It has been saved by the Solway Aviation Museum at Carlisle and several parts are already on their way to the museum. Once there, I understand that it will be fully restored to museum display condition. This Beverley never actually served on an RAF squadron, it was always a trials aircraft, which is probably one reason why it survived. Two others survived for a while after retirement in 1967 but they were both scrapped. This is the last one and I'm glad many of us coughed up some money to help save it!

Took 12 days, access to Lowry's originals and a lot of digitising! The geometry is really simple (any other artist and we would have been stuffed!). So mostly images, a bit of animation, and 12 days of graft!! Rendered using a Silicon Graphics RealityEngine. I think we used Division's dVise/dVS, but I'd need to check.

In an earlier interview, you invited people to suggest other places etc for you to explore. Hi Preston ... it's dormant, I'm afraid. The XR and medical research has actually moved on to focus on the training of defence paramedics. The original research was sponsored by the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, as, at the time, they asked us to look at VR for rehabilitation of casualties returning from the Middle East. When those casualties stopped coming through (tgank goodness), rather than cancel the work, they allowed us to continue in the civilian sector. Hence, our long-standing relationship with them. There are a couple of PhD theses by my supervised students you may be interested in. If you send me your email address (to [email protected]), I could send them to you if you like.

It's not a game. It's a VR reconstruction of an historical building in our town of Droitwich Spa. We developed the scenario free of charge to support a local organisation that is bidding to reconstruct the remains of the building. Its history goes back many centuries, and we're hoping to get a little bit of funding to develop VR scenes based on key points in history. Also hoping to involve local schools. It may well end up being a form of educational game!

It's not, I'm afraid. The company that was developing it as part of the larger consortium went belly up ☹️. A common story with this kind of tech, I'm afraid.

Not at the moment, although, taking this to local schools a few weeks ago, the kids came up with sone amazing ideas on how to gamify the scene. We pulled this current walk-through together (no funding!!) to demo how VR can help visualise the past. In the next phase, we're hoping to work on 3 or 4 different times in history and will again be getting local schools involved.

The ability to manipulate the patient is especially impressive. What allows such granular detail and movement?
@ProfBobStone-XR
@ProfBobStone-XR 2 жыл бұрын
The "patient" is a physical mannequin (Simbodie) and is part of the Mixed Reality effect, where we use a blue-screen enclosure to display the platform interior, other avatars, billboarded videos of the external "in-flight" videos. Anything that is not blue is seen as real. We used a single pass-through camera-modified HTC Vive Pro headset. The great thing about this MR example is that there is absolutely no need for expensive, unreliable and cumbersome so-called "haptic" gloves (none of which are fit for purpose anyway). Here you see your real hands and touch/manipulate real objects.
