I totally agree 100%. I have been learning Welsh for a year and a half. I have done an online course called "Say Something in Welsh" but it isn't a traditional language course, it is just listening and speaking and working out how to make sentences, there are no explanations of grammar or mutations, you just learn by using these things, no reading and writing apart from a vocab list. After a few months, I started using it by going to conversation groups and speaking to Welsh speakers as much as possible (I live in North Wales, so I am fortunate to live somewhere where the language is used a lot). I noticed patterns in the language that I was curious about, so I read a little bit about grammar, but not too much. I recently went on a week long residential course at intermediate level. I was expecting to be out of my depth, but I was actually more fluent than all the people who had gone down the traditional evening class route. The course was great in that it was more about using the language than teaching it, and it has encouraged me to start reading and watching Welsh television, two things that I didn't do before because I thought they were too difficult. Language courses are ok for learning the basics, but 100% you really have to go and USE a language if you want to really learn it. Great video, thank you 😊

An excellent presentation. This is certainly the way I approached French grammar, and I am now studying German in the same way. I am relieved to hear that I am in good company. An advantage of your method is that one learns enough to communicate, and one can always avoid using a given piece of complex grammar that one does not understand. In practice one can absorb the harder bits later on. My belief is that the student has first to fill their brain with as much of the language as possible by explicitly studying, and then when they have a broad base, use huge amounts of input to make that knowledge automatic i.e. implicit. With French my knowledge rocketed once I could use audio input, initially learner podcasts, then native material.

You're doing great! It's normal to have different levels of reading and listening. To improve your listening, try listening to podcasts, watching series, or finding the audiobook version of a novel you're reading. Listening while following the text along can help a lot. (Daša from LM)

How do you feel about using translation tools to create specific phrases to use in our head list? Or should learners stick to finding materials from other media sources?

I don’t know I use english for everything to work to learn to get a degree but still sometimes I do even basic grammar mistakes and even still don’t know some advanced vocabs. How can we bring to mother tongue level? Though, I also forget some words in my mother language 😢

Improving to a native level takes time. Immerse yourself in English daily, use tools like Udemy for vocabulary, and practice speaking and writing regularly. Consistency is key! 😊 (Daša from LM)

I've done something like this with German. I got Thomas Mann's Zauberberg in German from Project Gutenberg and I would copy a page in the novel and paste it into google translate to translate that page. You have the original and the translation side by side and it is quite easy to read a whole novel that way. So...yes it is a good way to go.
