I ran into this situation in the 1970s when I bought a Volkswagen Scirocco. I was accustomed to doing a lot of simple maintenance and tune-ups myself, rather than pay a dealer to do it. I found that to access the timing mark I needed a special tool. I went to the VW dealer and tried to purchase the tool, but was told that it was proprietary, and was only available to VW authorized repair shops! I have friends who are farmers (serious farmers, not hobby farmers) and I know about the necessity for being able to fix things NOW instead of having to take it to a dealer! I am 100% behind the farmers!

After I heard about this we dumped every green machine we had on the farm except for an old baler which we rebuilt a few seasons ago. We bought older Case and Massey units, downsized our operation just a bit but we proved you sure as hell don’t need gps and cranky electronics.
@pschmidtke6 күн бұрын
Just like cellphone manufacturers, Deere is trying to make sure that you will never actually own anything you buy because everything is proprietary and even though you think you own it, you can't fix anything unless Deere does it. Right to repair is a must!!!

I am glad that's true for you but some parts of the USA its not. Some area's only have one farm equipment dealer close by. Other dealers will be hours away.
@joewoodchuck38244 күн бұрын
@Khalifrio I'm in a rather small city with some agriculture around. Other areas of the country have much more ag than here, so it surprises me that the dealerships are that low in quantity. It's counterintuitive, but it is what it is. I wonder if there are fewer land owners in your area with larger holdings than here. That's just a wild guess.

The fewer computers the better, fix up your old equipment and keep it. There's a lot to be said for the Amish way of doing things. To hell with all the corporate greed! So in the end it's cheaper to keep her! We need to go back to smaller farms and smaller equipment that's easier to fix or feed it hay instead of fuel.

Yes Farmers should have the right to be able to repair their own equipment without the manufacturer of that equipment sticking their nose and Farmers business wanting more money. I'm not a farmer but I believe in the American Farmer, without them America would be hard pressed to survive!!!

Reminds me of IBM and personal computers in the early to mid 80's. They tried to screw their customers with royalties for proprietary technology. The result was the cheaper competitors developed their own specs and made it open source 😊to anyone. Customers migrated to the competitor and IBM which had 80% of the market at one point ended up with none. Those who don't learn from history get to repeat it.

This could have easily been handled by making John Deere solely liable for any and all crop losses by equipment failure. Large scale outages or recalls could also be worthy of investigation for futures manipulation. That kind of risk and responsibility would make the MBA dude-bros at John Deere collectively squeal like pigs.

I haven’t had any issues with my tractor ever breaking down. I am a small farmer that just sells organic eggs. I do not own large tractors or implements that the big time farmers use. However what is currently going on is not fair to these farmers. I am hoping that the CEO changes his mind and takes these farmers seriously. If not John Deere could be in for some financial Hard Times. Hoping John Deere does what’s right and supports the farmers that feed you Billions of Dollars each and every year. If not surely John Deere will be the looser and there completion could Run Them Over. Watch out for those large tractor tires John Deere. John Deere put computer sensors on everything on their tractors. If something minor occurs the computer makes the tractor inoperable until the problem is fixed and the computer is reset. The problem is, only a John Deere service person can reset the computer. So even if the farmer fixes the minor problem, he can't use his tractor until the computer is reset. If the tractors simply had a way to reset the computer using the tractor's monitor and keyboard, farmers wouldn't need to wait for, and pay, a John Deere service person to do it.

One man at the top that doesn't understand the beginnings of John Deere 100 years ago comes up with a great idea to squeeze the very people that had loyalty to it for the sake of the value of it's stock. Four years ago I purchased a new 2032 because I sold my 4115 that never failed to my son. Knowing what I know now, I would not buy John Deere. Sadly I am disappointed. I purchased my first John Deere because dad told me to. He understood the faith that Deere had during the depression and lent farmers money to purchase their equipment. The CEO, the man at the top should read a bit about the history of this once great company loyal to the people it served with great equipment.

I know for a fact they sold faulty lawnmowers that were catching fire and not honoring warranties.3 of the same model riding mowers burnt to the ground in our area and all 3 got the run around from both the seller of the mower and John deere themself. The seller stated it was a John deere warranty issue and John deere would argue that it was the warranty of the seller to repair or replace the unit. I wouldn't buy a John deere broom if they made them and honestly would like to see them go belly up and Case and New Holland take their place.

It's called wanting more money because like a lot of others it comes down to being greedy
@powellmountainmike88532 күн бұрын
The answer is actually simple. If you don't like John Deere and their policies, don't buy John Deere equipment. If enough farmers boycott John Deere they will have to either change their greedy ways, or go bankrupt. Also, although profit may be less, using older, less computerized equipment which is more easily maintained and repaired, would at least insure that equipment is available when it is needed for harvests etc. Yes, this may well mean more hours of work to accomplish tasks, but at least they will be done, and not put off and put off until too late by a company which cares more about their profits than their customers. Being a farmer has never been easy, The promises made of making it easy by John Deere are proving to be a Devil's bargain. Time to accept that John Deere has been consumed by the sin of greed, and now encourages and preys on the sin of sloth, and turn to less corrupted companies, or just use and maintain older equipment from the days when John Deere was an honorable company. Let them either reform themselves or go broke.

You don't need to be told, but get rid off the problems farmers are facing! Adjust your policies or face political, emotional, and the end of how farmers and construction companies will proceed in the future! Make your products and America great again! Failure is not an option!!!! Thankyou
