Great video again Mik. So you don’t have a written contract for events? I really appreciate your sharing your rates and verbiage on what is included. 😊

Thank you for this video. Great refresher for a 50th Wedding Anniversary next weekend. Also, I extend my sympathy on the passing of Brixton. My dogs are my family.

Ik heb 16mm 1.8 van viltrox en 35-150mm 2.0-2.8 Ik twijfel om 35-150mm bij te houden voor concerten En voor festivals en indoor dance festivals te werken met 2dehands a7cii+ 85mm of 135mm van viltrox En nieuwe 2dehanda a7iii te kopen met 16mm 1.8 van viltrox en werken met 2 cameras Wat denk jij ? Denk in mijn plaats met jou ervaring

So I would normally agree with you and everything you said is correct. However, it's only because there are so many variables moving at once at an event. ETTL makes things easy and stress-free in terms of the flash. However, it often increases post work because a lot of times, it guesses incorrectly. So what I do is I start eliminating some of those variables. I don't depend on bounce flash just because too many times, the ceiling is too far away or it's outdoors. Or the side walls are too far away. So I love my MagMod MagBounce which I can make behave like a softbox for my speedlite. It also means the flash action is predictable. So many events like a gala is fairly dark but the lighting is consistent. So as you mentioned, distance matters a great deal (inverse square law after all). So what I do is I have 3 sets of conditions: 1) large group that is further away, 2) small group that is closer, and 3) individual person. I set all my variables for each of those and I save as a preset. So when I get into that scenario, I load that preset. The preset is only a base so I take a quick test shot, make the necessary adjustments (which should be quick because I've already set the general settings) and then do the final shot. In the worst case where I don't have the time, I just take the best guess shot and then I can edit in post since a flash pic is usually easier to edit than a non-flash pic especially with how good lightroom and photoshop are nowadays with ai masking.

What's the lowest shutter you would use, or a standard low shutter speed, for an event without much movement of subjects (not dancing)?

I have 4 of those and did pictures for a basketball team. It cast horrible shadows behind them no matter where I put them. Yes they are the cheaper ones but that’s all I can afford at the moment. Would it help if I get big umbrellas or will these flashes not be strong enough with those?

Brixton's face says "this is stupid. Let's go to the park". Little does he know, this video is amazingly helpful for an amateur photographer. Appreciate the art, Brixton.

The key to being a successful photographer is to diversify not to shoot only events but also know how to shoot portraits wildlife sports, all that good stuff.
@MikMilman27 күн бұрын
Why do you think that?
@natedagreat9027 күн бұрын
@MikMilman means more jobs, if you only shoot one genre you are basically limiting yourself
@MikMilman27 күн бұрын
That's one way of looking at it, but the other is that you may never be perceived as an expert in any one of those genres.

I just cannot find the quality with the xt3. So far. It’s very saturated and the compression looks awful. I don’t know. I may need to change cameras.

Sound advice what if you get the shit slightly wrong cut a foot off? Then you have to crop a bit more to get it balanced?

Great work Mik excellent advice.. How do you set your flash to fire? Do you use multi flash? And continues shoots? And another question do you use your flash off camera holding it in one hand and camera in the other?

Six hour events can be exhausting and you definately need solid footwear. And carrying around a bag for six hours is impossible! I take multiple bodies with primes and a zoom. But I stow them somewhere accessible and carry one or two as I walk around (carrying multiple bodies is the downside of shooting primes). At dinner events when people are moving around, I have been known to put one camera down on a table to concentrate on some shots and then forget where I put it! I also use Olympus M4/3 for about 50-70% of my shooting. That cuts out a lot of weight.

I've been watching your videos for years and I want to say THANK YOU. You were the first I've seen to really dive deep into Event Photography. I want to do more lifestyle type stuff but Event Photography is currently my strongest suit. I think because it's not as stressful and more journalistic if anything.

I love your videos! Question: I shoot in both raw and JPEG. When you shoot in a high ISO do you also capture raw photos at that high ISO range?
