I bought my 4bt for $1100. My dad is a cummin's collector and i knew right when i saw it for sale what a deal it was. Going to tune it and put it in a beefed up dodge dakota.

Considering putting one in my ‘68 Lincoln 🤔 thinking 6BT at first but the length is a killer and I don’t want to be chopping the chassis around, the appeal of a mechanical all torque motor for cruising with about 4 times the mpg is great, especially when it’s already got a patina’d Fallout look

Great article! I can relate to this. I drove a 1974 F250 2wd for 13 years. I put an Isuzu 4BB1 in it in1979 and turbogharged it in1982 . It gave me 27 mpg and was very dependable--noisy as hell, though.

I’m confused… so you can start your diesel in negative temps and the diesel doesn’t gel?
@RustyJunkExhibition
@RustyJunkExhibition 5 ай бұрын
Yes, down to -30 F so far. I use an additive and the winter blend diesel we get in the North West can handle cold temps. The only times it will gel is if there's water in the fuel.

I have a 2008 jeep wrangler rubicon that is repowered with a 4BT. It has had the cummins since 2012. I think it is the perfect power plant for a jeep, if you like diesels. It has noticeable noise.but it isn't like you can't hear the radio. It gets great fuel mileage off-road, around 24-46 on the highway.

I have a 73 F100 and my 302 spun a bearing. It was a hot piece of mess to begin with so I decided to rebuild another 302 and swap it in. well instead of just dumping another 302 in, I had it bored, heads done, new intake, cam, etc. by the time I was done I was about 5k into the engine. yeah its better than the boat anchor that was in there but 10mpg and 65mph is about the best it gets. I could have bought a 4bt and swapped it in for less by the time all the smoke cleared.

4bt-swap sounds like a bad case of should-have-swapped-a-6bt, unless it's a real light chassis.
@RustyJunkExhibition

There's a sweet spot for sure. You'd only have 6BT envy if you're looking to use the truck for heavy duty jobs or want to go fast. 485 foot pounds of torque aint bad!

I'm considering dropping a 4BT into a series 3 land rover 109. Compariplble specs, 3/4 ton truck, 6000lbs gvw. My only two worries are cost, and also what transmission/transfer case to run. Of course being in the UK my choices are a bit different, but do you think it's still a good idea?

great video! thanks for sharing... i have a 1997 4BTA sitting on my pallet rack that im looking at dropping it in 79 short bed Chevy K10... its manual and i plan on running an NV4500 so it cruises on the highway... my only concern is the vibration factor that i hear so much about... im all into the sound and heat deadening so maybe that'll help, but what im really after is daily drivability, reliability, good mileage and good enough power to occasionally haul a car trailer long distance whenever i need to...

Excellent video thanks. Allow me to be a devil's advocate little punk... I have a business rebuilding manual transmissions and cummins engines 4bt, 6bt, 24v, CR, 6.7's etc. My personal diesel truck is a 215 p-pump dually 12 valve with nv4500 and 3.73's. Just this morning I closed off the AFC and took a 60 mile trip at 60-65 mph, 1800 ish rpm. I made 23.8 mpg measured at the same pump. (Turbo is a 60/67/12) I don't know what rear end you have but try to imagine you went alllll the way down to 2.92 gears and threw in a 6bt... A customer of mine built a single wheel 89 f250 with 3.31 rear end and taller rear tires. The effective final ratio after the tires was 2.92. He wanted a 4bt originally but we talked him into a 6bt. We built him a Nv4500 with gear vendors o/d unit, and a 350hp/950ft lbs ish 12v VE pump engine. This man is getting just about 30mpg highway at 60mph, his truck doesn't shake, the 6bt sounds better, and he has a lot more power with an engine that is a bit less stressed. He is retired and uses it to pull a small 22ft camper. He travels the country in this thing (really wish he would let us do a video on his build). Because of this, I am throughly convinced that any swap project which has room for a 6bt should go with a 6bt over a 4bt in almost any situation. That means the only benefit to a 4bt is getting it to fit into smaller vehicles. Once you realize that the 4bt weighs so much (barely less than a 6bt) you start understand how bad of an idea it is to throw a 4bt into something just because it will fit. No a bronco ii frame/suspension is not adequate to support a fully dressed drive-train that weighs over 1100-1200lbs.

7:30 Correction, they run hot but take a while to warm up on the big cast iron blocks. From what I've learned, the combustion chamber is under way more pressure and heat compared to a petrol. That's why diesel parts are so heavy duty. Great video and cool truck.

So glad I found you! Just subbed today and binge watching past videos. Your experience is ideal for me to follow. I purchased an ‘87 HJ60 (Land Cruiser), because of the diesel I-6…which subsequently took a dump. After a 6 month fruitless hunt for a new or reman head, I have decided to either put a 4bt or 2.8 into the build. Had already purchased a new H55F (5-speed manual) to mate with the old engine, so hoping to use that. Assuming that you’ve been driving the 2.8 for a bit now? I really like the idea of staying all mechanical, but, as someone with experience with both, I was hoping to get your thoughts on which engine for my application?

If you go with a one ton truck, don't go with the 4BT, go with the 6BT instead... 4BT is more sized to with the 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton chassis. Larger 3/4 ton chassis can accommodate a 6BT...

The wife cannot get into the truck so it would just be a daily driver for me I believe Cummins would be a good swap what do you think?
