Great video and explanation. Today I was walking by my boat in the driveway here in the north east. It's Dec 16, and it warmed up to about 40 degrees, and I noticed water dripping at a very aggressive rate. Like about 1 gallon per minute from my through through hull fitting. My first reaction was oh FU@# because there was none coming out the transom hole (not enough tilt) I am not sure how but there is clearly some kind of leak at the fitting. So I'm going to need to tear up the deck and see if I can figure it out. I am hoping it is not the through hull it's self, or the seal between the hull and the fitting but instead the fitting attached to it inside the hull. It's a line that feeds my livewell. It has a brass shutoff also. I am at a loss how this could happen because the drain is open so I don't know how water would collect. The boat is shrink wrapped, so I can do this out of the weather, but it's still pretty nasty time of the year for this kind of a job. I came here looking for a video to show how they are installed so I know what I'm working with. I appreciate this video and the details.

I think your decision to go with the 110HP is a good one! IMO, the Ranger Tugs are way over powered to start with, so a reduction in HP should reduce their Top Speed and still make for a very nice boat. Of course the other benefit is improved Fuel Economy! I think this is a Win-Win!

This is a fantastic project and I am enjoying the whole series! Hopefully the students will never forget their experience with this boat. I am a product of a Technical High School & Junior College majoring in the Automotive Field, but my career took a turn and I found myself in the Diesel Truck/Construction Equipment Industry, which I excelled in. My decision to go to a Technical School was the best move I ever made. Now after 56 years, I am still in touch with that school, even taught there for a year.

I am exited I found this Video, I find it very informative! Hopefully, there is a Ranger R25 is in my future, I am considering one of these boats. You asked for Project Comments, although they are unfortunately late. Note, my "Comments/Suggestions" are based on over 56 years of experience in the Diesel Truck/Construction Equipment Industries. During my career, I severed as a Mechanic, Diesel Instructor at a Tech High School, District Service Manager and Regional Sales Engineer for Africa/Europe/Middle East. I've included this info as a little "Back Ground," which should add to the weight of what them. I've Walked the Walk and Talked the Talk. I also have 10 + years as a boat owner, two which were Yanmar Diesels. We were alway strained the apply the the "4-C's" to a Failure/Repair. 1. Complaint: In this case, as I understand it, is evidence of water inside the engine. 2. Cause: Which was found to be Towing without the Water Inlet Valve being Shut off. 3. Correction: Here where I have the my biggest concerns! From what I understand the Engine was never completely DISASSEMBLED and INSPECTED to determine the full extent of the damage and Comprehensive Repair Estimate, never made. Without this Fundamental Step, everything down stream from it, is questionable, and can lead to the wrong assumptions and costly mistakes. 4. Collection: Generally the Customer is responsible to Pay the Bill. However, sometimes its an Insurance issue, sometimes its a Shop Come Back, sometimes a Parts/Vehicle Warranty etc. The switch from 150 HP to 50 HP maybe too much. Having said all this, hopefully the "Sea Trails" will produce good results! IMHO, the Rangers are too fast to start with, for my tastes. I look forward to the Auction!
@SVCSkallywags7 күн бұрын
Thanks for a very complete 4-c's. The engine was mostly taken apart, one of the injectors was completely rusted in - they couldn't pry it out at all. They had a bore scope in the cylinders and they all had evidence of salt water and corrosion. Because this model is no longer available (it's a BWM block) and sources parts was reported as very difficult, rebuilding didn't sound like a viable options.

Just a question, as you know the likely fail points, why not reinforce that area, to spread the load more , don’t see why you couldn’t have second plate welded over say a 3rd of the chain plate, little more wight. But not that much, there may be a reason that I don’t get, but would love to know
@SVCSkallywagsАй бұрын
Well, I'm not an engineer... However these chain plates are significantly larger than those on other similar sized rigs. They made it 30 years, which is very good. We feel that replacing with the same is a good fit.

I have a question, I’m a sailor and my plane is to come up the coast from Panama, planning my Canadian Alaska passage. can you sail the inside passage? Watched a number of videos and everyone is motoring? Like 400/500 miles?
@SVCSkallywagsАй бұрын
Yes, during a flotilla with goal:get you there quickly - not a lot of sailing. You can sail much more than we did. Afternoon winds are more favorable and we always leave early. However, with most of these passages prevailing winds are only favorable 50% of the time. Often most people don't wait for the winds to switch.

I agree - it hadn't been run in a VERY long time. Also, it sounds like it might have a 'miss'. We'll run it again, get it up to temp, and check injectors. We still don't have a boat to put it in, so hard to load it up and do proper testing!

Michael, your video is wonderful and educational. Loved it. I could use a little feedback from you. I am interested in getting a clamp meter. I am considering Fluke 375 vs 393. Would you have preferred 393 over 375 if you were buying another unit and have a boat?

Beautiful boat. May I make a suggestion: RIP OUT that unfinished and ugly plywood dashboard, PLEASE! With only a small effort you could create a decently sanded, varnished and properly finished backing for your new navigation system. What you have now looks like a few kids cut out some rough holes in a piece of leftover ply and shoved the chart plotters and gauges into it, all in a hurry too. Compare the terrible dash to the wonderful ceiling in the cabin and the carefully varnished hatch frames etc. Show the respect this vessel deserves.
