can you use course olay sand as a top dressing and if so how much?
@TheSoilBar5 ай бұрын
@@lindaparkins8306 I find that play sand isn’t ideal as its tiny particle size can limit the amount of O2 that can get down into the soil. However if that’s what you have to work with then just try a very thin layer of it (just enough so that you no longer can see the soil underneath)

Are there any issues with top dressing plants in self watering pots? I have a few lechuza pots that have pon on the bottom and the rest is soil.
@TheSoilBar5 ай бұрын
Self watering pots can be great and yes I recommend top dressing. Just be aware top dressing does help retain moisture so you may not need to refill the self watering pot as often as you have in the past

Which ones would be okay for Petunias? I'm not sure which ones would be okay or too much.
@TheSoilBar6 ай бұрын
Hi! For petunias I am assuming you have them outdoors right? Outdoor plants don't require the same type of top dressings like indoor plants do. However, it is always a good plan to top dress. I'd go with a lightweight dressing like fir bark that way it doesn't damage the delicate blooms. Make sure your fir bark is healthy and free from pests. When purchased at big box stores the bark is not kept in air tight containers nor inspected prior to packaging and that's how pests can show up semingly out of no where. If you are interested in a clean product that's pest free we are reopening the online shop on June 9th 2024! And our first 100 customers will automatically get a discount. www.TheSoilBar.co

The plant is beautiful. Because of its need for humidity I’ve switched to Leca with almost all my plants. The transferring to Leca means that the plant must develop water roots. I’ve tried 3 methods. #1 Clean ALL organic matter from roots until white and then in Leca. I make sure that the roots are fully covered with water. #2 Clean ALL soil off and put them in water to develop water roots. #3 Cut all the roots off and either use Leca, or Fluval to build roots. The myth that the roots will root ifthe water level is to high is false. How’s it possible to build water roots without the roots being in water? With time and depending on the root system of the plant eventually the roots will grow down to the moisture which in time develops water roots. Basically all my hydro plants roots stand in water. That’s when I know it’s time to repot. Regardless of the method the soil roots will rot which means that after 1 -2 months the roots should be checked and the dead roots pulled off the plant. One very important point is to soak the Leca at least 24 hrs. to enable it to absorb moisture. It’s also helps the plant adapt to a new environment. Also by shaking the pot while holding the plant will settle the plant in position. With a vessel with no holes it’s necessary to “flush” the plant periodically to get rid of salts and chemical buildup from the fertilizer. Have you made a video of preparing/cutting holes in a glass vessel for semi hydro use. This enables air to circulate through the vessel and helps to prevent root rot. Good luck. When is the update coming? Thanks for the video.

You said you can probably go up a pot size. I have a huge decorative pot i bought for my wife for mother's day. Had planned to put it and some trailing ive around the edges. Can the majesty palm not be in a large container?
@TheSoilBar6 ай бұрын
Hi there! Great question. And it's on my list to make a video on this very topic soon. The size of the pot needs to be large enough for the root ball to expand and grow into. Too large though and the roots aren't able to access and utilize the the extra moisture and that will lead to root rot. 6" diameter increase in size than the previous pot is the max to give you a rough idea. If it's larger than that then what I like to do and the tutorial I plan to make on this topic is to conceal a smaller pot INSIDE of the huge decorative one. I elevate the smaller pot using lava rock under and around the sides. The elevation puts the plant at the right height and also provides excellent drainage for the palm's excess water that flows out the bottom of the inner pot. And the lava rock is much lighter weight that other materials while still providing enough that it keeps the huge decorative pot stable. Be sure to subscribe so you get a notification of when I do the video soon on this topic! Happy Planting!

@@TheSoilBarYES!!! Wow. I actually made the right decision then. Haha I bought a pot a little bigger than the one it's in, maybe 2 inches larger, but will fit down in the big pot. I have gravel for the bottom. I did buy landscape fabric so I could put dirt around the palm pot, it not mix with the gravel, and grow Ivey along the edges. Hoping that works. I saw a comment where you said you had a good palm mixture so I went to your online store to buy that, but it is closed. :( I did do as you suggested though and got some course sand. Only thing I could find was "builders sand" but it's much more course than play sand. Going to mix that, peat moss, perlite, and some soil. I was a landscape designer for 15 years, but this is literally my first indoor plant, ever. Well my wife's. She leaves all things green to me. I definitely subscribed. Looking forward to more content. You have a great way of fully explaining things that is hard to find for indoor plants. I'm ready to fill our house with them so I'll be watching along. Thank you!!

