Hi. I saw a vid of yours from last year about a VIZ 707 dual power supply. I have a 707A that I have uses most everyday since '83. Now it needs some repair. I saw you had a schematic for the 708. Can you please provide a copy or tell me where I can find one for my 707A. i will check back here periodically. -Thanks!

Hi, when you were working out the current in the circuit you forgot the internal resistance of the meter that was measuring the voltage across the resistor. I'm assuming a resistance of around 10Meg Ohm of the meter that was across the ~10Meg Ohm resistor so in parallel a total of 5Meg Ohms. Wouldn't that skew your results? What did I miss?
@bap8guy
@bap8guy 29 күн бұрын
The HP34401A had an internal resistance greater than 10Gig ohms.

I have the very same unit that i used to use on my previous job, unfortunately it needs calibration or repairs, It works at 10 MHz but any thing lower it does not. I do not have the heart to chuck it into the trash can, as I am living in a caravan and do not have any access to a workshop as i am retired as well, I live in Australia and if you are interested I would send it to you as a gift from one retiree to another.

That is a very kind offer, but please don’t do it. The post on that would probably be horrendous! You could likely put it up for sale there in Australia and get something for it. I am unsure ehat the problem is, but the fact that it displays 10mhz is promising for repair. Thank you for the offer.

Thanks for the video! I just inherited one of these but it is dead (no display, no output). Would you happen to know where the fuse is located? Thanks in advance.
@DevilCouldCare
@DevilCouldCare 3 ай бұрын
Fortunately it was only a poor power cord connection (solved by bending the power supply's prongs). The connection felt snug but apparently not all three prongs were touching. The fuse is just below the power prongs but I have no idea if the fuse is removable or if the whole power connector would have to be replaced.

I think Tektronix had better CRTs, comparing 1710 to a Tek 454 has a sharper trace. Comparing circuitry, the h/p used fewer parts. My experience with this vintage of h/p test equipment positive. I have an L band generator (can't remember the model) from the early Sixties that was dropped hard enough to snap the front handle off, and the attenuator is still accurate! The traveling probe coaxial cable which is made of silicone looks a little crispy and crunchy

Oh, how many guises these come under….lots, lets list all the ones I know of. The original manufacturer is Hang Cheng of South Korea, but they were made in both Taiwan and Japan too. There is a whole list of 20MHz models: Aaron BS-601. (My first Oscilloscope) A. W. Sperry 620C Brunelle 2988 Degem 112 Dick Smith Q1240 Elenco MO-121 Hung Chang OS-620 (Actually what the 20MHz version IS.) J. D. R. 2000 Neotronics OS-620 Pantec PAN-8022 RaTronic DI-8022 Ramsey 2200 Tenma 72-720 As yours is a 35MHz model, then it is a 72-735, but it could just as easily be an OS-635, J.D.R. 3300, Meguro 1253 etc., etc. So if you need the circuit and cannot find it online, just look under any of these rebadged clones. There are some swanky 50MHz models too, Hang Cheng OS-650, Aaron BS-625 etc. Unlike H.P. Or Tek scopes, these are very well laid-out mechanically with quite a bit of open space inside and are thus easy to get into to maintain and fix. Tek and H.P. Are brilliant at the electronic design, but the cabinet and chassis layout often leaves a lot to be desired!

Hi Bruce, it is great to see another electronics KZbin channel producing content, you have been making videos long before I started doing it and have a great collection of videos, that being said I have a couple of suggestions to help you improve the videos a bit. The first is to try and use a tripod or camera mount whenever you can, handheld camera is ok in some situations but it is always a good idea to use a stable shot whenever possible as it gives a better viewing experience. The second suggestion is to try and do the videos in a higher resolution if you can, right now they seem to be in 640*480 which is a bit on the low side these days, I don;t know if this is a limitation of your camera or something you are doing when you edit it, if 640*480 is all your camera can do then obviously there is little you can do to improve that unless you upgrade the camera to something newer, most relatively modern cell phone cameras are actually pretty good so that is an option. When I started doing videos myself I used my old iPhone 4 as a camera for quite a while until I purchased something dedicated to the job, you definitely don't need 4K or anything like that, but even going to the next revolution up of 1280*720 would make a big difference, ideally you can get to 1920*1080 as that seems to be the optimal resolution for this kind of thing, but as I said, even getting 1280*720 would make a big difference to the video quality. I hope this helps. Scott.

Do you know the year these were made ? Sorry in the early 80s thank you. Because of the high impedance, you can use this on vintage tube equipment , and high frequency radios. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hello Bruce, I'm a retired hobbyist and have a couple of these boxes. They're both in dire need of recapping. Would you recommend which brand and model capacitors I should use? Thanks
@bap8guy
@bap8guy 4 ай бұрын
Hi Jules, It depends on what you want to do with them. The original Cornells all had +/-5% 600V capacitors. If you want to use them on tube units and need to maintain the 600v capability then fine, that is your voltage. If you are going to use them on semiconductors only then 100v would be good (and cheaper). Is 5% good enough for your uses? You need to carefully document each of the capacitors you are replacing so you know the capacitance values to look for. I like Mylar, metalized polyester and Mica types (a lot of mine are made by ETR). I have found some good deals on Ebay for some very nice precision Russian capacitors, some as nice as "point" .3%. If you want a standard to check the calibration of your LCR then maybe you want to look into those. All that aside, for me I wanted a set of "standards" and went for 600v 1% or better. It is a more expensive route, but it suited my need to prove the performance of the equipment I am restoring.

@bap8guy 4 ай бұрын
Sorry I didn't get to you sooner. Over the last 13 years I have collected a lot of information from sources that no longet exist. However, the general scheme is to look up the model number and start reading through the returns. It often takes a fair amount of time and can be frustrating. I have some information on the PSG520. I'm not quite sure how to get it to you. I can also tell you that there are significant similarities between the PSG520 and the SSG520, so look that up as well.

Thank you for a real demo of this frequency counter. Other videos only show it turned on or taken out of the box. I like how to demonstrated in the KHz stepping 100KHz at a time. Then a step of 1MHz at a time. I see a 1M-ohm input. Do I need to do something to match impedance from the IF of a radio? I am sure I need an attenuator for the output of a QRP transmitter.

Hello Bruce, hope you are well. My name is Juan, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The subject of precision AC voltage dividers is a rarity among the excelent video makers in the Internet. I very much appreciate your contribution. Many years ago I purchased one of these, apparently a surplus from the military. No manufacturer's marks but I believe is at least 60 years old. Still accurate and very well preserved probably due to sturdy construction, especially the switches. The unit have 4 decades with a zero and +11 step position each. I could never find anything about this particular unit. I bought it without a case so I manufactured one myself. It would be interesting to elaborate on the use of "ratio boxes" in bridge applications, particularly to measure capacitance and inductance. Looking forward to more of your interesting videos, and wishing the best for you, Juan.

Thanks for the decent presentation. As a supplier of new and used T & M equipment, Eurias (in the Netherlands) still has a few of these VBF8 filter instruments in stock. At a price level that is well below the price tag on newer models. There are VBF8 variants with elliptic sharp roll-off, and also a few more with a 8-pole Butterworth response. These are listed in the webshop that Eurias operates, and they can be configured on order to either 120 VAC or 230 VAC mains supply.
