When I was young I saw this song as talking about obsessive love. Now I realize the song is about Mike Been's religious experience and his reverence towards God. The song works both ways which is why it's great.

I saw The Call it was Aug 1983 on my birthday, it was a Peter Gabriel Concert and The Call opened, The Call was getting booed the moment they came out (before they started playing) well Peter Gabriel came out and had a talk with the unruly crowd and they settled down...I already liked The Call I had their album Modern Romans, by the time they finished their set the crowd was cheering, Michael Been was amazing when he sang it was like he was singing to YOU with his fist grabbing you by the shit collar and YOU payed attention...a really dynamic performance. I couldn't imagine how those yahoos felt at the end of the show booing them at first and then cheering them at the end. Of course Peter Gabriel was fantastic as usual, I've seen him 5 times.

This song and I Still Believe got me through a very rough 1986. I worked for a college radio station and that same year I got to meet The Call and interview them when they played at Central Michigan. Serendipity at it's finest.

Just discovered this a few hours ago, here in Lima-Perú. We have this radio station, they play mostly rock and the thing is that I really dont listen to radio almost never but today granny turned it on and after a couple of songs this came up...I instantly LOVED IT. Such a shame to find out the lead singer is no longer with us....I'm an 80's child and never heard of them...Ever. I will check their music out for sure.

Listen to "Let the day begin " "The walls came down" " I still believe" and look for a version of "I still believe" by Robert Been, Michael's son. It is live at The Troubadour"... You're welcome

Micheal Been was the greatest writer, singer, musician. I made friends with him and Dan Shields his manager that was with U2. Such great people! So sad Micheal has left us. Such a great talent and so inspired the religion that I love. His music is timeless and his message for ever. Hope you have met St. Peter Michael, God and all the Angels, Bless you my friend 🙏❤️

June 1986. This track would just boom out of the speakers and fill my dance floor. Courtesy of the great production of Been and Eaton and Tom Skinner's mastering. Big hit for me.

I remember seeing the video of The walls came down in the eighties. I was hooked. No air play in my home area. I knew all the local stations were in a vacuum. Thank God I found them a few years ago. At seventy three I still love their music.

Back in the day when they were around, I only knew their one big hit. ( Though I did see them at my university around nineteen eighty six) But thanks to KZbin, I'm discovering their backlog. Man the 80s were one of the greatest times to be alive. I'm so proud of my generation x. Great music like this is dead today. So eighties, so quality. Rest in peace lead singer guy.

They're good, but absolutely NOT the most underrated band of all time, lol. There are so many bands that got less attention and acknowledgement but deserved way more.

Like Hothouse Flowers, they had a message. Both didn’t preach however. They made good music that promoted what was important to them. Bully for that. Take of it what you want, and move forward.
