Congratulations on your 80th video! I know it’s winter time but it doesn’t look that overgrown to me. I think someone must be clearing it otherwise wouldn’t it be overrun with brambles? Very interesting and a great discovery.

Hi Sue, I would hate to think what it looks like in the height of summer we couldn't get into one gun pit as it was. It is still used by the owner for storage that's why you can access most of it, and if you look on the internet I think it gets a few visitors from time to time despite it's remote location. Thanks for commenting ATB Steve.

I live in Lincolnshire and as you probably know the county was plastered with WW2 airfields. Many had control towers, hangers, workshops and all the rest up until fairly recently but sadly a lot of it has gone now. Runways have been dug up for hardcore. Shame but I suppose it’s inevitable as time passes.

I don't go as fast as you in your car as I cycle up the runway on my bicycle. I often cycle around that area. I find it peaceful. Thank you for teaching me more about the airbase and the brave young Americans who helped win our freedom. My grandfather was a Lancaster & Mosquito pilot and Pathfinder. Cycling on the Deopham runway I often think of him taking off on another mission. He survived 66 missions and returned to civilian life and farming. I remember him driving the combine. It always seemed huge when I was a child but it probably felt tiny to him after flying Lancasters.

Hi Claire, I remember cycling to the old airbase about 20 years ago when the runway was more intact. I also think a lot about the men and women who served at these bases, they can be quite atmospheric! I can't believe! I have been planning a bicycle journey incorporating the West Lynn ferry, this past few days, and out of nowhere your videos pops up! Is it easy getting the bike off the ferry and onto the steps, and vice versa? My bike + camping gear is around 33Kg. Awesome video.
@Invictaman-62Ай бұрын
Hi John, what a coincidence eh! I only planned this route the day before but I had been meaning to use the Lynn Ferry for a while, the short answer is, it's a bit tricky. I had no problem as my bike is quite light, getting on in West Lynn is easier than getting off in Kings Lynn. Just be aware that the ferry is tethered on the West side but he just buts it up against the steps the other side. I don't think you'll have a problem just tread carefully when you get off. Enjoy your journey and I can highly recommend the traffic free route in Kings Lynn if you go that way it was really safe and enjoyable. Thanks for commenting and please let me know how you get on! ATB Steve.
@johnvine5731Ай бұрын
@@Invictaman-62 Thanks for the speedy reply. It sounds like I will have to debag to make things easier. Yeah, those steps on the East side look dodgy; and knowing my luck that Gate 13 number may come into play. Now I'm not fancying it so much, but that may change when I get a lighter bike. The traffic free route did look good in the video, and it is on my route towards the north coast! I'll let you know how I get on with it, when I manage to get up Kings Lynn way. Thanks again.

Interesting stuff, always thought it was USAF base, but now realise was only used by them and was in fact RAF base! Im a Yarmouth lad myself but used to work rackheath industrial estate and generally know the area well! On an explore in that area some years ago i stumbled across an unusual "opening" into the ground, circular in shape but clearly not a well given its position! It is well hidden in a group of trees on road nearby and often woundered if linked to ex air base etc!? Do you know of any similar type openings that there may have been, or perhaps completely unrelated!? Many thanks!
@Invictaman-622 ай бұрын
Hi norfolknchance, as far as I know US bases even today are still MOD property the yanks just lease them (i worked at Mildenhall for 27 years).Your hole in the ground could be several things, if it was a concrete circle with a small square in the middle it could have been a Picket Hamilton fort. There was normally 3 of them for airfield defence. I can't think what else it could be, was it deep? Possibly an air raid shelter! The day we went the weather was crap, so a return maybe necessary for a deeper explore when the foliage dies down a bit. If you can remember the location can you let me know via email, my address is the description (I think). Thanks for commenting there will be more old airbases coming soon. ATB Steve.

As I understand, the guns were mounted on the sea bank and not on any buildings you will find. None of those buildings are, or were substantial enough to mount a 6" gun. You missed another narrow building with a drainage channel running down the middle (which I think is the magazine) hidden in the bushes about 35/40 yards to the west of the tower and to the north of that hidden building, behind the sea bank is a retaining wall, I'm guessing to stabilise the base of the bank behind the west gun.
