What I do when breaking in boots is put a hair dryer down the shaft and warm the boot up then I will open it up and condition the inside of the boot heat it up again until it is nice and warm then condition it again I will do this 3 or 4 times from the inside it makes the boot super supple with out changing the color to much

Every time I need to break in a new pair of boots I carry moleskin padding with me. When you start to feel rubbing somewhere such as by the eyelets like that you stick a layer of padding down on your foot in the exact spot that was rubbing. Completely takes away the discomfort. Then for the next work week I stick padding on my foot on that spot while its still breaking in, no sense in waiting for it to start rubbing first each day and its easier to put it on beforehand anyways.

I just don't think these are meant for work. They seem to be for the casual wearer who wants the PNW look. Which is me. I've held off on ordering JKs or Whites since I discovered them a few years ago. I've been waiting for these. A little disappointed in some of the details, and these are the small batch artisan Black Labels?!?

@TheRealLOLExpress6 күн бұрын
Nice! I was gonna pull the trigger on those. But I already have the drifters, and my nicks coming lol. Oh, yeah! If you’re looking for a functional boot, imo. You’re even better off going with their normal ranger, or razorback than the challenger. My opinion on them has completely changed after trying other boots. Thursday just used high quality materials. It’s more of a show/casual boot, than they are a work boot.
@Highland_Paddy6 күн бұрын
They sent me a defective pair, so most of my complaints about the AVERAGE?? one would be that the roughout shaft is pointless unless you are wearing shorts or tuck in your pants or something AND I still could neigh give a proper assessment regarding proper fitting based upon what all happened there. I really don't prefer the roughout toes, either, overall.
@Highland_Paddy6 күн бұрын
You'll also see where the sidewalls of the "Challenger" don't quite meet up the insole or something. Hasn't been an issue yet, but I've only worn them for maybe about 8 hrs so far or something and then switching back t' Carolina "loggers" is almost like sneakers comparatively the weight and such, which is mostly the outsole and heel stack.
@Highland_Paddy6 күн бұрын
I think Drew's is more #4 toe than #3, which I prefer. I just remember it seeming HUGE for the size of my foot, but ne'er got the 2nd one on for proper walk on the rug.

The challenger isn’t a true pnw boot. It’s a boot that gives that vibe but they wanted regular wearers to be able to wear it. A regular shoe wearer would HATE wearing pnw boots because of the drop in the sole.
@TheRealLOLExpress6 күн бұрын
Yeah, that’s why I always used quotation marks whenever referring it as a “PNW” Boot. It is, however, a good entry point to PNW Boots though..

I purchased black and brown challenger and I did really like em! Quality is top tier . All my purchases from Thursday since 2020 were 5 star ⭐️ never regretted. Recommend
@TheRealLOLExpress7 күн бұрын
Materials used are REALLY high quality for the price. I love the other Thursday boots, and I REALLY wanted to love these. But those issues just made it useless for me for a work boot. If Thursday is gonna go back to the drawing board for these. I’d say reprofile the heel to be flatter, fix those holes in the tongue, and make sure QC is doing a better job. Lots of people are having to send their boots back due to just regular QC issues.
@AlejandroBarrera-gf1zn7 күн бұрын

I just received my black and brown challenger, mine has the same issue like yours. Also the leather has dark spots . Thank you .
@TheRealLOLExpress7 күн бұрын
Yeah, Not sure which you’re referring to.. If it’s the stitching, there seems to be a lot of QC issues on these. I’m almost wondering if they just had to rush them out… 🤔 If it’s the heel/foot slide issue, that’s definitely a last issue that NEEDS to be fixed if they’re wanting these to be a functional boot.

Yeah, the 1776 last on their “logger” boot is better. But not by much.. They’re also missing arch support in the mid-section.
@doublebase65099 күн бұрын
I own two pairs of these, they’re fantastic work boots. That arch support will make your heel sort of fall into place, while pushing up on your arch, taking a lot of pressure off your toe joints and heel. And they’re extremely well constructed. The leather thickness on these are probably close to a whole millimeter thicker than the Thursday Challenger. I had a tough time breaking the Drew’s in but once you’re there, you’re going to love them. Unreal value. Awesome looking boots you’ve got there!
@TheRealLOLExpress9 күн бұрын
Nice! That’s awesome! I am so glad I decided to get these! I wore them around the house for the rest of yesterday, and it felt like I was walking on clouds, in comparison to my Iron Rangers and the Challengers lol. They really are an unreal value though! I like that they put the fire&ice sole on these. Cause I was slipping on some terrain in the challengers. Thank you for your comment!
@doublebase65099 күн бұрын
Interesting boots, I did notice the lack of an arch compared to a logger boot, but I figured…hey, these aren’t really “logger” boots per say. They’re a lot of boot for the price, but almost more a dress logger like the urban logger from nicks or the contractor from Drew’s. So I’m fine with that. But if I’m looking for a logger in that proce range, I go Drew’s. And I have. But nice boots for sure! I’d probably personally stick to Thursday Captain boots for more a dress boot look, but I like that Thursday has added a different segment.
@TheRealLOLExpress9 күн бұрын
I think it’s a combination of their last, and lack of arch support compared to a logger.
@davidcallan78449 күн бұрын
Seems to me they didn’t put enough arch in to compensate for the heel to toe drop, it looks like a logger but it’s not. People forget that the high heel in logger boots is for ascending steep inclines , just like a dogger heel was originally designed to lock into a stirrup , Thursday is fashion over function . The Iron Ranger has no midsole which makes the break in very uncomfortable.
@TheRealLOLExpress9 күн бұрын
Yeah, I believe they used a weird last. But also forgot to put in an arch-support to make the heel a little more flat.

