Thats actually the wrong way to remove the bonnet.. removing the bonnet for maintenance is a regular occurrence, so you pop out the E clips that hold the bonnet hinges. Then hold the bonnet firmly, jerk it sideways or put pressure on to one side, and the hinge will pop out the pin.. then gently slide off the other pin and lift away.. everyone does it this way.. 😎 It's ok as you're gonna paint it, but you'd be trying to line up the bonnet gaps if you do every time you work on it. And the studs snap..

I hope you read this comment sooner than latter as from what i can see, you forgot the o-rings in the bottom of the cylinder liners. Without them all your hard work will go to waste once you start the engine as the oil and water will mix togheter. Best regards and i hope i didnt write too late in the process.

Pour les segments as tu bien twisté a 120°?

Get a timing disc for the crank, and a dti as you'll need to set the timing of cam. Specs will be supplied by piper. Port match head to manifolds, nice n easy to do. With that cam you will probably be able tonjust increase the 1st stage boost enrichment, but defo get a decent wide band afr. If the scorpion exhaust is in good condition, keep it as its decent enough for your power level. I always preferred a side exit purely for the noise😂. Take you time building the block, clean, clean and clean. And make sure you check liner protrusion. Not sure if you got the head checked, but we'll worth checking the oil passage up to the rocker shaft. They had a habit of cracking after a rebuild (seems to be the re torquing of headbolts causes it) and it will dump oil into the water. A decent engineering shop can line bore it and put a bronze sleeve in. Might be worth considering. Best of luck👌

Hope you have kept the big end caps in the correct order as they are a machined with the con rod and not interchangeable. Also, i would just replace the water pump, as the bearing looked fairly tight, you dont want to go through all this trouble to have a leaking pump. Depending on your end goal, if the rest of the pistons are ok, you can get that det scar machined off, we used to skim the pistons by 1mm in the very early days to lower compression ratio to run silly amounts of boost. So a few though shaved off will do no harm, just make sure all the pistons are machined the same. I wonder if it was cylinder no.3 as we always found that cylinder to run leaner than the rest due to the carb/manifolds flow characteristic. Also, get a tap and die set, or a thread restore kit and use that to clean every thread on the head/block etc, will make reassembly so much easier.
@Renault5Rebuild

Thanks for the advice will definitely look into thread restoring and have indeed kept all the big end caps in order.

@Renault5Rebuild no problem. Have built many c1j's in my time, some standard most powerful was 271 bhp. Used to run a business tuning early Renaults so will be here to help if needed. Great to see them being kept alive. I still have a 5, but mine has a audi 1.8 20v turbo engine, still a work in progress but will be awesome when finished👌. Are you planning a standard rebuild?

@Renault5Rebuild around 180 is the sweet spot and easy to achieve. If you want to change the cam, a piper 285 and vernier is a great choice and retains good driveability and idle. However, it will need a t25 turbo to get the most out of it. Intercooler look for a decent alloy intercooler, or sometimes a pace chargecooler will crop up on ebay, these are very good for that power level and easy to fit and neat, too. As for fuelling, you can achieve that power easily with basic mods to 1st and 2nd stage boost enrichment, sounds more complex than it is in reality. And finally, I'd invest in a wide band lambda sensor and gauge, as then you can be 100%, it's fuelling well.
@Renault5Rebuild
@Renault5Rebuild 26 күн бұрын
Sorry for the late reply! Just realised I missed your comment. I have indeed gone for a piper but the 275 with vernier as recommended by piper for the kind of driving that I plan to do. Thanks for your comments and support.

Don't put silicon hoses on your cooling system unless you are building a race/track day car, they leak coolant over time and your constantly filling up. Standard rubber hoses are the way to go for a street car. Silicon are however the proper ones for all turbo plumbing.

Your old and strange apprentice suggests completing the engine, so all components are in and not getting lost…. Make sure it starts and therefore oil is on all components…. Use fogging oil and mask up intakes and exhausts…. Buy a dehumidifier and insulation for your garage doors…. This should keep any moisture away from the engine and you won’t lose anything :-)

I did send another comment but seems like its dissapeared :( I had a spare engine stored in my garage and ended up selling it as i knew it would deteriorate over time even though i plugged up all the ports to reduce condensation. As you are lucky enough to have yours in bits i would coat everything in preservative oil & vac bag as much as possible. restore & rebuild when your ready to pop it back in the car. only my opinion so google 'engine long term storage' and plenty of help out there

First time I stripped an engine, I got to the point where I wondered if I’d ever get all the bits back in the right places. Scary but an amazing point to be at. And this is the first time I’ve seen an engine where the linings come out with the pistons, presumably because it’s not a cast iron block. (Showing my age again) so even at 70, not too old to learn. Thanks Gregg, fun and informative again. Your apprentice seems to have grown much older and stranger though?
