I agree with you on all three. I am ice diver certified but have no desire to ice dive any longer. I agree that safety should be first.

I was certified years ago when I was in my early 20's. However in my 30's it just hit different and I had no desire to ever do it again. The only cold water I'd be willing to do is the Iceland dive in between the tectonic plates. Plan Your Dive and Dive Your Plan, Blake

If I lived in Florida, I would be doing nothing but cave diving :)

I grew up in the north and got Ice Diver certified. At the time I thought it was great. The water was clearer, you could walk upside down on the ice and you could hold fish in your hands. From the cold perspective as soon as my face and lips went numb it was fine. Note, I used a neoprene dry suit which is warmer than the fabric dry suits. But, after living in the south for 40+ years my ice diving days are long behind me. I am not into the deep skin diving. But, I do understand why it appeals to some. I just want to stay down longer. Now cave diving, I don't like tight spaces. Although, I enjoy wreck diving. Bottom line at this point in my life our opinions agree.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and for your support! Cold is a no-go for me as well. Only enclosed spaces I'm found in is the wrecks but like I said every diver has their own types of diving they're passionate about. Plan Your Dive and Dive Your Plan, Blake

You sound like a brother from another mother. 72 yrs born and raised Floridian. To each their own. All disciplines deserve respect and admiration. With that said I enjoy my native warm water diving mostly in keys. Cold I’ll freely admit is not for me. I will suit up for our more open caverns on occasion. 5mm minimum. Safe diving to all.

💯 % Agree, I'm the same exact way! Be down in the Keys in early summer. Let's get some warm clear dives in! Plan Your Dive and Dive Your Plan, Blake

I went on a dive trip in Florida where the boat Captain dropped off spear fishing divers first and then went up current to drop off the group of us who were not fishing. Unbeknown to us we then became the drivers who pushed fish toward the spear guys. As soon as the sound of a spear hitting a fish happened, a couple sharks showed up. I love seeing the Sharks, but I would like a heads up about that entire program. Not being informed about the how that was going to play out didn't feel comfortable.

I can understand that point of view. Sharks can sense the vibrations that occur when a fish is speared so it naturally attracts them. They're hoping for a free meal. To prevent this we generally try to stay down for 10 minutes at a time. I've stayed down longer and had them make a pass at me trying to steal my fish. That part is no fun. Having been down the cave diving tragedy rabbit hole on youtube, there are a million things that can go wrong all of them potentially fatal. Smart to avoid that

Competitive freediving is statistically much safer than shallow spearfishing and the most dangerous part is the top 10m where most blackouts happen. Is blacking out a real thing? Absolutely. That's why you always have a buddy, to help you when you can't help yourself. For recreational freediving, you shouldn't be approaching hypoxia, but accidents do happen. Some cenotes are beautiful on breath hold, btw. They tend to be the ones which are basically straight up and down. Freediving is a lighthearted and fun athletic activity. It has more in common with competitive swimming and yoga than it does with scuba. If you don't get it, you don't get it, but both the dives themselves in the short term, and in the long term working on one's technique and develop one's self physically feels good. It's an awesome feeling to start off doing your first 25m in the pool, and then later find yourself doing 50m with no fins! Similarly depth is a lovely feeling on breath hold. It's a test of one's comfort level and relaxation in the water, among other things. Freefalling into the depths (in a cenote!) is a peaceful feeling where you just let it happen and you arrive!

I won't cave dive. I do not free dive. I use a tank, flips, mask. and I prefer never to dive lakes. I like seeing whats around me, not brown, dark brown, black.

Ditto, although there are some clear lakes that are worth diving and caverns that are amazing. Just come to Florida lol. Plan Your Dive and Dive Your Plan, Blake