I don't like Thursday boots at all. I purchased three pairs and had to return them all due to sizing inconsistencies. I was expecting better with this challenger boot but, that last looks uncomfortable and that heel looks comical. Thank you for your review brother.
@TheRealLOLExpress9 күн бұрын
I like the idea of what Thursday is trying to accomplish. But I was also expecting better with this boot. I will keep mine, and just run it to a cobbler at some point to reprofile the heel.

I would try some new heels. It should not be much for a cobbler to put some less thick heel cap on. I have the same problem with mine. My stitching is spot on, no defects at all. I know what your saying about another expensive pair of boots that don't fit right. I have a pair of Rancourt boots from Maine that don't fit right and I am stuck with a boot that is too painful to wear for more than an hour. It' was worst then my Iron Rangers that took forever to brake in. I do love the CF Stead leather on the boots.
@TheRealLOLExpress10 күн бұрын
Yeah, I was thinking on bringing them to a cobbler to essentially rebuild the heel, and see how that goes. Sucks spending that much on a boot, and then it’s (almost) unwearable.
@billystpaul890710 күн бұрын
Mine did too. I had to buy other ones. It's a tight double EE width. I also agree with the back heel. I slope forward as well. The back heel should of been shorter. And, good luck with customer service. Thursday is becoming just another boot company that has gotten bigger. I might get new heels in the boot. Don't want to have another pair of expensive boots I can't use.
@TheRealLOLExpress9 күн бұрын
Yeah, I’ll probably do the same! I want to have a cobbler reprofile the heel. However, Thursday has been good for customer service on me.
@TheWilderness33310 күн бұрын
Great video. I'm a little lost though. What't the effect in wearing the Challenger with the different heel stack? Is your foot sliding to the bottom front or something? I checked out pics of some JK and Drew's boots and they look pretty much the same.
@TheRealLOLExpress10 күн бұрын
Essentially, that’s my issue. My feet slide forward, and the angle makes my weight shift to the balls of my feet. So, the leather stack is sanded down at a steep angle on the challengers. The nicks and Drew’s boots are a noticeably less steep angle. Also, Drew’s and nicks boots use a leather arch support under the insole, but above the midsole. Which I think is what is missing in the challenger boot to make it less steep of an angle in the heel.

I had t' go half size UP from Brannock [as w' most Thirsty models] and then still put in insert t' lessen slip and add some toe comfort.
@Highland_Paddy10 күн бұрын
I don't know that most of the leather upgrades were more work-friendly leather options, tho. Spend more t' get less functional thing overall. Most people who plan to work in them should get the rugged brown ones that cost less [Grand Canyon?]. They are still thin compared to real PNW and don't really need the cap toe, and only 6" option is meh, etc.
@Highland_Paddy10 күн бұрын
The wax will be ok if ye worried about wet weather a bit, although I don't know how long 'til rubs off but then boot should be able to take abrasion, but any Thursday neigh really MEANT for demanding work, anyway. Most the people who buy the Challenger or Thunder is using them for casual try t' look like hipster lumberjack, anyway.
@Highland_Paddy10 күн бұрын
Yeah, the stitch is different than Builder Pro [I don't have Urban Logger], but the overall construction is different, too. They are also almost half the price of typical PNW, tho.
@Highland_Paddy10 күн бұрын
Ye just want the taller heel but don't need the arch support? Can get logger heel boots for half the price these Thirsty ones from AMZN brands, etc.
@Highland_Paddy10 күн бұрын
I got two pairs and don't seem to have any "breathe holes", so maybe ye blew stitch or they were a rush job got overlooked? Can likely get gusset fixed by shoe guy? I can't imagine the Rugged Resilient versions require any condition. I don't see much advantage to the tall heel if no extra arch support, but these heels are even higher than the Nick's stacks for some reason. I have other boots I would like to ADD the arch, but the PNW will likely only work on THEIR boots and thing seems t' be the common line and the regular shoe guys neigh equipped for stitch-down or extra work or whate'er, so these seemed like an OK compromise option since didn't hafta wait 4 months or whatever. I don't care for the fit as much, like ye said, is hafta cinch them a lot t' compensate for bulbous toe-box, but poron insoles helped cushion the leather toe part whilst I'm still breaking in [however long THAT might take since I only wear them for about an hour or two because they're just still so heavy and clunky compared t' some others what I don't find so tedious t' wear overall].
@Highland_Paddy10 күн бұрын
Yes, the leather also much thinner than the true work leathers. This may not matter depending on the type o' work...
@Highland_Paddy10 күн бұрын
I don't know why they didn't rename the old logger the Challenger or something and then title these or the new Thunder ones the Logger instead. The old Logger is really just a taller shaft of the Hero.

