the green metal handle as you described it form the undersea locker is a battery clamp for the vehicle battery I guess the one fitted is now bigger than the original and hence the bracket is left off. The two holes are for the threaded bar with a wing nut and washer on top and the 90degree angles sit over the battery edge.

I drove one of these Green Goddesses during the Fireman's Strike of 1977-78. I was based in Dundee (Rodd Road). It was an experience! rushing to fight a fire at speeds of up to 30 mph!

Finally a little tale from ancient history. My own brigade, Birkenhead Borough were fighting a huge woodland fire one very hot summer, early 60's ? They had all 5 of their pumps deployed supplemented by their 2 goddesses and the land rover light pump. Mutual aid was provided by Wallasey Borough, Cheshire County, Liverpool City and Bootle Borough. Wallasey and Cheshire supplied another 3 goddesses and everybody provided station cover or were in attendance at the fire. Within days pumps were breaking down one after another. It turned out the Home Office had about 300 goddesses stored in hangars at Blackpool airport and so 8 of them were sent to supplement firefighting operations. It took a week to extinguish and another week of damping down. I believe Liverpool City sent Birkenhead a bill for the repairs to their appliances.

After the Civil Defence and Auxiliary Fire Service were disbanded the Home Office had a stand at an emergency services show at the NEC. They were selling fully equipped goddess's, some with less than a thousand miles on the clock, for the princely sum of £800 each. Hundreds were sold abroad. Some UK brigades bought them as relief appliances but the FBU wouldn't touch them on safety grounds.

They were absolutely horrendous to drive. Turning a corner with a full water tank (no baffles) at anything over 10 mph was asking to be tipped on it's side. 40-45 mph flat out, if you're lucky. Primary purpose was to act as a water relay in the aftermath of a nuclear war. Firefighting was a secondary purpose.

As someone in the industry and teaches blue light response, you can't simply just put them on. You need appropriate training, insurance and purpose. You would need to be attending an emergency as deployed on behalf of a fire and rescue service. That's the simple explanation without going deep into it.

Section 19 of the Road Safety Act 2006 does require training, but as of the time I am making this comment, it is only Prospective, meaning that it has not come into force, which means that there is no legal requirement to be trained to use blue lights. However, most services will still insist that new employees get blue light raining anyways.

Very interesting! We are a similar age with the same interest in vehicles, I've been musing buying one of these for a long while. What addition (if any) would I need to my licence to drive it? (Would it be exempt from weight restrictions due to historic status?)

I've just found your channel and am enjoying it, but I thought i'd weigh in here as an ex police officer. With regards to the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations: Under the definitions of an emergency vehicle as per Section 3 of the RVLR 1989, you correctly identified that an emergency vehicle is 'A motor vehicle of any of the following descriptions- (a)a vehicle used for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes'. However, you didn't pay any heed to the word 'purposes'. As you own a vintage fire appliance and do not use it for fire brigade purposes as part of either a local authority brigade or other such authorised fire brigade, your vehicle is no longer recognised in law as an emergency vehicle. This has knock on implications because the RVLR 1989 Section 16, again as you correctly identified, states that: No vehicle, other than an emergency vehicle, shall be fitted with- (a)a blue warning beacon or special warning lamp, or (b)a device which resembles a blue warning beacon or a special warning lamp, whether the same is in working order or not. Because your vehicle is no longer recognised in law as an emergency vehicle it is actually unlawful for the blue lights and sirens to remain fitted, whether working or not. The police however, recognise that they are integral to the vehicle's look/image/history and its preservation so choose not to prosecute it. It is advised for the blue lights to be covered and sirens disconnected whilst driving on the public highway so that they cannot be seen by the public and there is no possibility of using them. The police are generally happy with that. Hope this helps and I look forward to seeing her restoration progress!

Can a firefighter's privately owned car or vehicle be considered as a vehicle under fire brigade purposes? If so, would it then be legal to have blue lights and sirens on it?

