Where can I get brake cylinders for Chrysler Windsor 1948 please thanks
@davidhollingsworth5665Ай бұрын
Hey mate I'm 8 months too late but when packing a tapered bearing you need to push the grease up throught the bearing not just rub it on there Push the grease up through the big part of the barring where the bottom of the rollers are until you see it come up through the small side and just work your way around you'll only get about 2 or 3 roller bearings at a time. Hopefully you can make sense of this.

Hey. Thanks for that tip. You'll see down the line that i actually have to go a different direction on the rear axle, so will remember that for round two! haha

Good video. I used that puller tool on my 57 Plymouth differential. I used a rattle gun on the puller nut. It worked great. I also left the castle nut on to protect the thread,and so the drum didn't fly off.

The disc's are locked because the master cylinder has a residual check valve that keeps about 10 pounds of pressure in the lines so your disc brakes will always have pressure. Also never bleed drum brakes with the drums off.
@michaelkrumm11984 ай бұрын
Now you need a disc / drum master cylinder and a proportioning valve otherwise the disc brakes will have residual pressure from your old master cylinder.

Thanks. This video brings back a lot of memories. I learned to drive in my dad's 1948 Dodge 3/4 ton pickup. It had a four speed (granny low) and the cool little curved back windows. The truck was originally owned by my uncle, dad bought it from his widow after he passed. Me and two buddies made lots of money hauling hay from the field to the barn using that old truck in the late sixties. Thank you again for reviving those memories.

They are core plugs, they are there for clearing out the sand after casting, they will not keep the block from cracking when it freezes.
@AB-dl1hz7 ай бұрын
They are called freeze plugs and if you have too much water in the engine the plugs will pop out instead of cracking the block so where did you get your information from😅😂 you damn sure not a mechanic
@55desotomine7 ай бұрын
From Wikipedia; "The slang term "freeze plug" was coined many decades ago out of ignorance of the true purpose of the core plugs-they were never designed to be displaced by water freezing inside the block due to a lack of an anti-freeze/water mixture; their displacement is merely coincidental if freezing does occur. The sole purpose of a core plug is to literally act as a plug in the holes designed to be in a casting which allows the casting sand to be removed during the manufacturing process" From Core Plugs International; "The term freeze or frost plug is slang; the correct name of the press-in plugs is actually 'core plug'. It is mistakenly thought that the purpose of these plugs is to be pushed out and save the block from cracking if the engine has water in it and it happens to freeze. This is nothing more than an urban legend. The purpose of the plugs is to fill the holes that were made during the casting process, so the foundry could remove the 'core' sand from the coolant passages. Saving the block from cracking in case of a freeze was never the manufacturer's intent for these plugs." From mgtech; " These plugs are simply used to close off a hole in the casting which was formed by a supporting arm of the sand "core" which was used to form the hollow cavities inside the engine block while molten iron was being poured into the sand mold. Thus the proper term "core plug". Yes, I was a mechanic for most of my life, retired now.

Thanks for the videos. Haven't dug into this project yet, but on your project what was needed in terms of cleaning up the spindles?
@gofarmotors7 ай бұрын
I'm not really an expert, but mine were in really good shape. Just a bit of buffing with a wire wheel and they cleaned right up. That said, the wheel hub is riding on an inner and outer bearing, so as long as those bearings fit on, I'm not sure it is crucial if the spindle is in perfect shape. The threads for the spindle nut probably a critical item and mine were good. The inner seal area on the spindle was also another surface I really spent some time on with the wire wheel to try to make sure was nice and smooth to get a good seal and keep the grease in!

Yeah you tightened that pinion nut waay too much, 15 inch pounds is a little over one foot pound, not as tight as you can do it with a 15 inch wrench lol, wheel bearings are done the same way, kinda surprisingly low torque spec.

@gofarmotors9 ай бұрын
I bought the conversion kit from DCM . Website here: dcmclassics.com/ I was really happy with the kit. In the rear, I just rebuilt the drums. I know there are a few disk conversion kits for 8.75 mopar rear ends, but be careful. I wasn't able to find any options for this year of truck. The rear end in this isn't a true 8.75. I don't think those come along until 1963. So don't think the kits would work. The rear axle on this truck has friction fit hubs. Really different from the 8.75 you in 1963 and beyond. Likely a whole new rear setup if you're looking for disc brakes in the rear.

Engine out. New engine I'm working on rebuilding. Clean up everything. King pins. Got the new engine mounted at least. Not running yet, but hoping early next summer....

What is the bolt pattern on your pick up and do your stock steel wheels fit thanks
@gofarmotors10 ай бұрын
Bolt pattern is 5x4.5". The discs in this set are the same pattern. Great question about the stock wheels. They didn't fit as they were rubbing against the caliper. Will have to buy a wheel spacer or upgrade to bigger wheel for them to clear. DCM says 16" wheels should clear. I haven't confirmed yet. Will probably buy a spacer. I just have them mocked up with washers at the moment. haha
@dclementlec7 ай бұрын
What did you end up doing rim wise? Size and or spacers?
@marvinwiens277411 ай бұрын
The bearings are way too tight, just snug them up using pliers while turning the hub to seat the bearings. Stop when you feel it start to drag and then back off about a 1/4 turn and install the cotter pin. This gives proper bearing clearance and the very small wiggle in the rotor will back off the brake pads slightly to prevent heat buildup and possible brake fires,
@gofarmotors10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tips. I will be re-installing these when I get the truck together again (front end is all pulled apart while I tackling a bunch of stuff). I will go with this. In retrospect, they were put on way too tight!! Fun to learn all this stuff!

A guy I knew had a '55 Chrysler and he refused to mess with it so he put a complete rear axle from a '57 Ford under it and had a driveshaft shop redo the drive shaft. Has the same bolt pattern as the Chrysler and a close rear axle gear ratio.

Hey GoFar. Good job. I agree with the comment below. You need lots of grease in those bearings. I bought a lot of stuff from DCM. They are pricey, but they have what you need, so you have to pay up. I still have to change my front end over to disc brakes yet. Thanks for sharing.👍👍🍁

Hey GoFar. Good video. I didn't bother messing around with the original rear axle in my Fargo. It is geared too low for my liking. I removed it and replaced it with a rear axle from a 1992 GMC Jimmy. The wheels were a bit narrower with the Jimmy rear axle so I used a 1 1/2" wheel spacer on the spindles to even the wheels out. Thanks for sharing.👍👍🍁
