I’m eventually going to post a vlog about my day trip to Carrickfergus, Ireland. Even though Carrickfergus Castle is probably the most well-known and visited tourist attraction there, the “Andrew Jackson Cottage” was actually my favorite part 🇮🇪😊🇺🇸

It’s true! 😊 Mount Athos has been a male-only monastic community for over a thousand years. The ban on women is known as the “avaton.” It’s part of their tradition to help the monks focus on their spiritual practices 🙏🏼❤️✝️

One of the murals on the West Belfast Solidarity Wall references the Falls Curfew (or Battle of the Falls) of 1970. From July 3-5, the British Army conducted an operation in the Falls district, initially searching for weapons. After clashes with local youths who threw stones and petrol bombs, the situation escalated into gun battles with the IRA. After four hours of fighting, the British Army sealed off 3,000 homes and imposed a 34-hour curfew. The operation resulted in 4 civilian deaths, 78 injuries, and 337 arrests, while large quantities of weapons were seized. The curfew intensified tensions and support for the IRA during The Troubles.

This song! 😍 The lyric “They sold out the struggle” refers to the criticism that political leaders, particularly during the peace process in Northern Ireland, compromised key principles for the sake of political gain or to reach a settlement. In the case of the Good Friday Agreement (1998), some felt that the concessions made, especially by leaders of both nationalist and unionist communities, compromised the broader goals of justice and political sovereignty in order to secure peace 🕊️🇮🇪🙏🏼

In 1911, after Harland and Wolff completed Titanic’s construction, it was handed over to the White Star Line, which assumed responsibility for its operations. Following the ship’s tragic sinking in 1912, no one was held legally liable, as investigations concluded that Titanic met the safety standards of the time ⚓️ This pivotal moment in history is powerfully captured at the Titanic Museum in Belfast 🇮🇪

There was no such thing as Bulgaria before 18 century lol But i dare you to prove me wrong. Who ruled that bulgaria? Show me his grave and body pls?
@WayfaringLibertarian28 күн бұрын
Bulgaria has a well-documented history that dates back much earlier than the 18th century. The First Bulgarian Empire was established in 681 AD and played a significant role in the history of Southeastern Europe. Notable rulers like Khan Asparuh (its founder) and Tsar Simeon the Great (during the Golden Age of Bulgaria) left a strong legacy. While graves of ancient rulers can be difficult to verify due to the passage of time, historical evidence - like treaties, coins, and accounts from Byzantine historians - attests to Bulgaria’s existence long before the 18th century. 🤷🏼♀️

@@WayfaringLibertarian Yeah yeah spare me the Vatican lies. How come everyone has their kings burial places, but they don't? I can show you all of ours kings graves and bodies! why do they keep our king Milutin in their church? And kiss his feet! Because they don't have their own. If you can't show me graves then...........I''m right. I also have more proof that they are nation created artificially

There’s a popular piece of folklore associated with the castle that claims its kitchen collapsed into the sea during a violent storm in the 17th century, 🌊 taking the cooks and servants with it. According to the tale, only a single kitchen boy survived, saved because he was sitting in the corner of the room that remained intact. However, paintings from the 19th century depict the kitchen still standing, suggesting this dramatic story is more myth than fact. Even so, it adds to the rich tapestry of legends surrounding Dunluce Castle. 🏰🇮🇪💛

Fun fact: During World War II, St. George’s Market was temporarily used as a mortuary following the Belfast Blitz. Its sturdy structure made it one of the few buildings that could accommodate such a tragic need during those dark times.

"Our day will come" in Irish is "Tiocfaidh ár lá" (pronounced like "chuck-ee are law"). This phrase has deep historical significance and is often associated with the Irish republican movement as a symbol of hope and resilience during the struggle for independence and civil rights.
@WayfaringLibertarianАй бұрын
As someone who is not a proponent of violence, I have quite an aversion to the lyric "Whether your hand is on the ballot box or your hand is on the gun..." That said, it highlights an interesting historical aspect of the Irish republican movement, which once declared they had "an Armalite in one hand and a ballot box in the other." Fortunately, the movement has since shifted toward exclusively political means to pursue their goals -- a change that has been vital for peace and progress in Ireland. ❤️🇮🇪

Hilden Mill in Lisburn -- once the largest linen thread mill in the world -- is a remarkable piece of industrial history with a storied past. Founded in 1823 by the Barbour family, the mill played a key role in Northern Ireland's globally renowned linen industry. 🧵At its peak, it employed thousands of workers and exported its high-quality thread worldwide. Though the mill ceased operations in 2006, its historic significance remains. However, its legacy has faced challenges in recent years due to a series of fires 🔥 that have damaged parts of the structure. These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the need to preserve and protect historic landmarks like Hilden Mill. 🕰 It’s fascinating (and a bit tragic) to think about how this once-thriving hub of innovation and labor has faced such turmoil in its later years.

Derry Girls is such a cute show. Thank you for the tour of Londonderry Ireland.
@WayfaringLibertarianАй бұрын
Thank you for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed it and love Derry Girls too! I’ll give you a pass on the use of “Londonderry” though. Haha. The name “Derry” comes from the Irish word “Doire,” meaning oak grove. The addition of “London” came about after the 17th-century Siege of Derry and the involvement of the London guilds in colonizing the area. Many people in the city and across Ireland find the use of “Londonderry” contentious, as it can be seen as a reminder of colonialism and the struggles associated with that period. Locally, it’s most commonly referred to as Derry, so I try to use that name in respect of the city’s identity and history. ❤️🇮🇪
