I've seen your filming before on your website, and I can only congratulate with the outstanding work you put in. I can certainly see why they didn't want you to edit it. It amazes me the continuous shoveling the firemen have to put up. I'll certainly buy the DVD when it comes out so please keep me updated!!! Keep up the good work!

when the engine is working hard the drafting created from the exhaust is so fierce that it sucks the coal of the shovel to where it wasnt it and also this helps when he wants the coal at the front, he doesnt have to throw the coal that hard, the draft just sucks it to the front.

Partially correct, these engines are stoker fired. Although normally coal is fed to the firing table via a stoker motor, the QJ's had motors that were prone to failure, mostly I'm sure to lack of maintenance or poor design. So the fireman bring the coal to the firing table just inside the door and the jets blow the coal to where the valves are set. Although when the fireman twirls his shovel he is trying to get around the door sheet and rear corners where the jets will not cover. If a scoop of coal is sucked from the shovel it will go in a mostly straight pattern towards the flue sheet and most likely any fines will be directed through the flues if not burnt before hand.

These engines were all built with mechanical stokers, but these mechanical stokers were mostly all taken out of service due to the fact that the firemen could ear an extra bonus if they could save coal... The firemen usually chose for this extra bonus and because they couldn't earn the "coal saving bonus" when using the mechanical stokers these weren't used anymore... On the Jitong line a QJ was usually by two men (The fireman and the assistant driver) changing "shifts" every few minutes...

no, I think there is some mainline steam in china. But im not 100% sure.

It's *crazy* that a locomotive this large doesn't have a mechanical stoker! Does mainline steam still run in China? I think the answer was "no" last time I checked, but maybe it was just that they stopped building new steam locomotives...

It does, but mechanical stokers on the chinese engines are prone to failure. The fireman is merely bringing coal to the firing table and using the stoker jets to distribute the coal.
