Great cab ride viewing of big boy 4018, it is nice to see this locomotive in motion even though it is not moving by the force of it's own energy.

It is nice to see UP rr big boy 4018 in motion being transferred to a new railroad museum home in Texas, even if this locomotive is just a display piece and not returning to operation like the UP 4014.

What is that last whistle called?
@trainmanauxl14 жыл бұрын
Nathan Sparkman I’m not certain of the exact name/type of whistle, but it belongs to Dallas Union Terminal company #7, a 1923 built 0-6-0 upgraded S-13, the same type the SP utilized in many of their switch yards.

Yup! If I remember right, they announced that 4014 was to be restored the same day 4018 arrived in Frisco, Tx.

I'd assume so, I'm afraid this was recorded 8 years ago and i'm no longer certain. But given Trainz 12 (the 2nd newest copy i own) wasn't yet on the market, i would assume it was indeed TRS2006.

I am glad I looked in the que line to find this video of yours, So I have a bit of a bucket list to try and see as many steam locomotives as I can. If the wife will tolerate it. I have a excel spreadsheet all the steamers I have researched that are running going through restoration and coming on line, we up to about 127, then i found this one. I did not know this steamer existed. ANother one to add. If I was to come out there, how easy is the route and points to set up and get pictures? I have subscribed to you, could you sub back.
@trainmanauxl17 жыл бұрын
the Route is relatively easy, the tracks run in an almost straight line and the road criss-crosses the tracks at various points. I'd take a look at google maps for the exact road layout, but there are 4-6 crossings along the way. I foresee it being difficult to get pictures elsewhere as the land along the tracks is private land. Also be sure to check the website for days when the steamer runs.

THAT BIG BOY REALLY GOING TO FRISCO IS THAN FRISCO OR SANFRANCISCO WHAT IS THE BIG IDEA IT SHOULD BE TAKEN HOME IN MONTANA NOT IN SAN FRANCISCO
@trainmanauxl17 жыл бұрын
No, no, no, Not "San Francisco." Big Boy 4018 had resided in Fair Park, Dallas, Texas from 1964 to 2013. In 2013 the Museum of the American Railroad moved every piece of their ever expanding collection of rolling stock from the tiny old museum site (Fair Park, the scene of this video) 55 miles north to the former farming community of Frisco, Texas. The MARR is currently gathering funds to better display, preserve, and restore their collection on their considerably larger (by 12 acres) new home. Now, there never has been any plan, to my knowledge, to bring a "Big Boy" locomotive to San Francisco. Additionally, "Big Boy" locomotives never called Montana home, their "Home" was in Cheyenne, Wyoming. They had very little reason to ever make such a trek to Montana. Further more, IF 4018 was being moved to San Francisco, there would be no point in changing plans to bring it to Montana, as the state is not populated enough to justify the cost of moving it there. I personally detest the idea of bringing locomotive classes with more than one survivor "home." There is no point for all 8 surviving big boys to be preserved together in Cheyenne. Would it be neat? Yes. Would it be practical? No. Same with the GG1 class of locomotive. There is no point in preserving all 13 survivors on the east coast alone, spread them out, educate people on their place in history. We had a few people protesting moving our 0-6-0 "7 Spot" out of Dallas, as it had spent its life there. However, the City of Dallas would not take care of the engine if we gave it to them. They'd let it rust and be vandalized until it was a rusty piece of scrap. So, we kept our "7 Spot" because we could take care of it.

What's going on here? They moved this nice locomotive on to these shitty rails. What a brilliant idea.
@trainmanauxl19 жыл бұрын
Your sarcasm has been noted. What is actually going on here is that the big boy is being moved FROM it's home of 48 years,a 1.5 acre lot in the fair grounds in Dallas, TO a 12 acre plot of land in Frisco, Tx where 4018 and the rest of the collection can be displayed in all their glory. And like i said, 4018 hadn't moved from that lot in 48 years, naturally the track hadn't gotten any attention since the 60's either.

@trainmanauxl110 жыл бұрын
sadly, no. She's being used for short 'fun train' runs. she runs out for a while and pushes the train back. They're trying to preserve her aging boiler as best as they can, so it cant be under the strain of the stock yard run.
@Godzilla691138MW310 жыл бұрын
trainmanauxl1 yeah true. Cant blame her, at least the diesel is for support if she breaks down or something in the middle of the main line. At least she still puffs steam and is still see chuffing down the tracks, then that's ok for me.
@trainmanauxl110 жыл бұрын
Very true, I'd hate to see her 'stuffed and mounted.' Also, I have a correction; she still makes trips to the stockyards, but not everyday like she used to. I'm not sure of the schedule yet, so if you wanna catch her you need to check the website.

@trainmanauxl110 жыл бұрын
I have not heard anything about that. i would assume it to be false. Dallas Officials and Fair Park Officials hated our museum and were VERY happy to see us go. They gave us a figurative middle finger when Big Boy finally left and the threw a 4-ton concrete slab across the rails.

The museum website says the caboose was donated in 1966, serving a good 40 or so years on the rails. However, it's unclear if the caboose was active in 1965 or 1966.

kansasrailfan101: the tank cars are used for braking/ballast. 4018's brakes had deteriorated and we didn't have to funds to rebuild the brake system, so we bypassed the locomotives airlines and used the tank cars brakes.

Does the boiler have the integrity to support running it still?
@trainmanauxl111 жыл бұрын
The boiler (i've been told) is in remarkable condition. the rest of the engine is so-so. to restore it would take about 3-5 million(an educated guess). And that would depend on how much "original material" you want to keep. What i'm saying is that it would take a lot of work, time, man power, and money... and a place to actually run/store/maintain it. So, to sum it up: If you throw enough money at something, you can make it work. Though there isnt a huge point in restoring 4018 because 4014 will soon return to steam... but it is nice to have two of something...

Well, he doesn't understand that these giant machines can kill, he wanted to climb all over it when we were moving it and threw a fit when a railway official told him 'no.' Plus he thinks he owns the train and can boss everyone around (apparently he still hasn't gotten out of the 'mine' stage), and as ALCOPRO suggests, don't take everything in the comments section too seriously. The problem with text is you can never tell the author's tone of voice.

I know about this 2-10-10-2's! They had articulated locos as far back as 1890's. Just a few! Well, it's good to hear that BNSF has relented a bit. The last time I spoke to anyone in the know, it was pretty negative. Cheers!
@trainmanauxl111 жыл бұрын
i know ATSF had some 2-10-10-2s WAY back, but they didnt steam well (look them up, they have a very interesting construction) and were split in half and turned into two 2-10-2s each. And then there were the ex N&W mallets you mentioned. BNSF buying Big Boy is just a little joke among us as we currently have a better relationship with BNSF than UP.
