@@TheStuffMade Very cool. This has been a VERY useful tool for comparing different amps to each other and seeing where they fade out and/or need some help. I haven't played with some of the other stuff it does, but look forward to the phono stage update! I honestly wasn't exactly sure how to test those preamps on that shootout, but I just hooked up a 100K dummy load to the output, set the Vrms in on each one to get equal output power coming out, and tested them like I would a normal amp. So I research and found people like the HP3903B better than the Keithley 2015THD? so than if you had a choose between the three which would you pick? or any other software out their? like the QA403 Audio Analyzer? looking for THD and noise for now testing higher output Amps.
@curtislucka99542 жыл бұрын
@@musicstevecom The HP8903B is an audio analyzer so has more audio testing capabilities than the Keithley 2015THD. That being said both are great but come from the 80's/90's and limited to around -95dB THD+N measurement. I would lean toward the QA403 that can measure down to around -120dB THD+N and much lower for just THD. It also has excellent software to support quite a few audio tests - the price isn't that bad - I think about $550. An HP8903B in good condition would run over well over $700 on eBay. Although if you have $30K lying around then Audio Precision can't be beat!

@@musicstevecom I should have mentioned that for the money AD2 with it's excellent software/GUI is hard to beat, especially with the extended graphing capabilities of the excellent Audio Analyzer Suite. I have used AD2 since it first came out and it correlates well with the 8903B and 2015THD. More capabilities emerge with the AD2 Wave Forms software updates, so it has been a good investment all around. While I have not used the QA403 it does appear to be able to measure lower distortion and noise levels, and provides more audio tests, as mentioned before (kind of a poor man's AP). The QA403 is experiencing some supply chain difficulties at the moment, but I plan to try to snag one once available again. Good Luck!

Thanks, yes, I don't recommend the BNC adapter for general use because it shorts all the negative connections together, so that's fine if you only measure tube amps and you know what you're doing, but since many amps these days are class-d with bridged outputs then you'd be shorting the amp outputs together and likely end up with smoke. I would be interested in having the complete file, but, with the information you have now provided I could probably get by with what is already there. I think you could get a better idea of the number of people interested if you would, on a fee basis, make available a cad file (or pcb) and bom for the jig you described in the user manual. Don't know what it takes to set up a payment system on KZbin, but you could probably do it on DIY Audio if you couldn't do it here. Hey, thanks for a great piece of software! I notice you have a lower THD than I do, even when directly connecting W1 to 1+ and grounding 1-. I can get to 0.04% at best but you seem to get 0.01%. I'm pretty sure it's the wavegen as I can get 0.01% from another source (HP 35665A). Is this a known limitation of the AD2 over the AD1? I'm testing the Pass F5 amplifier and it supposedly can have a THD even lower than this and it certainly seems so but I'm hitting this limitation
@TheStuffMade2 жыл бұрын
Hi since the AD uses a DAC to generate the wave output, you'll need to raise the voltage (use all the bits) to the get lowest distortion. Doing that will let you go as low as 0.01% distortion. The design and performance of the AD1 and the AD2 is exactly the same, only difference is the AD2 got a variable output power supply that can deliver more current than the AD1's fixed supply out. Cheers, Jake

Does the "Audio Analyzer Suite" work with additional models from Digilent such as the ADP3250 and ADP3450? My guess would be yes as they are based on common technology but as those higher end devices cost several times more, it would be helpful to know prior to buying them. Any comments appreciated, especially from the software author.
@TheStuffMade2 жыл бұрын
I doubt it would work out of the box and I haven't heard of anyone testing it. But I agree the new devices are very similar to the Analog Discovery, so it probably wouldn't require much to make it work. However from the specs, it looks like the only advantage of the ADP3250 and ADP3450 is more scope channels and more bandwidth plus a nicer enclosure with BNC connectors. For audio measurements we don't really need more bandwidth than the Analog Discovery already got, and there is another difference, the Analog Discovery got balanced inputs whereas the specs for the ADP3x50 says they have single ended inputs, that means if you try measure an amplifier with bridged outputs (e.g. a class D amplifier) then you'll be shorting the amplifier outputs using ADP3x50. This makes the Analog Discovery better suited for audio measurements. Cheers, Jake

Hi, what is the reason that the IMD measurement was taken out of the manual ? in previous versions its part of the setup.
@TheStuffMade2 жыл бұрын
It wasn't removed, the IMD feature still works the same way as before. I started updating the documentation but it's not been a high priority to finish it. I have an updated software version and a new design for a plugin board that will support most of the features of the software including IMD. I also have a new phono stage plug-in that will allow very accurate measurements of both MM and MC inputs all the way down to 0.1mV. I'll release it soon, but currently I'm too busy with work. Cheers, Jake

