Interesting fact: that these locomotives are similar to the USSR steam locomotives of the 1950s of the "LV" series

Wylye_guy Rode a double headed freight over the pass. Amazing experience and it was "interesting" through the tunnel shall we say. :)

U.S. locomotives sound a little better and I don't like the whistles on these too much, but overall, who could find any fault with this? Wish we had more of it in this country.

Over there, its just a job...the whistle is just like a car horn, used for alerts only....The US has the reputation of playing with the whistles.

Not to say that Dale is wrong but it could be injector... sometimes get a cloud of steam like that when starting the injector or stopping it, although I suspect it should be possible to inject without it, but it often did when I was on the control...

yes, but whatever they lack in whistle aesthetics, they totally makeup for, and more, in their running sounds. These are T.H.E. best-shuffing locomotives I've ever heard! Got to get out to Iowa to see (and hear!) some of them in person.

It's from a boilder blow-down. There is a valve near the lowest part of the boiler in the firebox area to remove harmful sediment buildup.

What is the cloud of steam at 2:20? Relief valve opening? Kind of sounds like a snort. Great video though, I love the sound of the old steam trains.

When you see all that smoke and steam it's a wonder that the Southern Pacific Railroad was the only railway through mountains that used the 'cab forward' design. (The only one in North America at least.)

I find it unusual that both locos are facing forward. That would indicate to me that the first is a helper, for only a portion of the journey, and will be taken off when the train leaves the mountainous area. Anyone know if that's the case?

@atsf7809 QJ and SY have both a steam whistle and air horn operated by a foot pedal on the floor. The whistle is eiter on or off, there is no way to "play" the whistle.
@atsf780914 жыл бұрын
why do the chinese steam engines like the qj and js have no soul to their whistling. while the older chinese engines like the sy and pacific i forget the acrnym for that have whistle chords. it make absouloutely no sense. the qj's would sound very good with whistle chords. but why don't they use them?