Ye could just put regular boot laces in them. These are only 6", so most sneaker laces would work just as well in the meantime.

@Highland_Paddy10 күн бұрын
Did not like that Rose Anvil Drifter last at all. Might have that pair rebuilt actually so my toes have somewhere to go other than being smashed on the side. They have a really wide outsole still somehow. If ye ordered the Nick's Quick Ship might come pretty soon; otherwise about 4 months. White's should really start cutting the uppers and things BEFORE the launch so they can get them out more quickly when they know they will be slammed, but I won't promise before Thanksgiving because I don't know how their other production schedule looks or whatever. I got mine just before X-mas I think?

you hate break in, I had suggest, When I break in with brand new a pair boots, I oiling my boots with almond and lanolin, maybe around 70:30. mixed them without beast wax. Oiling your boots and leave it about 1 or 2 days. The leather will absorb deeply and make it being soft. Polishing with leather polish before wearing it....and ready to go sorry about my broken english, I hope you get it
@TheRealLOLExpress11 күн бұрын
I actually had just done this with my iron rangers, and just did it before my new video on the challengers. It helps SOOO much to condition the boot, and leave it for 2-3days. Made both of the boots a completely new boot!
@noone373412 күн бұрын
Wow, I would call that a fake bellows tongue, and yeah, that last isn't right. I think it's a shame that a company like Thursday wastes good material making bad boots. If everyone was like me, Thursday would be out of business. Thanks for the review. Looking forward to your drifter videos
@TheRealLOLExpress12 күн бұрын
Yeah, I was a bit disheartened when I found the tongue out. Also, the last disappointments me. But it’s still a good boot, once broken in. Same with their regular logger boot. Except, on those the heel stack isn’t as tall, so the sliding effect is non-existent. I’d buy the boot again just because of the price point, and comfort. The comfort and looks far outweighed the negatives for me. I like them more than my iron rangers. However, I will be doing a logger style resole for my Iron Rangers once I wear this sole out. I can’t wait for the drifters! I believe I got within the first 250. If so, then that unboxing will happen (potentially) this month.
@alphaa1xgene13 күн бұрын
Hey, I had commented on your last video. I got mine and they are tight at the toe box, widthwise. Do you think they will loosen up? And I still feel like they aren’t broken in they are stiff at the heel, and I feel the sliding forward effect you mentioned. I was looking into an exchange but the international charge isn’t worth it, and it’ll take about 45 days total.
@TheRealLOLExpress13 күн бұрын
Mine loosened up a tiny bit. From what I noticed, boots only loosen up about 1-2mm. But they were already pretty good width wise for me. Yeah, they’re pretty stiff leather. I’d recommend cleaning, conditioning, and letting them sit for 48 hours, and then come back to them. That’s what I did at about 5-6 days of wear. And it changed the boot for me! The sliding still happened a tiny bit, but I was able to mitigate that by tying them a little tighter. EDIT: Also, when you do clean and condition, if you decide to do so. Clean and Condition the insole too, helped me a lot in my iron ranger break-in.

Look at the 55 last for example, flat under heel, slanted in the waist, slightly sprung in the toe. That’s what a pnw should look like
@Coleone13916 күн бұрын
Most people complaining about bad/long break ins are dealing with a sizing issue. Get your brannock again, get sized correctly. Also those Thursdays.. your whole foot is titled forward in it, it’s shaped like a slide 🛝 from the heel forward. Boots should be flat under-heel, not canted forward
@TheRealLOLExpress15 күн бұрын
They are slightly slanted forward in the heel, but not so much so that my weight was on the ball of my feet. At least that was the way it was for me. I just had to tighten the boots a little. Edit: As far as the break-in, it’a really not that bad.. Have about 100+ hours in them, and they probably broke in within the first 75 hours.

Hey, thanks for the video. Did you get the same size as your red wings? I have iron rangers that are a perfect fit, and the captains at the same size are a bit to narrow, at least the regular D version - pairs half a size up or the wide ones are okay, but the Iron Ranger is still the best match.
@TheRealLOLExpress21 күн бұрын
I went half a size up from my iron rangers. And there’s about a quarter of an inch from my toe to the end of the boot. And when they were brand new, my big toe and little toe were touching the edges of the toe box of the boot just ever so slightly. Hope that helps!
