live in Ukraine as a foreigner long-term, knowing both would be advantageous. For example, I called the bank one time, they told me they couldn’t speak with me in Russian because the law doesn’t allow them to.

@@milanhrvat Where in Ukraine did you go ? In Lviv, people reply in Ukrainian if you address them in Russian 90% of the time. Elsewhere, like Kiev, it’d be Russian. And if you go to smaller towns, you’ll find people replying in local dialects !

You don’t study languages because it’s easy but because it has a practical use for you or you would gain access to a larger cultural segment. I could never understand people who study languages just to claim that they speak so many of them.

So I shouldn’t learn Swedish if I’m interested in Sweden and Swedish literature ?
@ianstrom4365

@@RovexHD but this is the "practical use" that I was talking about. You want to know more about this country and their culture and this is important for you and that’s why you study the language not because it’s "easy" for you.

@@ianstrom4365 I see I misread your post. Well I’d hope a polyglot learning polish would take some interest in polish culture.

Today, almost all Ukrainians are bilingual and a significant part speaks Russian. But the younger generation already prefers the Ukrainian language. In 25 years, many will speak only Ukrainian. As in Poland they only speak Polish. The role of Russia is falling (because of Putin's stupid and aggressive policy). With it, the influence of the Russian language also falls.
@RovexHD
@RovexHD 2 жыл бұрын
That might be true for Kiev, where you hear Ukrainian spoken more than 10 years ago, and young people are bilingual in both Russian and Ukrainian. Odessa is a different story. I didn’t hear a word of Ukrainian in my 3 weeks last year, young people learn Ukrainian only at school, but Russian is the preferred language for everyone there (and will be for a long time).

@@RovexHD Yes. I am from Kyiv. :) In Odessa, it will take a maximum of two generations. Putin helped a lot.

Hi, guys, don't waste your time trying to persuade Russians learn Ukrainian or vice versa! They understand both! Anything you say from your point of view has no sense. I wouldn't give a dime to support your 'imagination'
@ianstrom4365

Firstly, an ordinary Russian cannot understand Ukrainian because it still has differences. Secondly, they are not persuading anybody, they just compare the languages and it’s not their "imagination" if they have some knowledge of the languages. No need to be rude here about a "dime" it’s their channel and their content and they express their opinions.

Russians with little exposure to Ukrainian understand Ukrainian mainly contextually, really carrying a conversation is not always possible.

It is not controvertial but a most inappropriate topic to discuss given the current world affairs. There are people dying on both sides. It is a gift to keep idiocy a mystery and a disgrace to confirm it.
