I lived in Thailand for 5 years, contemplated visiting Vietnam but seemed visa was too complicated to get at the time. Tipping isn’t standard in taxis. Ubers yes. Taxis no. Maybe 10 or 20 pesos if they help with your bags. 10% is an appropriate tip in Mexico for a restaurant unless you are in a tourist area, then 15% is plenty. When we gringos come into another culture and overpay it makes things worse for the locals and your fellow tourists. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

I am considering stopping in Jakarta for a few days on my next major trip, but what worries me is that Jakarta would be the least safe Asian city I have ever visited. As I travel for taking photos of skyscrapers around the world, I always have heavy camera equipment with me that is worth more than the average annual salary in Jakarta. So even in places where tourists in general are quite safe, I might be the one to get chosen for a robbery. Even in Bangkok though, which already is less safe than Singapore or Tokyo, I never felt unsafe even at night. On the other hand there are places like the Manila metro that are infamous for armed robbery of foreign tourists. The numbers say that Jakarta is somewhere in between Bangkok and Manila when it comes to safety, which gives me mixed feelings. I wonder if the modern areas in central Jakarta with all those skyscrapers are more safe than the rest of the city as there are cameras and security present everywhere. Is it generally safe if many people are around? I often read the advice not to travel alone, but I am alone and can't order a travel companion on Amazon. My biggest nightmare would be losing my camera stuff during a trip and ending at a later stop like Paris with a camera. You were probably not robbed during your seven day trip, because otherwise you would mentioned it. Did you feel safe everywhere though - especially at night?
