You know it's hard for me to criticize a company that chases its profit margin. Profit is a needed ill. 1. New buildings need built 2. New product needs to be researched and designed 3. Old buildings need refit, repurposed, reused etc However, when profit is in the billions of dollars or even 100 of millions of dollars that means the company is simply chasing another $$ to put in its pocket. If / when JD closes the Iowa plants do you even believe that the price of items now to be made in Mexico will drop by the $$ in cost of the labor? My neighbor only buys older John Deere equipment from the mid 90s and older. I have helped him maintain it and it is simple and robust. No computers anywhere. All of the diesels have manual racks with lots of aftermarket parts support. If JD keeps it up they will become irrelevant. BTW, Caterpillar is the same way.
