I absolutely love you guys. The entire field of Electrical Engineering, and all it's teachers. You guys just calmly explain how a circuit works, until we get it. It took me 3 years AFTER my 4 year education to FULLY understand every single component of a circuit. When I remember back in class, I had absolutely no clue what was going on in those radio schematics, but you all knew one day I would and just calmly explained it out for us. Thank you so much. I have benefited from this video in so many ways. Foremost by understanding all I have to do is hook up a circuit, a known, well priced circuit to a an analyzer and I don't even HAVE TO KNOW what is happening with the components. I could EVEN IF I WANTED TO just try out random circuit configurations until I got better results, then voila! A new circuit!

@TheStuffMade21 күн бұрын
I recommend getting as close to 78k as possible, you can use 82k and 1.5Meg in parallel, that is what I used, just solder them on top of each other. Alternatively you can use this calculator to find suitable resistor values in parallel: www.qsl.net/in3otd/parallr.html Make sure you use 1% tolerance resistors. Cheers, Jake

I wonder what is the idea of setting different Bandwidths in THD vs Freq tests? Setting different values yields different readings. Can you explain why? The higher the bandwidth - the farther to the right on the plot goes a slump in THD percentage ( 10-fold decline). What does it mean and is the Bandwidth setting related to the primary signal freq range in our tests? Why should we designate the Bandwidth at all? 😮 I noticed 20kHz, 43K, 62K settings in different videos applying the AA suite. I tried different settings with the above obzervation. Please explain and advise.
@TheStuffMadeАй бұрын
Hi, the Bandwidth sets the highest frequency content you want to include in the measurement, so you could argue it should be left at 20kHz as that's as high as our hearing will go. However there are scientific studies suggesting we humans can sense higher frequencies, as in e.g. we can sense the difference between regular CD content 44.1 ksps/16 bit (22kHz bandwidth) and high res digital recordings e.g. 96 ksps/24 bit (48kHz bandwidth), the same with tapes and vinyl that can reproduce higher frequencies. For the distortion, you need 2 times the fundamental frequency to measure 2nd harmonic distortion and 3 times the frequency to measure 3rd harmonic distortion etc etc. So e.g. if you set the bandwidth to 20kHz, you can only measure THD up to 10kHz. To measure 3rd harmonic distortion at 20kHz you need a bandwidth of at least 60kHz. Hope it makes sense. Cheers, Jake

Thank you for this Jake! I tried for a year to find a service center that could diagnose and repair this mint condition 20+ year old deck for me. Most shops required shipping and a $150 diagnosis fee, which did not include parts, labor, and return shipping. Even the old repair technicians won't touch tape decks anymore. As many stated below, your demo/tutorial gave me the information and nerve to try this. After careful study, a $17 belt kit on ebay, a lot of patience, and 3 hours labor, my deck is like new again. It sure was not easy, but better tools, better light, and a helper would have made this easier. I only tried this because of your help!

Thanks for the great piece of software. I was wondering if under the THD vs Power you can disable the limitation where testing stops if the THD exceeds the 10% max value specified. I was hoping to use it to characterize audio devices that have a goal of distorting a waveform as is common for guitar effects like Fuzz and distortion pedals and these devices can distort signals up to the point where the is very little fundamental.

Happy 6 year anniversary to this video! I can't believe I'm stuck on getting the belt on. The video does not show any close-up detail on this. How were you able to get the belt between the large pulley and the white plastic gear that drives the pulleys? I can pry the assembly apart to get the belt over the pulleys, but the gear doesn't seem to separate enough from the belt to slide the belt in. I assume the belt simply loops around the large and small pulleys, correct? My belt was not only snapped, but 100% goo. Yuck.
@TheStuffMade2 ай бұрын
Thanks. If you remove the screws in the front and the back of the mechanism, like I show in the video, then there will be enough space to both remove the old and add a new belt 29:24. Edit: if your old belt left behind gunk on the pulleys, make sure to clean them first. Cheers, Jake

Hi - first off really want to thank you for your great Audio Analyzer Suite, it really is a very useful tool for anyone doing audio work! I built this preamp and did all of your mods...but I am getting an oscillation - clicking or popping sound every few seconds shortly after powering up. I was just wondering what you think is most likely causing the oscillation? I have been testing the preamp using variac output at 12-15v AC, but plan on getting a proper 12v AC supply soon.
@TheStuffMade2 ай бұрын
I wouldn't recommend using only a Variac, that can be quite dangerous as they're not isolated like a normal transformer, so you'll have everything at mains potential, including everything you connect to the preamp. This is likely the reason for the popping you're hearing as it could overvolt the coupling capacitors if your source or final amp is grounded. If you have a transformer that is 16-40V output, try use that together with the Variac adjusted to get 12VAC, then you'll get full isolation and most likely the popping will go away. Cheers, Jake
@bdbellstuff2021Ай бұрын
@@TheStuffMade I apologize for taking so long...got a bit busy with things. After reading your reply I took your suggestion and tried a 18v AC transformer I had, through the variac which didn't make any difference, and then I got a 12v 1amp transformer, thinking maybe the 18v 800mA running at ~70v wasn't providing enough current...but the same results! So at that point I took a closer look and I discovered two transistors were in the wrong position - really stupid mistake! I had built it months ago, when it had the problem I put it on the shelf - and when I pulled it out recently I 'ass'umed that I had checked the transistors already but obviously hadn't - I would like to blame it on old age...but I hope I am not quite there yet :) - anyway sorry to bother you! I am glad I got the opportunity to thank you for AAS - I have a QA403 but find your AAS just provides a better and easier to understand display of the status of a device - thanks!

excellent built! can we use a 7805 as IC3 and a 7905 as IC8? what happens if we remove the lm334, i cant understand how it works. could we use some simple diodes (in combination with the +/-5v rail)for that "more negative/positive" voltage needed to the end of the CC pots? thank you
@ronkessler15992 ай бұрын
Just ran across this and I am happy to find a solution. By any chance, did you use the FFT function to discover the frequency of those spikes? The RC values show a cutoff Freq. of ~102Hz. Just curious. A full bridge produces 120Hz ripple so is that consistent with the switching IC? Thanks for taking the time to make the video!

"You may have two units placed side by side, one giving 2% THD and the other 0.0005% at full power, and both claiming to provide the ultimate audio experience. The ratio between the two figures is a staggering 4000:1, and this is clearly a remarkable state of affairs. One might be forgiven for concluding that distortion was not a very important parameter. What is even more surprising to those who have not followed the evolution of audio over the last two decades is that the more distortive amplifier will almost certainly be the more expensive." Douglas Self

Hi, when you measure input and output impedance, what load do you use? Many thanks
@TheStuffMade2 ай бұрын
For input impedance I'd use something like 47k-100k, maybe larger if really high input impedance. For output impedance some resistors in the range 1k to 10k should work on a preamp, for a amplifier speaker outputs I'd use 4 and 8 ohm. And for headphone outputs 50 to 500 ohm. Cheers, Jake
