Surely, the very best combination for gardens is a sickle, a scythe and a push mower. All three will last a life time, all three are cost-free in running, and all three are good for your waistline and your back muscles, and all three get you out in the fresh air doing exercise. All three are also near-silent in this ever increasingly noisy world.

We are just like you in our not liking the noisy strimmer and blowerns. We bought an expensive strimmer years ago, it's heavy and awkward to use, even though my husband is tall and strong, so he never uses it! I have ordered a scythe and am really looking forward to learning how to use it. Two years ago, I bought a grass hook but it had a serrated edge and never cut a thing! I thought maybe if I had someone grind the edge off, maybe it'd be better? But I saw on the website I bought the scythe from, they also sell those short handles grass hooks, with very good blades on them. Do you have any videos on scythe sharpening?

Hi, I never knew this was even happening. I was woken by the screaming of a hedgehog in the small hours. By the time a got a torch & went to see, a badger was killing a hedgehog in the meadow behind my garden It was a regular visitor to my garden. It was a long painful ordeal. I cannot access the meadow & sadly couldn't assist the hedgehog. I agree the decline in hedgehogs is desperately overlooked. Many academics are aware, yet there is very little being done to help hedgehogs. Vets offer no concessions to hedgehog charities & any charity events that raise funding, will barely cover a tenth of the annual costs of small hedgehog charities. The people who start these charities do it out of compassion for the animals. Ala's humans overall have not understood that having dominion over the earth means being deeply compassionate stewards, that respect life with a restorative approach. Thank you for your vital account. I have witnessed extinction of so much life in my time on this planet. These are very sad days.

What if you wanted a flat shaft 90° to the blade? It's a feature that better seats locking screws. You can see this feature in TNT Tooling (out of business) WSA pocket wire stripper, which has pics on Amazon, but is out of production.

i wonder to what extent foxes deter badgers - or vice-versa...for example, foxes are quick to gobble up food in urban areas, leaving less available for any badger
@HoneyBAJR2 ай бұрын
thank you for this useful /sad information - it is a valuable factor to think about for small scale urban habitat design and management, and also urban gardens with limited accses to badgers as a vital habitat for hedgehogs.

I’m going to need to move some boxes into your work shop if you can just move them up against the wall there that would be great. I’m going to go ahead and get that stapler from you thanks.

Thank you for this video, Sir. We’ve just got an allotment and I bought a grass hook for trimming (trying to avoid the petrol tool option), and this video has been very helpful indeed. I love these traditional skills, which need to be preserved & passed on. Best wishes to you :)

I bought a second hand one for 10 €, 4 or 5 years ago ; it has become my favourite tool in the garden for trimming narrow paths & corners. I'll follow your instructions for sharpening it more efficiently. Thank you sir for the "sickling" tour!

As a 15 year old I’m looking up videos like this so I can run around earning money. Might not be as fast as if I had a lawn mower but a sickle will surely do.

Another school day for me good Sir, thank you for taking the time to explain the really useful key tips. I had no idea that the blades were made of tungston steel. I will keep an eye out on eBay as you recommend. Great tip on how to make a jig too to ensure the correct angles are achieved. Keep these videos coming my friend, I'm knocking on 60's door and you are teaching me a trick or two. Big thank you 🙏🏻

Thanks and Happy New Year! I have a lot of work to do to get my grinder working as smoothly as yours. I see I can still find the diamond dresser in the US. Is the shorter spin time from the reduced mass in the wheels?
@Selectronify8 ай бұрын
Correct! It is because of the reduced mass in the wheels and particularly in the righthand wheel where I constantly use the outside face for accurate grinding because it is flat, (most toolsetters in industry do this). It is now 16mm wide from the original 20mm so I am now considering changing it and If I do then I will make a comprehensive video detailing this. Regards, Cliff

Wonderful, informative video. Have just purchased an 8" bench grinder and am working on wheel wobble and dressing. Your explanations of eliminating wheel wobble, dressing, and using jigs in these procedures go far beyond the limited print instructions offered by trhe manufacturer. Thanks so much for posting.

Loved your video. I see you are cutting the same way as a scythe. I bought a grass hook, but it doesn’t seem to cut that well and doesn’t seem to want to sharpen either. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the differences between a sickle and a grass hook, and how to sharpen them! My lawn is a bit smaller than yours but my mothers coming in a few days so whatever happens I need to mow it! - oh, I just saw your other video, which answers all my questions! Thank you very much for making these videos!
