I did appreciate the Video and quite agree with your advice about focusing on the niech you feel comfortable with. I am using MemoQ without subscription at this moment. But I could not find a free machine translator built in. Any way thanks for your attention!

Thanks for a great video. As a freelancer, I use AI a lot but always double-check what I get from Chat. At least google the phrases, esp. legal terms.

You make lots of sense. Just yesterday, I responded humorously to a work email and got ChatGPT to translate it into Gaelic and Romansh. Had I hired some T&I professionals to do this for me, it would have been a sign of me taking leave of my senses. I’m sure there are lots of potential clients out there who do the same with low-priority translating. Now let the bashing begin!

Thank you for this video. This is something that has concerned me in the last few months with seeing AI pop up so much. I did try it on some legal translations to see how it would do and at the examples shot back, I really would absolutely not recommend using AI for translating anything that might impact anyone's life without having a human review and edit. So thank you for pointing out that it will not ever compare to a human. That acknowledgement eased some disturbance there thank you. This does motivate me to go and search for more clients since currently I do only translate in a legal niche for one client but do need to broaden that client base. Translating is an art form and while it can be annoying, frustrating, challenging it's so enjoyable to me that it matters maybe just not enough to let it go altogether and pursue other forms of remote employment. Your channel though helps me stay focused on what I enjoy for work. Thanks again and looking forward to many more videos. And if you know anyone that needs a US based legal translator... thrilled to help!

Yes. To be fair, most clients I talk to know fully well that AI by itself will make mistakes. This is a good example of how someone who knows what they're doing can make better use of AI: kzbin.infoUgkxkjv89i1bfG-8GAqJg9TPu61iu3TWajv4 But yeah, unfortunately that doesn't solve the problem mentioned in this video, so I hope this helps! PS: Always mention your language combination when mentioning you're a translator!

I think AI must be shut down in order to protect our jobs.

How would that work? The technology exists. I don't think it can be "shut down".

I don't fear it, I have contempt for it and anyone in the media who assume that anything spat out by Google Translate can be run in an article without any checking.

Exactly. It is a tool, and it can be dangerous for people who don't know what they're doing. But in the hands of professionals it can be an excellent tool.

I'm from the United States, and Genji is surprisingly my favorite book. I read both translations a while ago; probably I am due for a repeat. I found the Heian World easy to understand and get in to; although the names (like in Russian novels) take some attention. For me, it felt like a Romance. Genji has a lot of sexual encounters, which seem sort of the usual thing for high class gentlemen of his period; but he tends to treat them pretty well. He eventually raises an underage girl to be his ideal Mistress. She accepts how he is; but they suit each other as they both age. When she dies, he dies shortly after; maybe realizing that she was what he was always looking for. The continuation of the story, after his death, sort of shows how.. in comparison to the next generation.. he was something special. I'm not sure this is how the story was intended to be taken, but it was my impression. To me, Genji is not a bad person, but a sensitive, special one, trying to behave as his World expects; but also trying to find his way.

You said "don't pay for a website", you recommend that, but otherwise you said "go to proz and sign up". Signing up in proz is not for free, in fact it's so much expensive for those who are starting out. Do we really need to sign up there? If you don't pay for a membership, you don' t have access to jobs. So, proz is not an option for me to get clients. What about Translator's Cafe?

Yes. Proz.com is still the main website for translators out there, so I do recommend signing up and having a completed profile!

I've used google translate for languages I speak and I'm not worried. lol! A.I will not be successful in replacing human translators. There are so many elements to language . Companies can go for it and try but it won't have the same level of accuracy. Google translate is a perfect example of how inaccurate and unreliable it can be. It has left me scratching my head a few times. :D

Hello Robert, While I understand your focus on courses, I hope you won't stop posting videos on KZbin. I am sure that many translators, including me, appreciate your hands on approach to translation from your videos. For now, as far as I know, only you and Adrian do this on KZbin. Thank you for everything, Ioana

I don't know why so many translators are against ChatGPT. I've found it to be a research tool that sometimes comes out best when all other sources fail, particularly for figuring out acronyms. Of course, you have to check the output, but sometimes I want to shake its virtual hand and call it an AI model and a scholar.

hehe good point. Shows some of the limitations of AI.
@kellenyau37703 ай бұрын
This is how I do it as well. Even with a free account, ChatGPT allows us to turn off "Improve the model for everyone." Of course, that's not a good enough guarantee that the data isn't still stored somewhere. I wouldn't use ChatGPT to churn out poems, like the example in the video. Its limitation starts to show when it's required to do stylized creative work like this. After a while, all the poems sounds and feels the same, especially when it needs to conform to a style or structure.
@FreelanceTranslatorTips3 ай бұрын
Oh good point. I should have mentioned turning off "Improve the model for everyone". And I confess I don't have any evidence or anything that ChatGPT doesn't maintain confidentiality, but I know several smaller companies (besides big ones like Samsung) that just prohibit ChatGPT no matter what, precisely for this reason, so that's just my inclination. The poem was done more for fun. I think was just sick of staring at that text and wanted to try something different. But I agree, ChatGPT for poetry or literature is worse than abysmal.