Hello and thank you for the updated version! I think there is an issue with THD Vs freq, at frequencies above 10 khz, values are about .009% which I think are too low for a 14 bit device. THD + N looks good at about 0.02% across all frequencies. Can you look at it and comment as to why the low number figures. Thanks again!
@TheStuffMade3 жыл бұрын
Hello Roch Tourigny , If we do the calculations: 14 bits will give a dynamic range of ~86dB (20 * Log10(2^14) + 1.7) that gives a theoretical minimum distortion of 0.005% (10^(-86/20) * 100). However I suspect you have perhaps set the bandwidth too low, keep in mind to get 2nd harmonic distortion you need the bandwidth to be more than twice the frequency, and for 3rd harmonic distortion it must be more than 3 times the frequency, also keep in mind that doing more averages will increase the resolution and lower the noise floor. You can choose between plotting THD+N, THD, or only 2nd harmonic/3rd harmonic distortion to get a better idea of what kind of distortion/noise you are looking at. Hope this helps. Cheers, Jake

@@TheStuffMade will it work w the new Analog Discovery ADP 3250 have you seen this yet? I'm going w Analog Discovery after looking at all the others , Thanks I hope it works w it
@TheStuffMade2 жыл бұрын
@@musicstevecom I haven't heard of anyone trying it on the new pro range of Analog Discovery devices, but I doubt it will work. Also I wouldn't recommend the ADP 3250 for this purpose as it's only got single ended inputs unlike the AD 1 & 2 with differential inputs. This is important if you measure an amplifier with bridged outputs, such as most class D amplifiers, you'd short the output to ground and something will start to smoke. Cheers, Jake

What is the lowest THD that can be measured (i.e what is the loop back) THD .. Can lower THD values be achieved with an external signal generator.?
@TheStuffMade Жыл бұрын
The AD is a 14 bit device, lowest distortion is around 0.01%. The performance is comparable to the classic distortion analyzers from HP, Tektronix etc. It might be possible to get slightly lower THD values with an external generator, however I don't see how you'd sync them. Did you have a look at the PDF included with the software: "This audio measurement suite is primarily aimed at people doing repairs of audio products to easily perform a number of measurements and diagnose the device being repaired, however it can of course also be used to aid design of audio circuits etc. The Analog Discovery hardware is limited to 14 bits, this does mean it’s limited in the dynamic range, however it does allow measurements at higher frequencies up to 10MHz which can be very useful when working with switching/class D amplifiers or perhaps investigating an amplifier circuit going into oscillation far outside the audio frequency range." Cheers, Jake

Hi Sir, do I need WaveForms to use it? it's compatible with Analog Discovery Pro ADP3450 and Adapter BNC Male to 6.35mm 1/4 Inch Male Audio Cable to analyze my audio interface? Feature Request: - Acoustic Response - Frequency Response - Crosstalk - Signal Analyzer - Input sample rate - Multitone Analyzer - Generator signal (pink noise, sine noise, white noise, custom) - SINAD (Signal-to-noise and distortion ratio) - SNR (Dynamic Range) The software APx500 Flex audio analyzer is too expensive, but I would pay for your project.
@TheStuffMade2 жыл бұрын
You need to have the waveforms software installed as it relies on the API. It's only been tested to work with AD1 and AD2, I doubt it works with the ADP3450 as it's not really feature compatible with the older AD modules. Many of the features you request are already available in the software. My software is free, it's just a hobby project. Cheers, Jake

@@TheStuffMade I want to buy the ADP3450 for analysis of audio devices, such as interface and sound cards, this model is the most advanced and I will test it with Waveforms and its software, and I will be commenting on my compatibility results. Likewise, it would be a good idea for this project to be your cover letter to be an active Digilent engineer, being part of a company from a hobby project is great, your project becomes an added function to the next version of Waveforms, to professionals in the audio industry. I'll be in touch, 👍🏻 My best regards.
@TheStuffMade2 жыл бұрын
@@SirioAstarot You can do most of the measurements using the Waveforms software, it's just not as convenient. Anyway, while the ADP3450 and the AD2 are very nice devices keep in mind they have a limited dynamic range (just 14 bits) compared to most audio interfaces these days being 24 bits. Meaning they are not ideal for audio performance measurements, but still great for basic testing and fault finding during repairs. Cheers, Jake

@TheStuffMade5 ай бұрын
@@edwinatkin5282 Sorry I didn't see your reply, I think youtube didn't notify me. Are you using any attenuation? Sounds like there might be an issue with that gain status on that screen, anyway, the intended way to measure the gain of your amplifier is to use the frequency response tab, here you get 2 values for each channel like x.xx dB / y.yy dB, the first value (x.xx) is the level compared to the level at 1kHz, the second value (y.yy) is the gain. So if you do a frequency response and set the cursor at around 1kHz, do you get the correct gain? Cheers, Jake
