I used succulent soil, regular potting soil and orchid bark when I repotted mine. It was a baby when I got it from Home Depot.
@TheSoilBar Жыл бұрын
The draw back is that with “succulent soil” most have the tiny particle size for the sand they use similar to play sand…this is the main culprit for compaction of the soil and lack of air flow. That’s why we created our palm Mix www.thesoilbar.co/product-page/palm-mix-1-gallon that has a grittier structure

@TheSoilBar9 ай бұрын
Great question and I have been asked this quite a bit and here’s my response: houseplants kept indoors can be repotted at anytime of the year. Reason being is that we are providing a simulated ideal environment by protecting the plants from the normal seasonal elements. So if you have indoor majesty palms and they need a repot, no need to wait till spring 😊

Ok thank u im gunna do it today I just watched your video again im heading to Jerry's and a plant farm off the road to get 14inch pots these are in 12, but now as the weeks have gone on I thought I was watering the soil n9t ahole lot just some in the under pot those plants are thirsty! But now the leaves are dying I did my plant identifier on diagnosing the problem it says brown spots! So are they now diseased? Either way I'm getting a bacteria/ fungle spray to do all my plants as soon as I buy plants they 3nd up with this? You said you can probably go up a pot size. I have a huge decorative pot i bought for my wife for mother's day. Had planned to put it and some trailing ive around the edges. Can the majesty palm not be in a large container?
@TheSoilBar6 ай бұрын
Hi there! Great question. And it's on my list to make a video on this very topic soon. The size of the pot needs to be large enough for the root ball to expand and grow into. Too large though and the roots aren't able to access and utilize the the extra moisture and that will lead to root rot. 6" diameter increase in size than the previous pot is the max to give you a rough idea. If it's larger than that then what I like to do and the tutorial I plan to make on this topic is to conceal a smaller pot INSIDE of the huge decorative one. I elevate the smaller pot using lava rock under and around the sides. The elevation puts the plant at the right height and also provides excellent drainage for the palm's excess water that flows out the bottom of the inner pot. And the lava rock is much lighter weight that other materials while still providing enough that it keeps the huge decorative pot stable. Be sure to subscribe so you get a notification of when I do the video soon on this topic! Happy Planting!

@@TheSoilBarYES!!! Wow. I actually made the right decision then. Haha I bought a pot a little bigger than the one it's in, maybe 2 inches larger, but will fit down in the big pot. I have gravel for the bottom. I did buy landscape fabric so I could put dirt around the palm pot, it not mix with the gravel, and grow Ivey along the edges. Hoping that works. I saw a comment where you said you had a good palm mixture so I went to your online store to buy that, but it is closed. :( I did do as you suggested though and got some course sand. Only thing I could find was "builders sand" but it's much more course than play sand. Going to mix that, peat moss, perlite, and some soil. I was a landscape designer for 15 years, but this is literally my first indoor plant, ever. Well my wife's. She leaves all things green to me. I definitely subscribed. Looking forward to more content. You have a great way of fully explaining things that is hard to find for indoor plants. I'm ready to fill our house with them so I'll be watching along. Thank you!!
@coachtim61886 ай бұрын
Oh and I'll be getting lava rock instead. The gravel idea will make it wayyyy too heavy even with me setting the palm on top of an upside down pot inside the big pot.

I haven’t been able to find it lately…if you are having a problem with pests best product is The Soil Bar Diatomite. Pour it over the top of your pots soil just enough so you can no longer see the soil. And that’s it! It not only gets rid of any present pests in your soil (they need this soil access to reproduce) by killing them it prevents any future issues. It’s also the only product you literally can’t have too much of. It’s 100% natural. Other similar products are out there that make this claim but those are a powder like substance and that will NOT work and is also very bad for your lungs. TheSoilBar Diatomite is very coarse so it stays put and no powder that is being breathed in. It also can be mixed into the soil as an amendment to help with aeration. Online sales are on pause at the time I’m writing this BUT it will resume April or May 2024 so check back for its restock! Https://www.TheSoilBar.co

I thought it was weird that you repotted the palm but did not water it. Do you water before you put the top layer or after. I would think the sand is going to into the soil if you top water it.
@BabyGirlRiley2 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing about watering it but palms like to be moist not soggy so the fresh soil and the watering to come would be sufficient.
@TheSoilBar2 жыл бұрын
I like to add water to my new potting mix prior to using it. I like the soil to be just a little bit moist (not soggy) before adding it to the pot. This way there’s a lil bit of water available for the plant BUT not too much as they are initially going to halt all water intake due to the change in environment. As they settle theyll be ready to end their water strike. Usually about 1-2 weeks. With that being said sometimes after a repot i will top water it. Usually prior to adding the top layer because the purpose of the top layer is to keep moisture in. However it’s not some vital requirement. You can also water after adding the top layer. But you’re correct, the gritty top layer can get a lil messed up if you’re watering spout is pouring heavily on one area of the soil. Just keep the nozzle pressure low or use a watering can that has a spout that is wider with a lot of lil holes to disperse the water better and prevent splashing

Hi, great video. Do you feed the majesty palm with fertilizer, if yes, which one do you use and how often?
@TheSoilBar2 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question! For my palms I stick with all natural products that we carry at The Soil Bar including worm castings and Rovk dust. The worm castings I sprinkle about 1/4 cup onto the top of the pot every six months or so and then water it in. This provides the nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus to the plant to support its growth. It also has magnesium and a few other elements. Then the rock dust is the powder form (don’t use the granulated. It doesn’t get into the soil as well) and I sprinkle about a tablespoon onto the tip of the pot every few months or so. Like worm castings it will never burn or harm your plant so no worries about using too much. Rock dust magnesium, calcium, potassium and silicon, and also provides about 70 additional trace minerals.

I just found your KZbin channel. I just bought some majesty palms. Everything I've read say that they are not toxic to cats, which I have two fur babies need to keep them safe 😊. Cats like to dig in sand like things because it reminds them of kitty litter 😂. Are there any suggestions as to how to keep my cats from being able to dig into the soil or sand and still provide air for the plant?
@TheSoilBar Жыл бұрын
Ah the dreaded question! There are some special “covers” for pots that allow the stems of the plant to poke through and also it’s semi permeable so water and air can pass through. They’re usually brown or black mesh spongey material. Try searching on Amazon for “plant pot soil cover” and you should find something oh the like. However I will say if your cats are dedicated to the cause, it’s not gonna stop them from ripping that soil cover off too. Perhaps place the pot on a tall pedestal?

I am new to plants, and I always thought that if you completely get rid of the old soil, the plant will go into shock and die. I got that from another video or somewhere else on the Internet I have no clue. 😅
@TheSoilBar Жыл бұрын
It’s not the old soil that you want to preserve it’s more the integrity of the healthy root structure. That’s why I say allow the palm to dry out a bit to make it easier to gently shake off the old soil.

How do I get more majesty palms from one plant? I would love to grow babies
@TheSoilBar Жыл бұрын
That’s a great question! And to be honest I’ve only grown them from small baby plants and never propagated. I would assume though that like other palms a baby cluster will begin to show and at which point you can separate that from the mother tree to grow on its own. But I’m not certain! Let us know though if you have any success with growing babies!
