In small isolated incidents Maggie was able to be there for if Abby let her in. Abby was very cautious of her mother because she’s been burned way too many times by the disease. I get it though when you’ve had to fend for yourself against someone who couldn’t take care of you as a kid you shield yourself. It’s why Abby referred to her as Maggie a lot instead of mom.

Abby took an amazing chance despite her fears of a family illness. As Luka reassured her in “If not now” Chances were slim and crossing a street is a risk and if she let everything get to her she’d never have children. Luka was so loving to help her through her fears of their baby being bipolar. And of course Luka would be there for her. He knew Abby’s family history and still loved her and wanted her and proved it by marrying her and as you said being an amazing husband and father.

@@sadieyoung7397 Exactly! Luka's a wonderful man, and Abby's so lucky to have him. Btw, what Maggie said about taking a chance and leaping into life. The same thing can be said about Sam. Steve was never there for Alex, but Sam didn't care that Alex didn't have a dad. Luka was a real father to Alex & the closest thing he ever had to it. But Sam kept pushing guys away, because she was too independent and had major commitment issues. Aside from Steve's absence that's also why Alex didn't have a dad. If Sam had taken a chance she could've had the love & happiness that Abby found with Luka. She could've had a good man, a good husband, Alex could've had a real father, and having more kids wouldn't have been the end of the world. Sam deprived herself and Alex of happiness.

@@jadasims1914 Yep. Abby’s leap of faith and taking a chance paid off for her. She got a wonderful man who she always loved and he always loved her and a son they both love more than anything. Sam did have a lot of issues, I remember how Luka said him and Sam fought a lot and she did not like him having control over her life or her son. That’s why she was always fighting Luka. She also didn’t love him and Luka was just wanting to play daddy to Alex but he rejected his attempts which hurt Luka. Luka was searching for love and happiness and She didn’t want what Luka wanted. Love and a family . Sam accused Luka of not letting her in but truth is she never let him in either. Sam did sabotage herself and alex of some Happiness. She is way too neurotic and possessive of alex to let a guy in. Too bad for her. Alex suffered because his mother was too immature . Even with Tony seems like she loves to sabotage herself. Sam didn’t deserve Luka. She was always yelling at him and threw stuff at him. I was glad Luka’s real love came back into the picture.

You're right that Sam didn't love Luka, because she wasn't looking for anything serious/committed in the first place. In season 10 Alex wanted a dad. But in season 11 Steve always got Alex's hopes up about sticking around/the three of them being a family. So Alex told Luka we're friends, but I've got a dad and he's coming back. But I don't think Luka took it personally because he knew Steve was a sperm donor. Sam and Luka weren't a good match because they wanted different things. You're right that Luka may not have let Sam in, but she wasn't open with him either. She had a pregnancy scare and never told him. Sam always used Alex as an excuse to push guys away. Her choices are partly why Alex didn't have a dad, and she had no idea how that effected Alex. Imo Tony was a downgrade from Luka. He was cute but he had cocky confidence, no respect for authority, stubbornness, he was kind of immature, too laid back, and couldn't admit when he was wrong. Maybe Luka was too good for Sam, and she did overreact sometimes. I'm glad Luka & Abby ended up together. Abby isn't Luka's first, but she's his only love.

@@jadasims1914 Luka found out about sams little pregnancy scare because he found the pregnancy test kit and waited to see if she’d bring it up yet she didn’t so he did and it showed cased the flaws, lack of communication and Sam was right about one thing, they really didn’t know each other well and Sam asked Abby about Luka’s first family and she said she knew about it but knew not to press him on it unless he brought it up. Abby knew Luka for years and had a lot of history with him so of course she’d know Luka better. Sam really did sabotage herself with finding a good guy for her and Alex. Oh I know Abby isn’t Luka’s first but as you said she’s his only. I loved when he told Sam the news of him and Abby and when he told her about the pregnancy suddenly her jaw dropped and I laughed at that. Luka looked so uncomfortable when she hugged him saying congrats. Lol. Sam was just a temporary replacement before Abby would be in a better place to be with Luka. Once she became a resident, timing got right and Luka jumped on that quickly lol

Yeah Luka was harder to love in season 9 but when Kerry ordered him to do mandatory therapy. It came out why he was self destructing so badly. i always knew why. He was depressed. He told the therapist what was eating at him. The loss of his family then coming to America he felt he ruined a relationship with someone he really cared about (Abby) then he used drinking and sex with many poor choices of partners to cope with his pain then to boot he killed a patient and almost killed a medical student in a car crash.. I felt so bad for him. I knew he was hurting. Just like In hindsight he confessed to Abby he missed her and wished they were talking more again and admitted to her he made a lot of mistakes..

That was so hard to watch.

Abby’s emotional trauma from Maggie’s disease was made apparent from the start. Years of that trauma wouldn’t be resolved from one conversation. Luka saw how much her mother hurt her just by a couple visits. I also believe it’s why he had this overwhelming desire to protect her from everything harmful that came near her. Luka really was the greatest thing that happened to her. To give her everything she needed in her life, to feel safe to have that stability and love then their son.
