I worked in a California prison for 7 years. California inmates make a LOT of stuff. The agency is called CalPIA (prison industry authority). Food, furniture, clothes, cleaning supplies, modular buildings, even GLASSES. They're also ONLY allowed to sell to government agencies. They basically help make the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation a lot more self sustaining. Inmates who work at a CalPIA facility also have a recidivism rate nearly 40% LOWER than the rest of CDCR at about 7%. They heavily invest in inmate education programs as well as hiring parolees after they serve their time. Also, they get all their money through the California General Fund, which means they receive $0 in federal funding.

From what I've gathered the Fighting Game Community has come up with different genre names for every type of fighter. 2D Fighters for the Street Fighter clones, 3D Fighters for the Virtua Fighter clones, Platform Fighters for the Smash Clones and Arena Fighters for the Dragon Ball Z Budakai clones. You may think those Godzilla games are Arena Fighters but actually? They're Wrestling games =)

@AfterlifeGames a 2 to 4 or more Vs fighting game with omnidirectional movement, potential weapon pick ups and multiple options dedicated to grabbing your opponent. Now you're probably wondering. How does this differ from Power Stone-likes? Well, the simple answer is we don't have a name for Power Stone-likes because no one FUCKING MAKES THEM ANYMORE. So they just get rolled into Arena Fighters despite not really fitting.
@AfterlifeGames

@@AfterlifeGames Can't just take one part of it the whole stew is what matters. Soul Calibur doesn't have a universal system around grappling because it's primarily a weapon fighting game. It has less than even most 3D fighters as most characters just have a front and back throw. Meanwhile a lot of wrestling games have a "grapple" state where you grab onto an opponent before deciding which grab you want to do to them.
@AfterlifeGames
@AfterlifeGames 5 күн бұрын
@MrSandMan961 But so do a lot of grapple-based characters in traditional fighters like King or Wolf Hawkfield. Do you see what I'm getting at? Your definition was incomplete and you have to keep adding specifics to narrow it down. The point of the video is that it's _pointless_ to do that.

I'd say anybody that just thinks about this for more than a few minutes will realize the truth, but the reality is that people are so woefully uninformed that they have no info of it to go off of, and so woefully uneducated that even if they did they couldn't piece it together, that I realized just by thinking it over for five seconds that the special kind of ignorance fostered by American capitalism is one so entombed into daily life that even in the age of the internet, where the knowledge of the human race seems available in its entirety to all, the knowledge of injustice and the destruction of society that is staring us right in the face is something the majority of the people will be forever blind to the truth and scale of. The simple fact that NASA, something truly beneficial for scientific advancement for humanity, operates at a budget that is only a small, small fraction of what money is given to the American military, an entity essentially solely designed to feed the system just as you described, should clue people in enough as to where the true goals of the ones in control lie. (hint hint, its to keep them in control)

I don't think there was ever a politician, mayor, governor, or president that was a ever a saint. It always comes down to power. "Ill change this thing going on in the world. If I get your vote." Sometimes I feel the human race is just going to destroy itself before any other world disaster comes and takes us all. We are a floating rock in space. I don't think world peace will be a thing. There always has to be war and controversy. In a weird way we evolve from the aftermath of those type of events going on in the world. It would be nice to have to be able to do anything someone wants to do with there bodies or move to what ever country we want. Not everyone moving in next door is a good human. People should be able to do what they want with their body. Doesn't matter if you agree with it or not. There is always something bad going on in the world. Evil will never go away. Freedom of speech is a thing but you will get hated from someone that doesn't like your opinion.

The best way I can think of to address this topic is to do what the term "genre" should have been doing all along: describing the player fantasy/intended experience. That word "intended" is key here. Mechanics are all interchangeable between any gaming classification, but the intent, flavor, and internal context of a game is what turns Portal into a puzzle game rather than a first-person shooter.
@AfterlifeGames
@AfterlifeGames Ай бұрын
But Portal isn't strictly a puzzle game, is it? There's a huge platforming component in there. And I think it's an oversimplification to say that it _isn't_ an FPS. You still shoot things from a first-person perspective. The only difference is that you're shooting walls instead of enemies. Then again, sometimes you have to shoot specific spots to take out enemy turrets. So I wouldn't fault anybody for calling Portal as an FPS. I don't think considering intention solves the problem. A game's genre is determined by its mechanics. But maybe the bigger issue is that people aren't able to identify specific mechanics when they see them.
@fightingleaf
@fightingleaf Ай бұрын
@@AfterlifeGames Perhaps you're right, but then maybe the "FPS" part of its description is irrelevant. It's a puzzel-platformer, because the point (which is to say, the designer's intent) of the game is to solve puzzles and move from various platforms more than it is to shoot targets. Shooting targets is only a means to solving the puzzles. In a more typical shooter (which should probably be renamed as well), the shooting of targets is the point of the game more than anything else, but even in that case, the shooting of targets is STILL secondary to the main point, which is typically to FEEL like a soldier of some kind. Therefore, while maybe not irrelevant, the actual mechanics involved in a game (which, yeah, we don't have really hard vocabulary for either) are only secondary to what ought to define genre in the first place: the intended fantasy/experience. Therefore, the point of a "Fighting Game" is (or should be) to feel like a brawler/martial artist. That's not quite how we use the term, true, but I think using it that way is at least a first step to fixing our flawed vernacular. We'll never really remove all the overlap or wiggle room with other genres, especially if we want to innovate games, but this should help us paint a more consistent mental image of the games we discuss.

I only played the demo, but unless they patched out the dry dialogue and need to pause the game and read a dictionary to understand what's going on, I don't see the point of experiencing it further, or why it was so well received. I guess mashing attack and flashing lights really draw people in.

bro your videos are spectacular. this is only my second one but you're so eloquent and articulate without needing tons of stupid buildup and drama. you understand the homemade documentary format so well and we don't have to wait through tons of red herrings and dead ends intended (with the best of intentions) as context for an audience less familiar with the broad landscape of games and media. i think you're occupying a relatively small niche as far as v.g. content goes but its always thought provoking and well considered. thanks man please keep it up, channels like yours are really few and far between. i saw on some of your older vids you had a discord and i would love to see that come back for a community to talk about this stuff as media literacy in videogames is still sorely lacking!! keep it up and all the best!!👏💕
