Competitive freediving is statistically much safer than shallow spearfishing and the most dangerous part is the top 10m where most blackouts happen. Is blacking out a real thing? Absolutely. That's why you always have a buddy, to help you when you can't help yourself. For recreational freediving, you shouldn't be approaching hypoxia, but accidents do happen. Some cenotes are beautiful on breath hold, btw. They tend to be the ones which are basically straight up and down. Freediving is a lighthearted and fun athletic activity. It has more in common with competitive swimming and yoga than it does with scuba. If you don't get it, you don't get it, but both the dives themselves in the short term, and in the long term working on one's technique and develop one's self physically feels good. It's an awesome feeling to start off doing your first 25m in the pool, and then later find yourself doing 50m with no fins! Similarly depth is a lovely feeling on breath hold. It's a test of one's comfort level and relaxation in the water, among other things. Freefalling into the depths (in a cenote!) is a peaceful feeling where you just let it happen and you arrive!

I grew up in the north and got Ice Diver certified. At the time I thought it was great. The water was clearer, you could walk upside down on the ice and you could hold fish in your hands. From the cold perspective as soon as my face and lips went numb it was fine. Note, I used a neoprene dry suit which is warmer than the fabric dry suits. But, after living in the south for 40+ years my ice diving days are long behind me. I am not into the deep skin diving. But, I do understand why it appeals to some. I just want to stay down longer. Now cave diving, I don't like tight spaces. Although, I enjoy wreck diving. Bottom line at this point in my life our opinions agree.

I went on a dive trip in Florida where the boat Captain dropped off spear fishing divers first and then went up current to drop off the group of us who were not fishing. Unbeknown to us we then became the drivers who pushed fish toward the spear guys. As soon as the sound of a spear hitting a fish happened, a couple sharks showed up. I love seeing the Sharks, but I would like a heads up about that entire program. Not being informed about the how that was going to play out didn't feel comfortable.
@TampaBayDiving9 күн бұрын
I can understand that point of view. Sharks can sense the vibrations that occur when a fish is speared so it naturally attracts them. They're hoping for a free meal. To prevent this we generally try to stay down for 10 minutes at a time. I've stayed down longer and had them make a pass at me trying to steal my fish. That part is no fun. @MaciejJeszkeP12 күн бұрын
In the central EU, if you want to dive for more than 4 months, a good dry suit is a must have. Plus with a good thermal underwear and extra warmer. If this is still not enough for someone, there are heating systems. Diving in a dry suit is a re-learning of buoyancy control and a different style of controlling your position in the water. It seems to me that it is definitely worth it. Preferably something with good support from the manufacturer - for example, Santi gives 1 free inspection and service of the suit every year. A good wetsuit is for years.

Plan: Go to SSI, find good instructor :) Do OWD, Do Nitrox, Navgiation, DrySuite/limited visiblity, Deep (in central Eu all dives are in dark, cold water :P ), Get AOWD for free (if you have 24 dives), Do Stress and Rescue (very importan one), Get Master Dive for for free :) (if you have 50 dives ), Look at others with confusion who have to pay twice for AOWD and DM.... I am just ending my Deep and starting rescue with 30 loged dives :) “May the New Year usher in greater heights and fruitful ventures. Happy New Year and Xmas !!

Regardless of your agency your training is only as good as your instructor. As with anything there are good and bad individuals. From over 50 years of dive training experience and certifications with both PADI and NAUI I found both to have very good customer service. However as a Course Director and instructor the problem is with fees for instructors. PADIs annual dues are almost twice that of NAUI. And the liability insurance has gone out of site BUT I was once told this was due to a large claim in Calif. However this $1,000,000 claim was easily offset by the over $500 million is premiiums.

It was fun to watch but it seems to me that calling these days is old fashioned ? (Especially when you compare it to making videos on YT :) ) I am not a professional in the diving industry, but this video would have been significantly better if you had set up the final data for each agency and provided it in a nice tableau. Because at the end of the day, numbers matter (handling is important). SSI has some kind of bonus/discount until the end of the year.

Why did you change from NAUI to SDI, was there a particular reason?
@TampaBayDiving19 күн бұрын
What got me interested was a friend of mine is an SDI Instructor, and she showed me their e-learning platform. When I looked at it I thought, and still do, that it is the best one out there. So I looked into it and the cost was lower than what I was paying so that got the ball rolling. Now that I've been with them for a while I can honestly say I probably won't leave at least anytime soon. As you saw on the video I got on the chat and immediately got a response with direct answers to my question. No run around or anything like that. I've also gotten to know the HQ staff and they have the friendliest and best customer service team. I can drive over to the east coast pull Brian aside and discuss anything diving that I would like. In the end I'm loyal to my wallet and good customer service. Those are the two reasons I stay. I hope that helps. Plan Your Dive and Dive Your Plan, Blake
@alexg.99419 күн бұрын
I know what you mean. The customer service is really the weak point of NAUI. Personally, I like the quality of NAUI training and their requirements for minimum hours in the water to complete the OWSD. As you well know, many dive centers and instructors do only the minimum hours as written in the S&P, and therefore deliver mediocre quality of training. However, I am sure this is not the case with you….

I've been active in the design and manufacturing of drysuits since 1993 - even owned my own drysuit manufacturing company for 20 years before retiring, so I watched your video with great interest. First, I thought it was GOOD. There is a lot of misinformation out there. I do have two things to add: Neoprene suits are better for cold water since the insulation is built in and they are more streamlined for diving in the currents often found in the higher tidal exchanges experienced in northern latitudes. Shell suits need a much heavier undergarment if diving in northern latitudes and will actually require MORE weight than a neoprene suit to compensate for the heavier underwear - and the baggy suit shape produces more drag in the currents. So, North of the Mason/Dixon line, I'd recommend neoprene suits - and South of the Mason/Dixon line, I'd recommend shell-type suits. Also, latex seals suck - they tear and rot easily. Make sure to get the silicone seals. And neoprene seals are preferred for colder water since they are WARM around your neck - not an ICE COLD ring-around-the-collar like a silicone seal gives you. Plus neoprene seals outlast latex seals by many, many years. Other than that, I thought you had a great grasp of drysuits. Carry on!

Boat was good for me because I did that before I went on my first ocean dive . It made me feel more confident and I knew what was going to happen. No disrespect but once a diver/instructor has gone over a thousand dives they lose the perspective of what it’s like being a brand new diver. It’s like asking an adult do they remember taking their first steps as a baby
@TampaBayDiving24 күн бұрын
The point in the main video is that we as instructors, can teach divers everything they need to know about diving from a boat in a briefing and with some guided dives alongside them. There is no need for a course or certification card because you will never be asked to show one to get on a boat. The agencies came up with that certification as just another way to make money. I firmly believe that if I can show a student something without making them pay their hard-earned money then they will be better off investing that into quality dive gear. I would disagree with you that instructors can't relate. There are plenty of good ones out there and to be a good instructor is being able to see the sport through your students' eyes. Thank you for tuning in! Plan Your Dive and Dive Your Plan, Blake

It’s not as simple as reading the manual you need to see what it does and most dive computers stay in surface mode until you start a dive. Hopefully you know the theory from OW/Nitrox etc. you then need to read the manual and do a couple of simple dives and have a play with the computer. Try using the compass, setting alarms for depth limits etc. Then review any sections of the manual you need to. Don’t just buy a new dive computer before a big dive and jump in.
