I thought the standard floating bridge height was 3/32"?

Just bought the same bridge for my Jazz Bass (2011 American Special). Waiting for my new set of LaBella flats to get here so can do everything at once. Looks like it’ll be an easy swap.
@SJDewar19902 сағат бұрын
Really don't see the point of swapping to that bridge. You've gained nothing and lost mass in the bridge. If you were going to make it a string thru body, fair enough but you're still stringing from the back off the bridge. The saddles sit so high on the new one as well, you're going to lose a lot of the string vibration that transfers through the body. Honestly man, total downgrade.
@jamapx13 сағат бұрын
Angled through-body loading allows flat wounds to be passed through the body without damage due to the severity of the angle over the bridge saddles. As far as I know the BB is the only bass that has this feature.
@ManotickGuitarTech11 сағат бұрын
Good point - I generally prefer string thru the bridge anyways
@RJ_HTxКүн бұрын
So how do you determine if the neck needs to be shimmed ? How do you measure the neck angle ?
@ManotickGuitarTech23 сағат бұрын
when your saddles bottom and you still need to lower them, then you need to shim the neck. Usually about .020" works

Got a 24" long heating pad from the Amazonian, don't know if it will get hot enough but Ill increase the time it's on so the neck heats thru. Have to correct a humped neck so that may increase the possibilty of success, working with string tension rather than against it. Fingers crossed!

Have you ever tried this with a neck bowed the other way? I have a humped neck, forward bow? Dual action truss rod, clockwise increases the forward bow, CCW flattens the neck but not enough. So if I emulate your method here I would get the truss rod adjusted so it's not engaged in either direction, secure the body and the peg head and with a clamp at 7th or 8th put a bow in it in the relief direction, back bow? (I can never keep them straight, no pun!) Then I would tighten the truss rod CCW to the stop, leave it and cross my fingers. I might want to do your hot bag of rice heat treatment as well, or a couple heating pads, given the 2024 price of rice lol! What do you think?

Steve, thank you for your video and teaching! You are great at explaining and illustrating how to follow a system for setup and the works. I bought your gauges and love them. Is it better to correct to intonation after the strings are played a bit given the strings settling after a fresh set? I have a PRS SE Tremonti Charcol Burst Flame Top and really like the neck and how it plays. I installed PRS locking turners to help with tunning stability, but it doesn't seem to make that much of a difference. I wonder if changing out the nut to tusq or bone would make a difference. I don't really know what the nut is made of that some on this model of guitar, but thought it might be part of the problem. Nut action is pretty much dead on at the 0.018 inch. Neck relief is bang on, too. I did adjust a couple saddles during intonation and you method worked great, too. I love the PRS SE Tremonti and would love to get a Tremonti Signautre, but that is a lot of cabbage, but until then, I really love this SE Tremonti. Thank you again for your videos and explainations. You are the best! Jon (Erie, PA). AFTER THOUGHT, where could I purchase the style of feeler gauages you use. Love you workshop!
@ManotickGuitarTech3 күн бұрын
@@iz8758 ideally, you should check the intonation about a week after you do your setup. Make minor adjustments, if required, and then if you don't change string gauge in the future, you should have to adjust the intonation again. Feeler guages are available at hardware and automotive stores... Amazon as well.

I have found that just tuning up a step and let the guitar set for about and hour occasionally strumming it vigorously. I also have found that using graphite powder on the nut also helps also put some on the on the string trees if it has them.

I use mine every string change now. They really do get things to a stable tuning faster IMO. This is probably nit-picky, but my only concern would be the metal rollers actually hitting frets by accident -- especially when getting closer to the neck. --M :)
