Hey man, I’ve joined a team at a higher level & my coach has put me Left Mid in a 4-1-3-2. I've been really struggling with my positioning as I am unfamiliar with the role & don't know what to do. I was hoping you could give me some advice on my positioning as a left midfielder, like when to get wide and when to stay compact.

My side plays 1-4-1-3-2. We utilize the false 9 concept from this formation. Great formation to counter attack out of. We press pretty hard. We counter press even harder when we have lost possession, within the first 3 seconds to try and win it back. Takes players who are in top physical condition, with big motors.

My u19 boys are playing this formation in Romeo, Michigan. Most of the players on this side are well skilled with individual ball skills. They all tend to be, longer, leaner body types, with tremendous speed, and big motors. Perfect for using this system to counter press our opponents. They all love playing in this formation. Also, I have two central backs that are very adept at slide tackling and both are great at anticipating the other teams attempts at vertical passing and they're playing in front of a GK who knows how to distribute the ball very well. So my GK is very involved in our building out of the back once we recover the ball.

Great video! Going up against something similar but with their biggest threat in the wide wingers. Om the left with speed and 1v1 and on the right a technical left footed winger who likes to ”pause” the game and looking for underlaping runs.

a lot of it is and in the past i certainly had to collect it all myself which was exhaustive and time consuming, more recently though the clubs I work for tend to have a data provider (wyscout, statsbomb, opta, iscout7 etc)

SO good to see your current ideas! So to summarize, when you have the time/film/data to breakdown an opponents best 1v1 players/their target areas as well as finding their best combination patters you can Pre-overload an area using defensive structure and then choose to take away a certain entry angle OR allow it for free in order to swarm as a trap. Is that accurate?

Follow up question: when you’re in such a deep block and you get the transition hold-up play can be difficult since your striker might be so low. Any solutions to this obvious downside of lowBlock?
@glen130182
@glen130182 2 жыл бұрын
I think to solve this issue is about 3-4 things, 1) you have to train your players for those transitional moments well, they have to offer composure, not play to players under pressure, whilst making quick vertical decisions where possible to find your #9s or #10s 2) you do have 1 strong advantage to not defending with a #9 (the #9 becomes a #10 for us in our third) they break between the lines, down the corridor of the oppositions CDM which is always going to be free space - in these instances they need to hold the ball a lot less than they need to progress the ball and because they can get face up a lot more ....3) I think a key counter pressing detail is to get 1 player to get underneath the line of the ball as quick as possible, as you rightly point out its likely the transition will be snuffed out more often than not and so you need to plan for this, and for me unless im missing something, then the final piece is the explode into life supporting cast to try and attack space and or get ahead of the ball quicker than the opp can recover (again with call ball carriers ideally) but you're right its a massive challenge and not easy to solve
@glen130182
@glen130182 2 жыл бұрын
It may not be the best approach, but this was my/our approach, using a mix of objective and subjective analysis where we broke down key patterns, players, locations, and ultimately where the greatest threats come from...from there we can start to design our plan around those key findings accordingly
@mindstrike6728
@mindstrike6728 2 жыл бұрын
@@glen130182 that’s a tremendous detail on the hold-up player starting out between the lines with a greater chance to turn. Thanks for the thorough answer!

The false full back is a great idea I was thinking just that before you mentioned it😂 Btw one of the other CM can come a bit deeper and create a double pivot which will usually create a 2v1 and will cause the opposition hard time pressing!
