Just picked this up and I didn’t even know it was the 2023 whiskey of the year! I tried it because I had another Glenglassaugh that I enjoyed. Definitely an easy sipper.

I've always said I want my scotch from Scotland and my bourbon from Kentucky (or Illinois or Maryland or Missouri, Colorado, Kansas or Georgia:). But the work of mouth regarding American single malts had grown so much over the past 5 years (since this video was made), it's hard to ignore. I'm gonna have to try Westland offerings at this point.

Was the condition that it needed to be a new whisky to win? I tasted this and no way should it be the winner. I wanted to like the new Glenglassaugh expressions, but was underwhelmed and the Portsoy is a better choice than this. Each to their own and perhaps tasting blind may have had an impact or perhaps the particular bottle I had wasn’t good, but gotta say this one feels like a purchased award to assist with the push of the newly released rebrand if I’m behind honest.

Dewar's is exceptional for the price, it's crazy my dad and I didn't know about it until this past weekend when we got the 12 grain, but it was untapped for sixteen years ever since 2007. (We bought a house that had a whole liquor and wine cellar) It's delicious when it ages and leaves an amazing flavor in your mouth you can get enough of. That perfectly nutty woody flavor stays for a few hours and you just can't get enough of it, I guess that's how it tastes when it's 28 years old because I'm trying a new one now and it's good, but that memorable aftertaste isn't there. I highly recommend you buy this and hold it because it ages better than wine. I know whiskey doesn't age after it's tapped from the barrel but this totally changed my perspective on that. It's either that or it was just better back then.

Oh man, I finally got my bottle here in Texas. This scotch is fantastic! Although I feel the smoke has been toned down a little (it was already only slightly Smokey) and the body and spiciness (not harshness) are so good…tastes more like a Speyside now like Monkey Shoulder….but aged 12 years and $7-$8 cheaper

Just out of curisoity, is there any way to know how to make cuts based on timing vs by taste if someone is using something like an electric 1 gallon air cooled still? If I was going to distill, My taste buds are not sensitive enough to taste the difference between heads, hearts and tails and need a way to go by times at least roughly. For example, "first 8 mins is heads, next 12 mins is hearts, last 15 is tails". Is there some sort of rough guess timing like this that someone with very insensitive taste buds can go by?

I’d say the next thing for you right now would be too take samples whilst trying to pull heads and burning them, about a spoonful, if it burns with an orange glow it’s methanol but if it burns with a nearly invisible blue flame it is ethanol. The only other way I’d say for timing would be to get too know your still by measuring out quantities of liquor pulled off 🤷♂️

There is no way to make these calls like that. It depends on your mash, temperatures of everything involved, your target flavour etc. Best you can do is measure the alcohol content in small batches during the run, but that says nothing about the flavour. Maybe get someone to help you taste it. The smell is the most important, if that still works. It's just not ideal if you can't taste or smell the batches. Can a blind man paint a masterpiece? Never say never, but sight helps a lot.

It's a 1 gallon still. Your not gonna get enough out to really make cuts other then four shots heads and tails.

Best rope you could buy, Kentucky hemp rope. Smoking it will screw your lungs up. Twice the carcinogens & 4 times more tare than tobacco..
