I've had both of these lenses for many years and enjoy the 18-55 for travel/personal work and the 16-55 for paid work. But I'm now tempted to buy the 16-55 mk2 version for its lighter weight and smaller size. The 18-55 punches well above its weight and is the best kit lens I've ever owned.

Is the debate now solved by the XF16-55mmF2.8 R LM WR II ?

Hi Matthew! Nice explanation about your system change! For a professional photographer, the decision certainly makes sense from an efficiency point of view. But why not switch to the new Z6 III right away? Since Fujifilm fulfils my requirements, I'm sticking with it. Good luck and always the right light! 🎉

I have the 70-300mm with the X-H2. I can say it is sharp up to about 250mm. Not so sharp at 300mm. For wildlife, that is a fatal flaw. I also have the 1.4TC, and I can recover some of the loss in sharpness by shooting at 250mm with the 1.4TC. Unfortunately, the 70-300 reaches f5.6 well below 250mm, so I end up with 350mm f8 imaging. Not very compelling for wildlife work. Coming from Olympus and Lumix systems, I can say this is far short of both of their capabilities. I equate it to my experience with the Nikon Z7II and the 100-400mm S Nikon lens. Great images, but no where near enough reach for wildlife. I have ordered the 100-400mm and I am hoping it preforms well with the 1.4TC.

I just ordered a used 100-400mm. I like the extended focal range, and it's a red badge lens.

Don't scratch the metaphor too much. it will bleed and leave a scar. Having used a full stable of carefully selected Nikkor glass via a Fringer, and explorations with the Tamron 18-300, this is now my stock choice. See, I lived and shot through the bad old days of OEM and third party zooms in the 70s. None at any price point could really hold a candle to even some of the kit zooms of today. Tech has changed, and pixel peepers with their IQ charts really need to get real. This is a great lens for many purposes. Want macro? get a set of Vello rings. Want more tele? Zoom and crop from RAW. Buy it.

I got got a z6 III. So lets say I end up somewhere there isn't cell service, would a laser be good enough or just eyeball Polaris with a scope?

Had the 100to400 twice a s sold. Got the 70to30p and found the images better than 100to400 when focused at infinity. 100to400 foliage looks mushy at infinity. Keeping the 70to300. Plus the size. I love the images coming out of 70to300. For 100to400 only if focused within 10m or less

18-135 or 16-80? 16-80 covers you in traveling? 18-135 is the image quality compromise so big for an amateur?

I use the 16-80 F4 on my XH-1, and the Viltrox 13 / F1,4 on the other Body. I also own the XF 55-200, which is razorsharp, and i was using the worse 10-24 F4, but sold it for another lens. The versatile 16-80 was my best lens buy ever!

Just an opinion here... But I can't see the point of taking a camera out at night to take pictures that very few will be bothered about. Let's see...., a nice sunny day, or a cold cloudy night..?

I had the x h1, (my second fujicam after the x t1) xf 55-200 aaand the reddot badass xf 16--55. The best combo I've ever had, especially the 16-55. Sharpness and colours are incredible. Until about one month ago where it was stolen, (my eyes are still red). Now I have bought the x t3 and the xf 70-300 with no regrets so far. I also have the xf 18-55 and 18-135. They are great too and still in use, and I don't care if the camera is good for filming or not. I chose the x h1 for the resolution and backscreen primarily. I still struggle with getting convinced that the 16-80 is an ok replacement for the 16-55. Matthew, you mentioned the pro's that could make me try the cheaper one, but the sharpness of the beast.....!! Wow. Now I use the 18-55 for a while, and then I will find out. I hoped, that the mk II would have the ois, but no.....The weight is ok, but I would rather have the weight of the first version with ois, than the other way around.

Hey mate, my two cents. The Viltrox is 13mm and the Nikon is 20mm. The field of view is the same due to the crop factor and that’s where it ends I.e. The Viltrox is not a 20mm lens. The Nikon should resolve more details in this comparison. A better comparison would be the XF18 or 23 vs the Nikon 20mm. All the best

I've always used the 70-300mm for photos when hiking through forests and fields. But the deer were simply too far away (in Switzerland), which is why I bought the 150-600m. At first I was rather disappointed with the lens and wanted to send it in for repair. Fujifilm's "AfterSales" to walk around with a tripod. The 150-600mm is heavy and conspicuous compared to the 70-300mm. Then I took pictures with both lenses at 300mm each. I realised that the 150-600mm needs significantly more light. There's a trick for this: you can set the exposure compensation (on the outside right of the X-T5) to -1 to -1.5 so that the exposure time is reduced and the photo is sharper. I noticed that the 150-600mm, in contrast to the 70-150mm, produces less aberrations (colour fringing - actually none at all). Some of the details were also sharper (the cats' whiskers). The only disadvantage is that the 150-600mm is much less handy. There is also a trick for this: the lens comes with a strap that I put around my left armpit and carry the lens on my right arm, even with the camera strapped on.

I'd prefer bigger IF I was sitting in a blind with the camera on a tripod. Since that's not my style the smaller lens is more practical. If I do decide to increase 'blind time' I'll add a 1.4x multiplier to my kit.

What I don't get is everyone goes on about soft in the corners, all lenses are softer in the corners to varying degrees. Also if you are looking in the corner of the photo, then the image isn't that compelling.
