Apologies for commenting on a really old video but in terms of safety ... steel cage vs plastic face shield? I worry the plastic could shatter and take out your eyes.

It's a thick plastic. To shatter it you'd have to experience a level of impact beyond anything you would experience in sparring (and maybe even weapons fighting).