Oh and I'll be getting lava rock instead. The gravel idea will make it wayyyy too heavy even with me setting the palm on top of an upside down pot inside the big pot.

It's not a coir, nor has any coco coir in it , it has peat in it , plus its actually not more environmentally conscious actually its a byproduct of the massive deforestation happening here in the southern US , coir is far better from a environmental stand point

@TheSoilBar9 ай бұрын
I’d go with something like a fine fir bark. Just make sure it’s good quality because regular mulch types in those giant bags ate full of gnats. I like for bark also because it’s got such a lovely aroma. If you send to be a forgetful or sporadic waterer (like I am) then these plants also love Diatomite top dressing because it holds a lil moisture and turns white when it’s bone dry giving nice reminder that the plant needs a drink 😊 you can find both top dressing varieties at www.TheSoilBar.co and you can also find fir bark from other companies. The coarse diatomite though is something only carried at The Soil Bar. Happy planting! Lemme know what you go with!

@TheSoilBar9 ай бұрын
Great question and I have been asked this quite a bit and here’s my response: houseplants kept indoors can be repotted at anytime of the year. Reason being is that we are providing a simulated ideal environment by protecting the plants from the normal seasonal elements. So if you have indoor majesty palms and they need a repot, no need to wait till spring 😊

I haven’t been able to find it lately…if you are having a problem with pests best product is The Soil Bar Diatomite. Pour it over the top of your pots soil just enough so you can no longer see the soil. And that’s it! It not only gets rid of any present pests in your soil (they need this soil access to reproduce) by killing them it prevents any future issues. It’s also the only product you literally can’t have too much of. It’s 100% natural. Other similar products are out there that make this claim but those are a powder like substance and that will NOT work and is also very bad for your lungs. TheSoilBar Diatomite is very coarse so it stays put and no powder that is being breathed in. It also can be mixed into the soil as an amendment to help with aeration. Online sales are on pause at the time I’m writing this BUT it will resume April or May 2024 so check back for its restock! Https://www.TheSoilBar.co

Hi great video So when you repot, do you remove all the top dressing first?
@TheSoilBar10 ай бұрын
If it’s pumice, diatomite or fir bark top dressing then I like to mix it in WITH the new batch of soil I’m using to repot ( it never hurts to have a lil more substance/amendment in a soil mix!) Then I repot the plant with the fresh soil that has the old top dressing mixed in. Then I give the repotted plant some fresh top dressing. That way a Great question. Also if you like you (or anyone reading this) can reply to this comment with the name of the plant and region of the country you live and I’m happy to suggest the type of top dressing I’d recommend trying. Happy planting! 💚🤎💚🤎💚

That makes such good sense to me for the gnats and finishing off the pot. Would monsteras be ok with a very light gravel? The Ficus are getting bark as soon as I can find some! Thanks!
@TheSoilBar10 ай бұрын
Most monstera (like the deliciosa) are very hardy and aggressive growers so they’ll b fine with gravel, however it’s not ideal. I’d suggest for bark because of its natural deterrent to gnats (deterrent doesn’t mean preventative. Think of it as the equivalent of standing near someone with BO, it’s not gonna stop you from entering the room, but you’d look for an alternative room if there is one 🥴) if you want to STOP, eradicate and prevent ALL fungus gnats then the only product I suggest is coarse diatomite. It’s the only solution I’ve found after much experimentation and we carry it at The Soil Bar exclusively. It’s the ONLY all natural and organic top dressing that prevents pests. It even helps plants roots grow stronger. Can’t say enough things about it. It’s an amazing product and you don’t need a ton of it when you use as a top dressing. 1 quart will top dress 4 or 5 regular sized indoor pots (6” pot ish)

I am new to plants, and I always thought that if you completely get rid of the old soil, the plant will go into shock and die. I got that from another video or somewhere else on the Internet I have no clue. 😅
@TheSoilBar Жыл бұрын
It’s not the old soil that you want to preserve it’s more the integrity of the healthy root structure. That’s why I say allow the palm to dry out a bit to make it easier to gently shake off the old soil.