I generally agree with your comments on oil with one caveat. On cars without a proper filter you would want to find a non-detergent oil. Modern oils have a detergent additive which keeps particles suspended in the oil until it gets caught by the filter. On older cars without filters, the non detergent oil will allow the particles to rest at the bottom of the sump out of harms way. Using a detergent oil will mean the particles will just keep going round the engine. The most common non-filter engines you see today are air cooled beetles (there are filter kits sold) and they work fine with modern detergent oils as ling as you don't keep it in the engine too long, as such expensive oil kept for longer periods in these engines is not good. Love the Goddess and the videos!

i see you trying your best....i am an ex-RL in service driver and still own the army recovery version and parts.....tip for the long crow bar mounted on roof....long wooden handle to insulate against electric shock, also used on railways and london underground if you are looking for replacement or pattern....original hold down most likely a leather strap....keep trying, she will be worth it. DON'T crunch 1st, non synchro gear when changing down, double de-clutch..lol

Sorry to say I think your interpretation of the law is wrong because you are not a "Fire Brigade". You are are private individual with an old fire engine. Furthermore, Fire brigades only use Blues and twos when on an emergency ......not for getting home for tea!

Now in the United States we have several groups of people who have created a VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT, AMBULANCE CORPS, PRIVATE STATE SANCTIONED POLICE DEPARTMENT AND VOLUNTEER RESCUE SERVICES. Each of the above have been outfitted with SIRENS AND EMERGENCY WARNING LIGHTS that are perfectly legal. The vast majority of FIRE DEPARTMENTS AND AMBULANCES ARE VOLUNTEER SERVICES that are TAX EXEMPT AS A NOT FOR PROFIT ORGANIZATION. So my friend, my suggestion is that YOU start your own VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE WITH A RESCUE TEAM AND VOLUNTEER AMBULANCE SERVICE. Get your EMT Training and or ADVANCED FIRST AID WITH CPR AND DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING and then SWITCH ON YOUR BLUE LIGHTS AND BLAST YOUR SIRENS. Oh please don't forget about the STUTTER TONE AIR HORNS, BULL HORN and get rolling down the road. DING A DING DING! When I was an Auxiliary fire Captain in New York City our apparatus had BIG SILVER BELLS. Our sirens were a FEDERAL 28 grinder. My POV was an old New York State Police Car that had a FEDERAL PULSATOR SIREN and later on a SIGNAL-STAT ELECTRONIC SIREN. It was a police package unmarked police car. But I belonged to a VOLUNTEER AMBULANCE CORPS back then. Now in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 I am a member of the VETERANS AFFAIRS VOLUNTEER SUICIDE PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION SERVICE. During CURFEW we are exempt from the CURFEW, LOCKDOWNS and on the streets and roads constantly. The national statistics show that every single day we have twenty three Veterans who have been very successful in taking their own lives in the United States. But since the Coronavirus Outbreak here in Puerto Rico we have had Fourteen Veterans who have committed suicide since February 2020. We get a staggering amount of SUICIDE ATTEMPTS AND CALLS FOR ASSISTANCE TO PREVENT SUICIDES FROM FAMILIES OF VETERANS AND OR FROM THE VETERANS THEMSELVES. My vehicle is a FORD EXPEDITION with RED AND BLUE WARNING LIGHTS AND A WHELEN ELECTRONIC SIREN with the MARTIN HORN SIREN. And yes I am a retired Navy Veteran and an EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN. But here in Puerto Rico people don't respect the EMERGENCY VEHICLES, they won't pull over for Fire Apparatuses and Ambulances. We have to BOGART our way through traffic. But as for your video I give you A GAZILLION THUMBS UP ALL AROUND!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🇵🇷

Be careful using plumbers tape on anything that's not water. bit of it can brake up when you screw the fittings in and the the bits can go round systems and cause blockages and damage. Cooling systems aren't to bad but people love to use it on fuel, oil and vehicle airlines which can cause all sorts of problems. There are some really good liquid/paste sealants out there designed for automotive use.
