I originally stumbled upon your channel after getting into shadowdark early this year. After inhaling all your shadowdark focused videos, I’ve stuck around because I really appreciate your measured opinions and perspective on all different types of material. Thanks for everything you’ve done in 2024 and I look forward to your vids in 2025!

Thank you for the review! I am thinking of getting this to run a Cairn sandbox campaign. Do you think it would work with Cairn? Im not worried about converting monsters, but for the fact that Cairn is levelless and classless.
@RedMageGM19 күн бұрын
The world and story seem like they would work with almost any system. I think Cairn would be great!

I love the color scheme, it’s just so wierd, it gives those vibes of pulp fantasy
@Im-Just-Here-Dont-Worry28 күн бұрын
PS: if you don’t know what pulp fantasy is, it was pre-Tolkien fantasy, it was much weirder and, dare I say, more fantastical, and I’m not saying bad things about Tolkien’s stuff never in my life would I commit such blasphemy, both have their own merits

For OSR games, I also made my own classes because I, personally, found the classes too barebones most of the time. My current OSR Heartbreaker I made has 11 classes, but they all add something different to the game. Knave 2e's tables helped immensely with my creation Bard--> Can use bardic music just like Minstrel from Dolmenwood. Has skills like Recall Rumors and Detecting Lies Binder--> A "magical" class where their magic is tied to a specific artifact. Abilities are generated from the Knave 2e Spells Brawlers--> Focus on fighting unarmed and can easily get multiple attacks. They have Martial Arts to differentiate with each other Cleric--> Can turn enemy, have orisons (magical skills), and they get a Domain. The Domain is like a word that the Player decides what it does while the GM adjudicates Fighter--> Different Martial Types which changes the gameplay of a fighter. Also They hit the hardest Mage--> Spells are Knave spells with cantrips (magical skills) and schools of magic which gives abilities and drawbacks. I am thinking of making a list of spells which are all problem-solving spells and making a damaging magic skill Merchant--> Sells things better. Gain more exp from Gold, but no exp from Philantophy or buying frivoluous items. Also have skills relating to commerce Rogue--> The thief, but they can be an assassin. Backstab. Get a talent like in Maze Rats. Thief skills Scholar--> Non-magical intelligence class. They can find information and they have Areas of Expertise which gives them a skill. Spook--> Got the idea from a YA novel I enjoyed as a kid. They can detect ghosts, be resistant to charms, hunt monsters, and can fast to resist effects better Warden--> Ranger like Aragorn

I'm here for rpg stuff. But this seems like fun. I've watched a couple reviews of clever "non-rpg" games that are, as you describe, "world building" games of one sort or other. Those also could be used yo build a world that you then have the same group of players make characters and adventure within. The only problem being, then there might not be much mystery fie the players to discover
@RedMageGMАй бұрын
Yeah, it definitely has it's upsides and downsides - the more collaborative the worldbuilding, the less surprise as you say. There does tend to be additional player buy-in though, at least for some types of players and that can be great!

@@RedMageGM well, the TOR2e system has travel rules, it isnt overpowered, also, it has a corruption system (which is realy good), and the setting fits entirely, since its about a dark lord overwhelming a chunk of land.

Into the Wyrd and Wild makes the most sense to add in after the Nag lord eally begins his rise to power in the forest. As he grows, newer and worse things can get added into the wandering encounter lists. This adds in a degree of "threat" that his presence brings in.
@RedMageGMАй бұрын
That's a great idea! Definitely adds that horror element as the forest becomes more and more tainted by chaos.

For the Stress Level (SL) from the Count, Castle, Curse book, have you managed to find a way to use the SL system idea but in a homebrewed idea? Currently working on a Stress system to mimic it and adapt it for Shadowdark, specifically a long-term resource (similar to your CON HP idea for strahd longer form campaign). Just curious if you've done anything with the SL idea at all.
@RedMageGMАй бұрын
I just used a pretty basic Stress system in my game. I detail that in the same session 0 video for my Strahd campaign.

Love the insect crown of roaches artifact/deity. I have an insect cult temple buried under my regional capital, temple of Coleoptra the many eyed goddess of swarming insects and decay. This could help flesh that out and empower the priestess. I like the idea that dying wizards may create some sort of magical manifestation. Really like the adventurer's almanac.

I used document protectors throughout my binder, to make shifting pages easier; I skimped on adding art for my own pleasure, but may rethink that. Then I will need a bigger binder. Thank you for ideas on content - I haven't printed off parts of books (though I think I have all/most of the ones you reference), instead going with a mix of downloads from blogs and such.

I just realized something. The name Vald probably means "forest" or "woods". I think it's Yiddish. That and German have a lot of similar words, and the word Wald in German means forest. It just dawned on me. I could look it up, but where's the fun in that?!
