I just bought a Tokaido gi. I HATE it. I've been in karate for nearly 10 years. I started out with a cheap Drako gi. When it wore out, I took it apart and made an identical one out of canvas. Best Gi EVER. When that wore out, I got an Adidas one. Top is great, but the pants are a dreadful fit. I made another one. That one wore out, so I splurged on Tokaido. It's SO UNCOMFORTABLE. The seams are rough, so it scraped the skin off my thighs to the point of bleeding. I feel SO SLOW in that go and my kata looks tired. I'm really disappointed in this gi. I'm going to get another basic Drako for now until I have time to sew a new one from scratch again.

Should i get a 12 oz gi or a 14 oz gi.
@arahmanqazi4 жыл бұрын
14 oz not good for everyday practice unless you aim to compete in katas. Just for a good quality 10 oz

You must not sweat or have an unlimited amount of uniforms. No matter how quick I get them in the wash, I get sweat stains in the armpits. A v-neck helps.

So glad You made this video. Sensei kept saying, let's hear those gis pop! And mine is light weight, so no pop.... Lol buying a heavyweight one right now.

Apologies for commenting on a really old video but in terms of safety ... steel cage vs plastic face shield? I worry the plastic could shatter and take out your eyes.
@sanrinmartialarts6 жыл бұрын
It's a thick plastic. To shatter it you'd have to experience a level of impact beyond anything you would experience in sparring (and maybe even weapons fighting).

personally i love heavy weight gis they are so much more comfortable in my opinion then a light weight GI, I've used a Century Iron man 14oz GI top and pants for like 3 years i wanna say and it is perfect for me

I have only been able to find 11 oz in the iron man and it's a cotton poly blend which I don't like. Is yours older?

I bought a Tokaido heavy weight gi, like 5 years ago (in 2012), it's so robust and snaps well when doing kata. recently i've been doing a lot of kumite (wkf style), i start noticing that it wears off on the sleeves and arm crests as well as the pants crests..

I personally prefer to combine Gis. I like a heavyweight top with lightweight bottom. Keeps me cooler that way, and since my legs are stronger than my arms, I get a consistent snap between both pieces of the uniform.

Thanks for this video. It was very helpful. Clearly the lightweight gi is a terrible choice for women, given I can see your black T-shirt through it. Sweating in it would make it next to translucent! I always thought that the whole point of a uniform is that brands are not endorsed. The karate gi scene is very confusing that way. Do you have any advice on brands? For example, is Adidas just a higher price because of the badge, or is it a good choice? Are there any other brands and specific gis that you would recommend? Thanks.
@brianmoeller35399 жыл бұрын
crazy asscraic - Your choice of gi needs to start with how you plan on using it. I typically start with kumite, kata or all-around (daily training). There are many martial artists who compete on a regular basis and want a specialized gi to give them comfort they need to perform better. The next will be a matter of fit. Not all gi are cut the same. Some have more waist room, others longer arms or legs for certain body types. As you look into higher priced Gi, you will probably notice terms such as "European" or "Japanese" cut. Read the manufacturer's description on how they describe those differences. They generally describe if the cut will be "baggy", "slim" or "long/short" on your frame. As for Adidas. I've owned some of their kumite gi. I personally like them. They are light, breathe well and have the european cut I like (I'm 6'4" and an athletic build). They use higher quality material (IMHO) and they wear well in terms of durability. Believe me, once you jump from low price discount gi's to high quality ones, you'll feel the difference.

Hi thanks for the video, could you please tell me or make a video on the European and Japanese cut of Karate gi?
@petermcnallt12pm6 жыл бұрын
From what I know, in a nut-shell...Japanese Cut Gi: Shorter arms, shorter legs, longer jacket, European is the opposite- Longer arms, longer legs, shorter jacket...size is usually 'true to form', that being said, Tokaido may have different sizing than say, Blitz, a 5 with Blitz could be a 4 with Tokaido, Horita, Isami etc! :) best thing is to measure yourself, measure your current gi, and try to find a sizing chart when ordering- most sites/shops have this!

Where did you get that specific foam bo staff? Would you recommend any one specific manufacturer over another? Thanks!!

How stable is such a foam bo? What material is the core staff made from? (I ask since the training foam bos are much cheaper than larp fighting staffs and would be interested if these could be actually used for a fight or would break with hard strikes. - As well as most sites claim these foam bos would have "plastic" cores, what really would make them inferior to larp weapons that have fiberglass cores usually and can therefore take quite some abuse).

I too bought a Heavy Weight Gi the only con i could find with it, is it feel's like your wearing paper and it does not breath very well so it feels like your in a Oven but on the upside it look's very cool when showing forms or striking because of the o so bad ass snap it makes but for everyday practice id suggest a light weight so you wont be getting so over heated and fatigued,but then this is just my opinion ;)

@ninjauric Could you tell me where I could find one
@gjduque13 жыл бұрын
@ninjauric You should definitely think of investing in a 14 oz Gi because they are a lot more durable and last longer. Also, you can find 14 oz Gi's for much cheaper than $100. You just have too know where to look. You can find some for really good prices online that off them for even cheaper than the 12 oz price you were looking to possibly buy.
@ninjauric13 жыл бұрын
@karatedepotcom Thanks I just didnt know if I wanted to go all out with the 14ounce, but I think I will it will last longer anyways and be better. If it takes me 5-10 years to get a black belt in my style and I stick with it will be worth the money in long lasting durability so I think I will order it. Thank you for showing me diffrence in the snapping sound in this video.
@ninjauric13 жыл бұрын
Our style uses 8 oc. gi's because there cheap and are lighter and fit realy nice. I like the heavyweight because of the sound it makes when you strike but cant wear a heavier one in class at the moment I dont use my official uniform to practice in because I dont want to wear it out so I bought a cheap little $26 ones to practice in. I wanted to get a heavier one to practice in but dont know if it would worth spending the money. Should I get a 12 ounce for $80 or so or should I spend $100 fot 14?
