For overhead pressing I put the corner of the handle and the horn in the web between my thumb and pointer finger, and keep my fingers pointed straight up, with a neutral wrist. There's no need to close the hand. In fact with an open hand the KB tends to naturally rotate its way into a very comfortable position. That's for my anatomy, anyway. I keep a couple of KBs in my truck and get a workout during a break at work, or on my way home by the beach or a river or on a forest trail. I have a 16 hour day once a week and on these days I do a light KB workout on the sidewalk in Manhattan. They're great implements.

You're spreading misinformation: 5 is not a perfect number! A perfect number is defined as a positive integer that is the sum of its proper divisors. All perfect numbers are even and the smallest perfect number is 6: the sum of 1 + 2 + 3.

It's so cool that you're always learning new things. A quick tip is that you're holding the KB like a dumbell, but it's a lot more comfortable if you let the L of the kettlebell sit in the L of your hand, you should be able to open your fingers and not have the kettlebell fall because of this. This will help you to keep your wrists straight. (Your wrists are bending back a little bit.) Long story short, you don't hold the kettlebell like a dumbel or barbell, the KB has its own grip which will make holding it a lot more comfortable.

my right arm is generally a little bit stronger than my left, but when i do presses with my left it just shoots up and feels fluid, with my right it feels grindy and i get the feeling something bad is happening inside my shoulder even on the first reps of a weight i can do 10-15 reps with. think i'll just focus on bench and get back to it once i can do competent wall angels

It would be interesting to see how you classify the Z-press. Theoretically, it requires the same overhead mobility as the Soto press and also puts a lot of strain on the core.

Important hint for people not used to kettlebells: in my commercial gym I often see people trying out KB overhead presses and getting frustrated, because they try to grip them like DBs. This will put a lot of stress on your wrist. Hold KBs with a 45 degree angle between wrist and handle - not parallel! Your thumb should stick to the upper corner of the handle with the KB making gentle contact with your forearm the whole time. This should allow your wrist to stay more or less straight through the range of motion
@GutsBatmanКүн бұрын
I have experienced said frustration. I was gifted a few KBs years ago for christmas but I rarely use them, with the primary reason being wrist discomfort. I do a ton of pressing, both bench and overhead and have occasionally get that shoulder tendonitis and such. Will definitely give it more thought. Good work on the description.

Do you have any favorite KB programs? I only have access to KBs at the moment. Tried "Dry Fighting Weight", but didn't like it because of its low rep start.
@joshuaracey6783Күн бұрын
@@AB0BA_69 I would recommend the Armour Building Formula by Dan John. It has high rep press ladders and extremely high squat volumes. The book also comes with a Barbell version of the programme.

Alan using kettlebells? Rip and the SS cult will be coming for him. One thing to note though is the wrist being bent back on those presses. You should arm wrestle the bell to keep the wrist straight or slightly bent against the weight.

My shoulders cannot handle kettlebells but I can OHP extremely heavy without issues. OHP 175lbs without issues, shoulder wants to dislocate with 10 lb kettlebell. Be careful.

For some reason when I started kettlebells, doing single presses bothered me. I somehow ended up doing double kettlebell presses for a while and now I don't have issues at all. Don't know what it was, maybe it just worked a muscle I was weak with and never knew it.

Great job, Alan. You didn’t mention a good weight of the kettlebells to start with. I have a pair of 8 kilos. What’s the ideal weight increase?12?16?20?24? I am not sure I am gonna invest too much money on pairs of kettlebells.
@jmcantila9104Күн бұрын
Male lifters typically start at 16kg. Find a weight you can press for a challenging set of 8 if you can only get one. Ideally, you should also have different weights because the weight you use for Press/Snatch/Swing will vary. One kb each of 16kg/ 24kg/28kg should cover everything if you're decently fit, if not, a 12kg and a 16kg will do
@GutsBatmanКүн бұрын
Yes, he actually did mention a good weight to of the kettle bells to start with. He said 4 to 8 reps per arm per set. The number of reps determines the weight. Weight (aka intensity) that can be handled is best described by stating a rep range, not the actual weight to be used. Weight ranges vary far greater than reps per set do when talking broadly. You'll just have to do the work to find out what your 8 rep set is.
